Standing increases bone density andreduces the risk of fractures.Normal bone development needs acombination of good nutrition, weight bearing,e.g. through standing or walking, and the useof muscles. Research shows that standingimproves the bone density of the pelvis andleg bones of non-ambulatory children, suchas those with CP, Muscular Dystrophy, SpinaBifida or spinal cord injury.Standing stretches muscles, preventingthe onset of contractures.Research shows that standingprogrammes, if maintained, improve theextensibility of the hamstrings, increaserange of movement and reduce theextent of spasticity. Standing also providesproprioceptive input to young developingmuscles and joints, builds endurance tostanding and regulates resting muscle tone.Standing improves respiration andvoice control.When we stand, the diaphragm hasmore room to expand and contract,meaning that we can breathe inand out more easily, deeply andefficiently. Standingresults in improvements inblood pressure, heart rate andcirculation, and a reduction inorthostatic hypotension andoedema in the legs and feet.Standing enables kids to interacteye-to-eye with their peers.Eye-to-eye interaction improvesconfidence, self-esteem and selfimageas the child can accomplishtasks in the same manner as otherstudents or siblings.
