6 REVISIONINGForewordTenā koutou katoaOver the past year, Whitireia researchers havebecome increasingly adept at navigating theresearch landscape. This 2012 Annual ResearchReport shows gains in the quantity and qualityof commissioned research, creative outputs, andacademic research across a number of fields. Inour current tertiary environment, there is alsoan increasing focus on measuring the impact orinfluence of research and this report highlights someof the diverse ways in which Whitireia research ismaking a positive contribution at the individual, community, and national levels.Peter Decker’s Retrospect provides a noteworthyexample of knowledge transfer and exchange in thecreative arts context. While retrospective exhibitionsare a mark of the esteem in which an art communityholds the work of an artist, Retrospect also pays tributeto Peter’s contribution to the next generation of artists. The research by our Pacific staff provides furtherexamples of knowledge transfer and the closing ofthe evidence-research-practice loop. The need forthe Bachelor of Nursing Pacific arose out of researchthat evidenced the experience of Pacific nurses whowere struggling with the demands of tertiary studywithin a Western cultural framework. By increasing thenumber of Pacific nursing graduates, the degree hashad a significant impact on the lives of individuals andfamilies, as well as Pacific workforce development. Itssuccess has supported the development and fundingof a number of other education, health, and socialservice research projects that have arisen in responseto community needs. The profiles in this reportshow how this research is in turn influencing policydevelopment and practice, as well as supporting ourlearning and teaching programmes. The examples above do not stand in isolation, but reflect the growing maturity of our researchculture. I wish to congratulate our researchers fortheir continued perseverance and contribution tothe Whitireia vision of “leading and illuminating ourcommunities.” I am proud of what has been achievedin 2012.Noho ora maiDon CampbellChief Executive
