AN EVENING OF EXCEPTIONAL WINESPhoto courtesy of Domaine Clarence DillonCLARET from a Private Cellar21 EUChâteau La Mission Haut-Brion vintage 1959MagnumPessac LéognanRecently relabelled by special arrangement by LaMission Haut-Brion in 2012. Level low neck.Magnum with original cork and capsules slightlycorroded.100/100 points Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 95October 1994Lying in a private cellar in London, England1 MagnumTasting Note: “ ‘The Vintage of the Century’ foretold andbaptized before the harvest. After a few hesitations thewines have proved magnificent just about everywhere.Very hot during the harvest. Very concentrated wines.A wine very much like those of this vintage, very big, matured colour. The heat during the summer madeharmonious, sweet wines leaving plenty of multipleflavours on the palate. At the very end of the tasting, itstarts showing its age. This wine has reached its zenith.Drinkable now.”Domaine Clarence Dillon“It is interesting to note that many 1959s, much like the1982s, were maligned for lacking both acidity and agingpotential. How does one explain the fact that many 1959sare less evolved, as well as richer, fresher, and morecomplete than many 1961s For example, as great as the1961 La Mission is, the 1959 is a richer, deeper-coloured,more concentrated and powerful wine. It needs at least 3-5 more years of cellaring to reach its plateau of maturity.Spicy and super-concentrated, with a dense, plummypurple colour, this young, broodingly backward,formidably-endowed wine should be at its best before theend of the century and drink well for the first 20-25 yearsof the next millennium. Tasted 11 Times with consistentnotes.”HK$60,000-70,000WWW.SPINK.COM
