Failure to do this could be a costlyomission as your driveway may subsequently need to be replaced if you come tosell your property in the future. Product Information40STEP 3: The Sub-base41How to lay block pavingThe professionals make laying block paving look easy, but with the right materials and some manual work it is notquite the major undertaking that you may of first thought. Follow this simple step by step example guide to laying anon-permeable driveway. Before you start…Draw a simple plan of your home andgarden, sketching where you would likeareas to be paved. Once your plan has beenfinalised, lay out lengths of string to markout the dimensions of your purposed patioin position. When you are happy with this, let the digging commence.Hints & TipsHave an eye on the weather.Installing block paving is extremelydifficult in the rain due to its effecton the sands and aggregates. Therefore plan ahead and, if rain islikely, protect large areas either withplastic sheets or even a gazebo.STEP 2: Edge RestraintsWhen preparing mix, please avoiddirect handling of cement, alwayscover your skin.Further to your specific requirements, apply the sub-base of MOT Type 1 withthe rake and thoroughly compact usingthe vibrating plate compactor in layers of50mm until your desired level is reached.Apply a 50mm level of slightly damp, coarse sharp sand and compact down, again using the vibrating platecompactor, to an approximate depth of35mm.A further 20mm layer of sharp sand thenneeds to be raked on top and using thescreeding rails and string line, levelled tothe correct falls. When using vibrating plate machineryplease follow all manufacturer’sguidelines including acceptable levels ofexposure and in particular use earprotectionMaterials and Tools ChecklistThe key to starting off this style ofproject is the equipment, correct toolsand materials for the job and havingthem all close to hand. Quantities ofthe following materials will varydepending on the size and sub-baserequirements of your patio.Materials•Sub-base MOT Type 1•Sharp Sand•Concrete and Mortar•Brett Kiln Dried Sand•Block PavingSTEP 1: Site PreparationDepending on the size of the area, usingthe shovel or mini excavator dig out tothe advised level. This will depend onyour existing surfaces, our CustomerServices team will be able to advise as tothe appropriate depth. If you find soft spots in the soil furtherexcavation may be required. These spotscan then be filled and consolidated withsub-base material.Remove all waste materials from the siteusing a wheelbarrow and skip. When using excavation machinery pleasefollow all manufacturers’ guidelinesincluding acceptable levels of exposureand in particular use ear protection.Hints & TipsFalls are crucial to traditional blockpaving. It should never be installed flat.Always ensure a gradient of at least1 in 60 falling towards the drainagesystem and paving height that'salways 150mm below the house dampproof course.Using the cement mixer, mix 1 partcement and 6 parts ballast to create aconcrete foundation for the edgerestraint that is 100mm thick. Ensurethat the edge restraint unit that is tobe placed on the foundation will sit atthe required finished level using thestring line and spirit level. The edge restraint can either be a kerbunit of a thick paving block (at least60mm). Mortar these units into thefoundation using the trowel and rubbermallet and again using the concrete, form a haunch up at least half the blockheight.STEP 4 : InstallationRemember when lifting and carryingpaving units, always consider theweight before attempting to lift. If it isheavy, take care not to trap yourfingers whilst handling the paving units.Ideally starting from a right angle orstraight edge, place your blocks on topof the laying course, ensuring that theysit 5mm proud of the finished level.Following your desired laying patternensure that you pick blocks from threeor more different packs at any onetime in order to minimise the risk ofcolour patching.STEP 5 : FinishingUsing the yard broom, brush the kilndried sand into all of the joints andthoroughly compact, again using thevibrating plate compactor, ensuringthat all of the blocks are at the desiredfinished level.Subsequently top the sand andre-compact to ensure that no joints areleft unfilled.Tools•Trowel•Pointing Tool•String Line•Rubber Mallet•Screeding Rail•Spirit Level•Shovel•Skip•Wheelbarrow•Tape Measure•Yard Broom•Vibrating Plate Compactor•Block Splitter or Diamond Disc Cutter•Mini Excavator (Optional)•Cement Mixer (Optional)Please use Personal ProtectiveEquipment when carrying out thiswork, such as safety shoes and gloves.Gloves, Safety Goggles, Dust Mask,Ear Defenders, Knee PadsOnce all of the blocks are laid intoposition you will need to cut a numberto complete the area. Cutting blocks isbest done using a block splitter ordiamond disc cutter. Whereverpossible, always obtain watersuppression cutting equipment. Please note, if you are using the BrettAura or Classico range of paving blocksthe Brett Permeable Chippings need tobe applied in this finishing process.www.buildbase.co.ukWhen using cutting equipment pleasefollow all manufacturer’s guidelinesincluding acceptable levels of exposureand in particular use eye protection.Hints & TipsAlways keep a bag of kiln dried sand around afteryou've finished your job, as sand will come out ofthe joints in the initial life of the area. Regularly topup until it settles in the joints.

Only products of50mm or more are suitable for drivewayinstallation.CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONCRETE PRODUCTSEfflorescence: Efflorescence is a temporarysalt residue that can occur on all concreteproducts in their initial life. The salt masks thecolour of the product and is often mistaken forfading. The best course of action is to leave thepaved area to weather over time andefflorescence will usually disappear.Differential Curing: Dark patches occasionallyappear on the surface of garden products. Thisis known as Differential Curing and is caused byvarying moisture levels within the flag drying atdifferent rates. Like efflorescence, given timeand the natural weathering process suchpatches will tone down and become less visible.Porosity: Concrete continues to cure for manyyears after manufacture. Whilst this happens, and usually only during its initial life, a level ofporosity may exist where some product retainswater giving a damp appearance. This willdisappear as the concrete continues to hardenand the product dries out.Aggregate contaminants: Very rarely concretemay be affected with Iron Pyrites and/orLignite. These are both the result of naturallyoccurring constituents within the product rawmaterials which may result in localiseddiscolouration of the surface of an individualunit. This phenomenon willnot normally affect the performanceof the product.Sealants: Sealers can help protect and enhanceyour investment. Before you choose to buyone, make sure you are aware of the following.Sealers may trap potential efflorescence andother forms of discolouration that can occurfrom time to time, making them almostimpossible to remove. We recommend you wait12-18 months before sealing. This will allowany potential discolouration to be exposed andenable you to remove it. Before sealing, makesure that the paving is thoroughly cleaned andany joints are filled. Prior to applying to thewhole installation, test in a small inconspicuousarea.Surface marking: Some products within therange are deliberately distressed via a tumblingprocess in order to give them their agedaesthetic. Tumbling can leave a dust on thesurface of the product that should significantlyreduce with the natural ageing process. The instances mentioned above are notcovered under any product guarantee providedby Brett. For more information on any of thetopics above, please contact our CustomerServices on 0845 60 80 570.The colours in concrete paving come frompigmentation placed into the product duringproduction. Products may have 2 or 3 differentpigments added to create the subtle and veryattractive colour tones. Overall these variationsare more uniform.Tumbling: Products that are tumbled, such asAlpha and Aura, have been distressed withvarying production techniques. The distressingprocess by its very nature creates a randomaesthetic. This variation is deliberate and givesthe appeal of the product range.ORDERINGTo order Brett product contact your nearestBrett stockist, call 0845 60 80 570 or visitbrett.co.uk/findastockistIf samples have been acquired from a Brettstockist, we strongly recommend orderingfrom the same stockist. All dimensions quoted in Brett literature arenominal and are for guidance only. Whereproducts fall outside the scope of suchstandards, Brett best practice installationtechniques are recommended. For any querieson installation methods please call ourCustomer Services on 0845 60 80 570.Each manufacturing production run of aspecific product (or batch) will have its ownunique characteristics. Minimising the numberof batches will help reduce product variation.Products should be laid from a number of packsat the same time. In the case of paving threepacks should be mixed for single colours, five inthe case of multi-coloured product. Ideally, product should also be mixed by being takenfrom vertical stacks rather than in layers of thesame pack.Any garden products supplied may incur jointwidths of differing sizes depending on thepattern they are installed in.We recommend they are dry laid to check theproduct fits the required area before they areactually bedded. This is also important forcircles, octagons and corner kits.AFTERCAREAll pavements should be subjected to a regularmaintenance regime.
