E/N/C/V March 14-20, 2012ROAD TRIPGet away to the 12 hours of SebringBY AUDREY BLACKWELLSTAFF WRITERIt’s time for sports car aficionados to rev uptheir engines and head to Sebring.Located in central Florida, the Sebring InternationalRaceway is preparing to host the annual12 Hours of Sebring endurance race on Saturday.Sebring is the oldest road race track in NorthAmerica. Its 12 Hours of Sebring endurance raceis part of the American Le Mans Series.All the legends have raced at Sebring — MarioAndretti, A. J. Foyt, Dan Gurney, Stirling Moss—in performance cars built by the world’s greatmanufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar,Audi, Ford, Maserati, Aston Martin and Nissan,according to information in a race brochure.At this year’s race, owner Dr. Don Panoz,developer of the nicotine patch, and his administrativecrew will celebrate the track’s 60thanniversary.Panoz Motorsports Group will honor the city’sairport, where the race track is located, for its70th anniversary. The site is an old U.S. Armyairport at Sebring Regional Airport. Panozpurchased the track in 1998, added some $6 millionin improvements and a hotel, the 122-roomChateau Elan which faces the track’s famoushairpin turn. He said it is the only race track in thecountry with such a hotel.“We’re going to combine the celebrations,” saidJesse McClelland, raceway director of operations.“There will be fly-overs, parachutes and fireworks,and a lot more people will probably show up.”About 163,000 showed up in 2011, McClellandsaid.Gates open today when people start arrivingand claiming their reserved parking spacefor their car, truck or RV. The “12-hour” is like afestival, with more than 140 food vendors andexhibitors selling food, beverages and rides.Tickets for the 12-hour race are availableonline at http://sebringraceway.com or by phoneat 800-626-7223. The Superticket is usuallypurchased as a two-day, four-day or Saturdayonlyticket. March 14-20, 2012 E/N/C/V Let’s Go! 7Sarasota County Fair opens FridayBY KIM COOLFEATURES EDITORFriday is opening day of the SarasotaCounty Agricultural Fair and all the variedevents associated with such a production.The 10-day event includes rides, entertainment,craft exhibits and demonstrations, ascience fair, horticulture displays and competitions,livestock displays and competitions plus anauction. Proceeds go to 4-H and Future Farmersof America.On opening day the gates open at 2 p.m. andclose at 11 p.m. Visitors can purchase an armbad that allows all-day admission to the mechanicalrides from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $20. LakeviewElementary School chorus will perform at 6 p.m.and at 7 p.m. there will be a cattle show in theHouser Show Arena.Saturday the fair is open from noon to 11 p.m.and Sunday hours are noon to 10 p.m. One of thekey events Saturday is the dairy goat and pygmygoat show in the Houser Arena and at 7 p.m., abeef breeding show in the same location.Sunday there will be a dog show in the FFAtent at 12:30 p.m., and a llama show at 6 p.m. inthe Houser arena and a fashion show revue onthe main stage.Both days are arm band days.
