To the membership of SEAOT:Friday, September 18 th , 2009, is the inaugural Steel Day in the U.S. Wehave over 150 events planned in nearly every state. In Texas, there are 12events planned that day.The purpose of Steel Day is to provide a networking and learning forumbetween the design community and the steel production and fabricationcommunity. You can RSVP for events on the web at www.steelday.orgSome highlights are:• Four Companies have teamed up to provide the North TexasIntegrated Steel Day Tour in the Cedar Hill/Midlothian area. This event is registered with the AIA. It will take attendees to asteel mill, a steel service center, a fabricator and a galvanizer.A very unique opportunity!• AZZ Galvanizing is having open houses in four locations• North American Galvanizing will be having open houses in twolocations. These events are great opportunities to see the hotdipgalvanizing process in person and learn about specifying it.• Central Texas Iron works in Waco, W&W Steel in Lubbock, andFord Steel in Porter are all having open house/tours.• Do you need some extra CEU’s? Our Continuing EducationDepartment will be holding a free webinar on Steel Day. Thetopic is “Design for Stability”, and it will be given by Dr. LouisGeschwindner, AISC Vice President and Professor Emeritus atPenn State University. More information will be posted aboutthis on AISC’s website in the coming weeks.I cover the Northern Half of Texas, and Rob Kinchler, out of Birmingham, covers the Southern Half. Don’t forget that as your Regional Engineer, weare your resource for project-specific design ideas. We guide projectsthrough our Steel Solutions Center in Chicago, where Conceptual Studiesare performed for buildings in the early stages of design. These are free ofcharge and are meant to be viability studies for the use of structural steel asa framing system. The conceptual design you receive will be about ten pages long and includea sample floor framing plan, a sample lateral frame elevation, and quantitytakeoffs. We can take it a step further and put a price and schedule to thisdesign as well. Our clients include developers, architects, fabricators, andengineers. They use these studies as a tool to evaluate steel framedsystems against other structural options, such as cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, masonry, and wood.
Recently, I worked with Doing Steel in Springfield, MO, on the use of the Girder-Slabsystem for the Treehouse Condos currently under construction in Branson, MO.Girder-Slab is an innovative system for fast construction and low-floor to floor heights, and this was its first Midwest application. Please utilize me as a resource to find theoptimal steel solution for your project! In Texas alone, AISC has 65 certified steel fabricators and 11 steel erectors. If youhave questions about finding a certified fabricator or about specifying AISC certifiedfabricators for your project please contact me. They can also be found on theCertification channel of our website.A quick link to all the AISC Regional Engineers is at:www.aisc.org/MyRegionHere we post upcoming travel schedules and activities within the Great Plains andIntermountain West Territories.Contact Information for Erika:Phone: 913-206-9426Email: firstname.lastname@example.orgContact Information for Rob:Phone: 205-447-4546Email: email@example.comBest regards,Erika Winters Downey, S.E., LEED AP
