Because of their reliability and highefficiency, they are utilized to replace conventionalBALL SPLINE TERMSACTIVE CIRCUITSThe closed path that the bearingballs follow through the outer raceis referred to as a circuit. Thenumber of potential circuits varieswith the diameter of the splineshaft. When a circuit is loaded withbearing balls, it is referred to as an“active circuit”. PowerTorq BallSplines may have three, six or eightactive circuits. (SEE FIG. 1)FIG. 13 CIRCUIT 6 CIRCUITRETURN GUIDESThe outer race component throughwhich the bearing balls arerecirculated is referred to as thereturn guide. PowerTorq outerraces are available with stampedreturn guides or high performancesolid return guides.BALL CIRCLE DIAMETERThe ball circle diameter is thediameter of the circle generatedby the center of the bearing ballswhen in contact with the inner andouter race.STRAIGHTNESSAlthough PowerTorq Ball Splinesare manufactured from straight,cylindrical material, internal stressesmay cause the material to bend.When ordering random lengths orcut material without end machining,straightening is recommended.Handling or machining of splinescan also cause the material tobend. Before, during and aftermachining, additional straighteningmay be required.When ordering splines with machinedends from Nook Industries, thefollowing straightness tolerancescan be expected:PowerTorq Ball Splines arestraight within .010 inch/foot whenshipped from the factory, and donot exceed .030 inch in any 6 footsection. Twist is limited to .015" perfoot at the ball circle diameter.LIFEA ball spline assembly uses rollingelements to carry a load similar toan anti-friction (ball) bearing.These elements do not wear, whenproperly lubricated, during normaluse. Therefore, ball spline life ispredictable and is determined bysplines. In a ball spline assembly, recirculatingbearing balls carry the load between the rotatingmember (inner race) and the rotating/translatingmember (outer race).calculating the fatigue failure ofthe components.Proper lubrication, regular maintenance,and operation withinspecified limits will allow PowerTorqBall Splines to operate to thepredicted life. See page 199 forlife calculations.FRICTIONThe use of rolling elements in aPowerTorq Ball Spline result in alow coefficient of friction.ROTATIONAL LASHBacklash or lash is the relativerotational movement of an outerrace with no rotation of the innerrace (or vice versa). Rotationalbacklash for the PowerTorq BallSplines is limited to a range of .005to .009" at the ball circle diameter.SELECTIVE FITWhen less than standard lash isrequired and a preloaded outerrace cannot be used, outer racescan be custom-fit to a specific innerrace with bearing balls selected tominimize rotational (angular) lash.LAND DIAMETERThe land diameter is the outsidediameter of the inner race. Thisdiameter is less than the ball circlediameter.ROOT DIAMETERThe root diameter is the diameterof the inner race measured at thebottom of the groove. (SEE FIG. 2)FIG. 2OVERTURNINGLOADTRANSFERRING OUTER RACES FROM SHIPPING ARBORSTANDARD RACESPowerTorq Ball Spline outer races are shipped on arbors. Transferring theouter race from the arbor to the ball spline can be achieved by placing thearbor against the end of the spline and carefully sliding the outer race ontothe inner race.If the I.D. of the arbor is not able to slip over the O.D. of the end journal,apply tape to the journal to bring the O.D. up to the root diameter. The outerrace can then be transferred across the taped journal onto the ball spline.CAUTION - REMOVAL OF THE ARBOR FROM THE OUTER RACE WILLRESULT IN THE LOSS OF THE BEARING BALLS.NOTE - The set screw is used for transportation only and needs to becompletely removed after installation.INCH BALL SPLINE TECHNICAL INTRODUCTIONSIDE LOADSIDE LOADA load that is applied radially to theouter race. Preloaded assembliesprovide zero backlash for excellentrepeatability and increased systemstiffness.OPTIONAL STANDARD KEYWAYSTypically, outer races are mountedby machining a keyway into theouter race, inserting a key, and thensliding the outer race into a keyedbore. Standard machined keywaysare available. See product pages201-204 for details.POWERTORQ MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONPowerTorq inner races are made of high quality 4150 alloy steel, inductionhardened to Rc 56-60. PowerTorq outer races are made of hardened steelwith ball tracks heat treated to Rc 58-60. A 90%reduction in the ball spline lifeshould be anticipated whenoperating without lubricants.Standard lubrication practicesfor antifriction bearings shouldbe followed when lubricatingball splines. A light oil or grease(lithium-based) is suitable for mostapplications. Lubricants containingsolid additives such as molydisulfideor graphite should notbe used.E-900, Nook Lubricant, is oil thathas been developed specifically forball screws and ball splines and isavailable as a spray or liquid.Lubrication intervals are determinedby the application. It is required thatspline assemblies are lubricatedoften enough to maintain a film oflubricant on the inner race.TEMPERATUREPowerTorq Ball Splines willoperate between -65°F and 300°Fwith proper lubrication.END MACHININGTo obtain optimum performanceof your ball spline assembly, it isrecommended that the machiningbe performed at the Nook Industriesfactory. Splines may be purchasedmachined to your specifications.Annealed ends can be providedon SRR splines to facilitate endmachining of journals.END FIXITYEnd fixity refers to the methodby which the ends of the splineare supported. See the BallScrew technical section for afurther explanation of end fixity,page 86-87.CRITICAL SPEEDThe speed that excites the naturalfrequency of the spline inner race isreferred to as the critical speed.Resonance at the natural frequencyof the inner race will occurregardless of orientation (vertical,horizontal, etc.).The critical speed will vary with thediameter, unsupported length, endfixity and rpm. Since critical speedcan also be affected by shaftstraightness and assemblyalignment, it is recommended themaximum speed be limited to 80%E-900 LUBRICANTPROTECTS AGAINSTINTER-BALL FRICTION,WEAR, CORROSIONAND OXIDATION.E-900 Ball Screw Lubricantmay be used on PowerTorqBall Splines. E-900 will providea lasting film for wearprotection and resistance tocorrosion. With an operatingrange of -65° to +375°F, E-900has low rolling frictioncharacteristics and helpsreduce inter-ball friction in ballspline assemblies.For optimum results, the ballspline assembly should bein good repair and free ofdirt and grease. Usedregularly, E-900 will extendthe life of ball splineassemblies. It should beapplied generously on theentire length of the spline.of the calculated valve.
