PROGRAM AND BUSINESS DOCKETIDENTITY INITIATIVE:WHO DO WE SAY THAT WE ARE?We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part ofthe one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.Disciples increasingly want to know about the distinctive gifts of this community offaith in order to be faithful and effective witnesses to Jesus Christ.INFORMATIONA church’s identity must be firmly rooted in scripture and yet flexible enough to adaptto changes in culture and the shifting demands of mission. Today, we are wrestling withwhat it means to be Disciples of Christ in a world that is increasingly pluralistic, globallyconnected, and yet so often violently divided. The Council on Christian Unity (CCU) and Communication Ministries (CM) have teamedup to launch an “Identity Initiative” to help Disciples understand and claim who we areas a distinctive community within the whole Church of Jesus Christ in our world today. The CCU is producing a series of brief videos and discussion guides based on thethemes of “movement, wholeness, welcome, and table.”. CM is working to put togetherpractical suggestions and materials for sharing what is unique about the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ), supporting congregations in their local efforts. The videos and othermaterials will be debuted at the Orlando General Assembly. For information on the structure of the denomination, look under the “Who We Are”tab on www.Disciples.org. There you will find that each expression of the church –congregations, regions, and general ministries – is self-governing and makes decisionsthat are only binding on that expression, whether it be a congregation deciding who tocall for pastoral leadership or a region deciding where to place its mission emphasis.LORD TEACH US TO PRAY 11
