and thin, the die-hards, they are whomake the game special.”There are five clubs that have nottasted premiership success thismillennium, two won in the 1990sand two in the 1980s, which leavesone club, South Adelaide, which hasendured almost 50 years ofheartache since its most recent flagin 1964.“I was almost seven-years-oldwhen my dad took me to AdelaideOval for my first game, which wasthe ’64 Grand Final,” Panthersupporter Doug Robertson said.“We came down from Woomera, where dad had met Neil Kerley, whowas driving a truck, and I vividlyremember sitting on dad’s shouldersand it was so packed, people wereasking me what was happening onthe field.“I’ve been a South supporter eversince.“And the best players? DavidKantilla was a gem, I’d never seensomeone like him, and Peter Darleyis the most outstanding player I haveever seen.“As for the modern SANFL, it’s stillclub footy, with all the banter, andthe contests, man on man – I love it.”Marcia Parker came to Adelaidewhen her brother started playing forNorth Adelaide, and even after heswitched to Woodville, remainedloyal to the Roosters and is still a bigsupporter of the team from Prospect.“I cannot go past the 1987premiership,” she said. “To lose twoto Glenelg and then come back towin, it was sweet revenge, and mademe forget the other two Grand Finals.“We had some great players backthen with the Jarman boys, firstAndrew then Darren, and their skills. And Kym Klomp was hard, whileMick Redden, just for all the travelhe did to play, is a legend.“The best thing about watchingfootball today is seeing all the youngplayers develop. It’s still oldfashioned footy, not as clinical as theAFL. You can stand up and supportyour team and have some banterwith the crowd.”The Eagles have only been aroundfor 22 years but have a rich historythrough West Torrens and Woodville, which merged in 1991.In just the Eagles third season theytasted premiership success, andhave won two more flags since, which is helping to lay thefoundation of the club’s future.“Dad was a Torrens supporterbut for me I’ve only ever reallyknown the Eagles, and the threeflags are definitely the highlight,”Kyle Smith said.“As a stats man I was pleased wewere the second team to lose aQualifying Final and win thepremiership. What amazes me isthat more teams had actually wonthe flag from the elimination finalbefore 2011.“The best thing about the SANFLfor me is the different venues, and itis affordable. The players aren’trobotic like the AFL.”Although spoilt with ninepremierships this millennium,Central District supporter RobertMaguire said the 1995 Grand Final(the club’s first) was his highlight.“It was the biggest game up to thatpoint and is a treasured memory,” hesaid.“Of course the first flag wasspecial, but just to be on the biggeststage for the first time had animpact.“As for players, John Platten wasbrilliant the way he could weavearound and take big marks, while Iadmired John Duckworth’sdetermination. And AnthonyIngerson in full flight was someone Iloved to watch.“While I’m not a big fan of many ofthe new rules, I like the speed ofthe game today, and just the loveof the game and watching mybeloved Bulldogs keeps me comingevery week.”5Your local LenderPh: 8410 8777www.homeloansplus.com.au

TheThere are certain things in thisworld that really chafe myfeather. I know my weekly column isusually fun, light-hearted andincredibly witty (cue the crickets),but this week something has throwna swarm of bees into my bonnet andgot me downright disappointed. There are certain things I see popup on the news that really pierce mysoul to its very core. But one thingthat really gets to me is news aboutracism. It amazes me that racism isso alive in today’s society.I know you’ve all read about itover the last week with the incidentinvolving Sydney Swan AdamGoodes and a 13-year-old girl. We’ve all witnessed it before, andwe know the stories from the pastsuch as Nicky Winmar’s famousmoment.Firstly, let me say that what I findperhaps the most disappointingthing from this story is the abusehurled at the 13-year-old after theevent from supporters of bothteams. Yes, she shouldn’t have saidwhat she did, it was offensive andGoodes was right to stand up forhimself and the way he handledhimself on and off the field in thehours following was honourable andinspirational. But for supporters toreact the way they did is deplorable.I’ve spoken to you before aboutcrowd behaviour, crude languageand abuse both to other supportersand to players. In reality, did theyoung girl really know that what shewas saying was racist? Probablynot. Like Goodes said, she’s not toblame; she was merely mimickingthose around her. She should knowbetter than to call people names, it’sone of the fundamentals of bullying“sticks and stones”. There is nodoubt that what she said was wrongand she should have been called upon it. But she should have beenPhantomthe ghost that talksRacism has no placetaken aside, explained why it waswrong, made to apologise just likeshe did and the story ends there –lesson learnt. What’s also concerning about thisevent are the stories that havecome out in the aftermath. Theother tales of racism and abusecoped by players and spectators.Look how far we have come –some of our greatest footballers areIndigenous and some of ourbiggest names in football comefrom other cultural backgrounds. We have amazing AFL players inSudanese Majak Daw, BrazilianHarry O’Brien, Fijian Alipate Carlileor Nigerian Joel Wilkinson. OrSANFL players such as AseriRaikiwasa and Emmanuel Irra; allbig names and heroes of today’syounger footy fans. We prideourselves on being a multi-culturalcountry, accepting other religions, cultures and races. Generation-X,Generation-Y and now Generation-Zs have grown up in this amazingcountry, where race or skin colourhas very little to do with who wemake friends with or the people weadmire. In fact, we are moreculturally aware today than everbefore, and the newer generationsembrace this – mostly. So I can’thelp but feel shocked when a13-year-old yells out a name at oneof our AFL greats. The fact oldergenerations are passing this on,and younger generations arepicking up words and racial slursthat most people their age havenever heard of, is the very thingthat will ruin our national’s socialacceptance.Compared to our past, racism onthe field is minimal and we rarelyhear of any overly offensive banterbetween players based on race. Butin the outfield, the story is verydifferent. It’s great the AFL and6SANFL have both come out andexpressed their ‘no-tolerance’approach to racism – it should betreated in the same way as abuse, fights and obnoxious behaviour, and this is exactly what theLeagues are doing. The SANFL released a mediarelease last week outlining itsstance on racism – it was titled‘SANFL CONDEMNS RACISIM’. Inthe release, SANFL GeneralManager Football Chris Davies said:‘‘The SANFL is uncompromising inits efforts to ensure every player, official and supporter who attendsa football game is not targetedbecause of their race, gender orbackground.‘’We pride ourselves on ourIndigenous programs as they arewidely recognised as leading theway in providing male and femaleAboriginal youth with pathways inemployment, education andmentoring.“The SANFL takes itsresponsibilities in this regard veryseriously and we will continue tohelp lead the way in stamping outthis type of abhorrent behaviour.’’I commend Goodes, the AFL andthe SANFL on their response to thissituation. There is no room forracism in our wonderful sport –these comments and out-datedbeliefs will not change the Leagues’stance on the issue, it will not alterthe players that get selected atLeague level or the champions ofour game. And I commend the13-year-old girl for her apologyletter and phone call to Goodes andCollingwood. So, I urge all supporters, playersand officials to stand up to thisissue within our sport – if you hearor see anything that is offensive toanother player or spectator, reportit. Don’t tolerate it. We all need towork together to help the SANFLand AFL eliminate crass behaviourin our sport. Please email or tweet yourthoughts with your name andsuburb through to The Phantom’sCave.Email: phantom@boylen.com.au.@SANFLBudget#sanflphantom

MACCA BUCKING8THE TREND by ZAC MILBANKCentral District coach Roy Lairdhas dubbed them “millionaires.”They are the fringe players notprepared to “do the apprenticeship’’ atSANFL level, preferring to earn moremoney playing for less commitment inthe country. It would have been easy forGlenelg’s Ryan McInerney to continueon this path, having left the PortMagpies for south-east clubLucindale at the end of 2010.And while the disciplined defendersays he chiefly left Alberton due tothe ‘’burn out’’ factor, he admits thelure of the dollar remains a factor.“My reasons were probably a littlebit different for leaving (the SANFL),’’McInerney said.“Obviously I got looked after(financially) travelling down (to thesouth-east each week) but I neverwent on a mission to chase money. Iwas just a bit burnt out mentally.’’Now McInerney is bucking thetrend by having another crack at theSANFL with the Tigers, having spenttwo seasons playing in the KowreeNaracoorte Tatiara Football League.“When I left the SANFL I had workpressures and wanted to play morefor the enjoyment,’’ said McInerney, who played 27 League matches forthe Magpies in 2009-10.“Playing at Lucindale with mates, Igot the enjoyment back and with thatcame the desire to get the best out ofyourself again.“Once that drive comes back yourealise you are only going to beyoung once and you are only going tohave your footy career once so it’sabout the sort of legacy you want toleave.“It could be too late in life to alwayswonder what could have been so Ithought there was never a better timethan now to come back to it (SANFL).’’At 24, McInerney is in a much betterposition off the field to make hissecond-coming a success.A law clerk for the AttorneyGeneral’s Department, the boy fromWest Whyalla said his state of mind isbeing looked after at Tigerland.“At Glenelg our well-being ismonitored closely,’’ McInerney said.“When we walk in the door, as asign-in, we have a sheet where we areasked how we are feeling while alsorating the level of each trainingsession on a scale of 1 to 20.“The coaches monitor it so that ifyou are constantly rocking up totraining and putting down a two orthree, there is a follow-up process.“That makes a big difference toknow they are on the lookout for it bykeeping in touch with how everyoneis feeling.’’Arguably Glenelg’s best recruit thisyear, McInerney has quicklyestablished himself as one of theBays’ most reliable players. Not only is the left-footer a neat kick,he’s more than willing to do the ‘onepercenters’for the betterment of histeam.Ryan McInerney.“I was really lucky to be given thisopportunity,’’ a humble McInerneysaid.“It’s been good to play my role forthe team and keep my spot.’’Now all McInerney craves is to playalongside close friend Tim Walsh, who is recovering from a fracturedfoot.Key forward Walsh and McInerneyplayed in junior premierships with theMagpies together while also sharingthe ultimate success at Lucindale in2011.“Tim is one of my best mates,’’McInerney said.“He’s been unlucky with injury butI’m really looking forward to himgetting back out on the park. As wellas getting on well off the field, I thinkwe bring out the best in each otheron the field.’’House & LandPackagesNOW SELLING inENCOUNTER BAYEnquireToday!ABN 64 007 789 013 BLD G8890 RLA 214662DisplayLocaosfor display ope mes visit:08 8132 4500 | oakfordhomes.com.au
