Thediagram consists of an 8-bit by 8-bit summer and a number of latches or registers and onebuffer. One register contains the value of a 3 a 2 a 1 a 0 ., two other registers contain the valuezero (0), and another register contains the subtotal. The final box is simply a buffer. Thevarious signal lines a, b, c, d, e are enable the outputs of these registers (or the buffer) ontoone of the two busses that feed into the summer. Booth’s algorithm is performed byactivating the output enable signal lines a, b, c, d, e at the appropriate times dependingupon values of b 3 b 2 b 1 b 0 . The values of b 3 b 2 b 1 b 0 are fed into the state machine via ashift register. Based upon these values, a 3 a 2 a 1 a 0 is added or not to the subtotal.2
