RecruitmentThe selection of MedVent Unit participants is dependenton confirmation of minimum requirements being met.Successful candidates will:TrainingTraining for the unit is provided by the Ottawa ParamedicService Community Medicine and Trainingand Development sections. Advanced training isalso provided by other outside agencies as applicable.In addition, members will have the opportunityto complete a variety of other training and certifications.The unit currently operates at three progressivelevels of training:▪ Possess current certification in Standard First Aid andCPR ‘C’.▪ Complete a pre-screening questionnaire and aninterview with the Executive and Advisors.▪ Be able to dedicate sufficient time to training andevents, including completion of a three-month probationperiod.▪ Be able to complete a clear Police Records Check.▪ Experience or other formal training may substitute forstipulated entrance requirements.▪ Basic▪ First Responder▪ Emergency Medical ResponderThe unit meets twice a month for event updatesand ongoing training. What is MedVent?Since its inception in the Spring of 2002, the Medical Venturer (MedVent) program has focused on youth aged 15to 18 who are interested in exploring career opportunities related to health and paramedicine. A formal partnershipbetween Scouts Canada and the Ottawa Paramedic Service allows MedVent to provide a dynamic, handsonfirst aid service.The program is built upon traditional Scouts Canada principles (leadership, citizenship, community service,personal development and growth), the development of knowledge of the operations of an emergency medicalsystem as well as the practical skills that paramedics and first responders utilize in their daily work.Members of MedVent work as a voluntary first aid provisions team at a variety of public and Scouting eventsthroughout the year. Through ongoing training, development and community involvement, members gain valuableexperience in decision making, communication and working co-operatively with team members.Public EventsMedVent participates at many local events withinthe community, usually attended alongside theOttawa Paramedic Service. These events includeCanada Day, Winterlude, and other seasonalfestivals in the Capital.Our Mandate1. To provide a co-ed vocational program forOttawa area youth that exposes them to thecareer opportunities in the emergency medicalindustry.2. To accomplish the above with hands onlearning through the creation of a first aidprovisions team. This team will work hand inhand with the Ottawa Paramedic Service atevents in which both Scouts Canada and theOttawa Paramedic Service participate.Scouting EventsOur partnership with Scouts Canada gives us theopportunity to participate in scouting events aroundthe area. These events can be anywhere from dayoutings to weekend camps to large-scale eventslike the Canadian National Jamboree.
