Description of technical dataCommon Mode Noise Elimination• Generally, signals emitted by sensorshave low levels and are thus susceptibleto capacitive and inductive interference,such as those generated by motors,frequency changers and other changeprocesses.This noise contents the measuring valueand frequently destroy expensive analogI/O cards in the control electronics.Through the utilisation of analog signalisolators this interferace, which usuallyaction both signal lines in commonmode (push push), is effectivelyeliminated through the zero potentialinput.• Passive isolators generate the currentrequired for the supply from themeasuring signal. The current requiredinternally is so small that transferproblems do not occur here.• The feed can be effected from either theinput or the output side. Isolation is bytransformer barrier. The advantages are:cessation of network influences, outstandingaccuracy, low signal delay andlow potential requirement. Passiveisolators are not non interacting; achange in load in the output circuit willinfluence the input circuit.Ground Loops• The voltage supply‘s secondary side isearthed for the purpose of setting up fastand secure ground loop monitoring.If an analog signal is fed in from a separatevoltage supply or if the sensingdevice itself is earthed, then transientcurrents will flow between the groundpotentials across the interconnectedground connectors, which in turncorrupts the measuring signal.Analog signal isolating amplifiers preventthis form of measuring signal corruptionand influence.the output circuit as well as the twoauxiliary voltages from each other.Depending upon the isolator design andthe observed isolation data one refershere to base isolation (galvanic isolation)or safe separation. Only one supply is required for3-port isolation. However, it is isolatedfrom the input and output circuits. Thuseven in the event of a short circuit, surgevoltage or reverse polarity, the downstreamcontrol electronics cannot bedamaged. Isolating the signals betweenthe input and output can be conductedeither optically or by transformer barrierdepending upon the transfer rate. Activeisolators are non interacting, i.e. achange in the load does not exert anyinfluence on an input circuit.2-port Isolation• The simplest form of analog signalisolator is that of 2-port isolation. Itserves to isolate the input circuit from3-port Isolation• 3-port isolation is the most universalform of signal isolator• An optical coupler or transformer isolatesthe input from the output circuit. Togetherwith the clearance and creepage distancesit serves to define the isolationlevel. For example, the input signal isconverted by means of pulse-widthmodulation into a frequency signal anddemodulated again on the output side toform an analog value. An amplifier thengenerates a standardised analog signal.A galvanic isolated DC/DC converterfeeds the input and output circuit with apotential free supply voltage. This thus simulatesthe wire resistances from the feed andreturn lines.Accurate measurements are achieved byseparately measuring the voltage drop atthe feed and return lines (4-wire circuit).The values for the supply lines arecalculated against the measured value.Temperature SignalMeasuring Method• Measurements using thermocouplesWhen conducting measurements usingthermocouples the voltage that isgenerated when two differently alloyedmetals come into contact with eachother is measured. A differential amplifieris then used to recondition the signal.The easiest (and thus the most costeffective) method of subsequent processingis conducted by means of anamplifier circuit, which converts thesesignals into standard signals.High-end components process themeasuring signal using a microprocessor,which simultaneously reconditions thesignal (filtering, linearisation).Cold Junction CompensationFor Thermocouples• Recording temperatures by usingthermocouples encounters the problemof a thermal voltage forming at theclamping terminals on the signal converteron account of the different materialsin the conductors and bus bar. Thisvoltage then counteracts the thermalelement‘s voltage.In order to compensate for the error tothe measured value which arises here,the temperature is measured at theclamping terminal. The microprocessorin the signal converter reads the valuemeasured there and calculates it againstthe measured value.This procedure is known as cold junctioncompensation.Voltage at the measuring point (Vmeas)+ Voltage at the terminal (Vterminal)= Voltage at the thermocouple (Vthermo)==> Temperature at the thermocouple (Tthermo)Linearisation• Temperature-dependent components donot normally have linear characteristiccurves. To ensure that further processingcan take place with the necessaryaccuracy, these characteristic curveshave to be linearised to some extent.The graph showing measurements ofthermocouples, in particular, reveals significantdeviations at some points fromthe "ideal graph”. As a consequence, thesignal which has been measured isworked up by a microprocessor. Themicroprocessor compares the valuemeasured with the characteristic curvefor thethermocouple in its memory andcalculates the corresponding value onthe "ideal characteristic curve”. At theoutput, it supplies the latter to an amplifier,which produces the analogue value inlinear form. The output stage convertsthis into a standardised value or into aswitching output with a switchingthreshold.The linearisation of PT100-elements canbe undertaken via simple amplifierstages. The first stage corrects the peakvalue of the graph of the measurements.The deviation at the end of the graphresulting from this is corrected by a secondstage. The under- and over-shootinggenerated in this way is very slightand is covered by the tolerance for themodule.Current Measurement Using A MeasuringTransformer• Transformer principle Each conductorthrough which current flows is surroundedby a magnetic field H, the intensity ofwhich is proportional to the current. Thefield, which is bundled in a magneticcore, generates a magnetic flux B,through which suitable sensors are usedto measure current.Converters with transformer-type couplingsare used to establish the mostcost effective measurement method forsimple sinusoidal currents. The currentto be measured flows directly throughthe measuring transformer‘s primarywinding.The secondary winding supplies themeasuring electronics with a proportionalcurrent signal. Because of power lossthis method of measuring current is limitedto smaller currents up to 5A. Theseconverters react sensitively to peakloads and therefore have to be fused onthe primary winding side.5

Twomeasurement methods arepredominantly used today to recordtemperature in the industrial field.Firstly the resistance thermometer(e.g. PT 100), which makes use of thefact that the electrical resistance of anelectrical conductor varies withtemperature, a distinction being madebetween cold and hot conductors.For an exact temperaturemeasurement the resistance valuemust be recorded, linearised andconverted to a temperatureproportionalanalogue signal. Here adistinction is made between 2-, 3-and 4- wire temperature records.The applications of these differentversions depend essentially on thedistance between the measuring pointand the place where the signals arefurther processed. Secondly, there arethermocouples. Here use is made ofthe effect that a voltage, whichincreases with temperature, isgenerated at the point of connectionbetween two different metals. Theyhave the distinct advantage overresistance thermometers that heyhave a higher upper temperature limitof up to several thousand degreesCelsius. A common area of applicationincludes furnaces, measurements incharges, plastic injection mouldingand aluminium die casting machineswith temperatures above approx.250° Celsius. Here signal separatingconverters perform an importantfunction. Firstly they separate signalsbetween the harsh industrialenvironment and the series-connectedelectronics to protect againstdestruction. They also eliminatepotential differences caused by longdistances. Secondly they convertsmall temperature recorder signals tostandard signals to minimisemeasuring errors. WAVECONTROLCurrent monitoringMonitoring flows of currents enables aconstant control of individual devicesand installation components. Discrepanciesor disruptions arising in theelectrical circuit can easily be evaluatedas breakdowns. Targeted rectifyingprocedures can be taken.The WAVECONTROL range of productsconvert sinusoidal/non-sinusoidalAC/DC currents up to 60 A to standardanalogue signals. The measurementprocesses are based on 2 basicprinciples.One principle is alternating currents upto 10 A ac and 50/60 Hz are measuredusing the transformerprocess. The module is looped directlyinto the measurement circuit. AHall-effect element comes in to operationat 10 A ac/dc.The potential-free wire is insertedthrough the module, allowing currentsup to 60 A ac/dc to be measured.Quite often, there are high-frequencyparts of signals on the wire to bemeasured. In order to be able to takethese parts of the signals into consideration,so-called TRMS converters(TRUE Root Mean Square) are connectedto the Hall sensors.
