TPRIDevelopment of Supercritical Coal-fired UnitsSupercritical and ultra-supercritical units havebeen developed into proven mature andcommercialized advanced technologies in theworld• Over 600 supercritical coal-fired units have beensuccessfully into commercial operation fordecades worldwide.• About 60 ultra-supercritical units in operationworldwide• The 1000MW class ultra-supercritical units withsteam parameters of 31MPa/600 ℃/600 ℃ will bedeveloped in industrial economies.


TPRIAdvantages of Supercritical units• Supercritical units have higher plant efficiency than that of subcriticalunits because of higher steam parameters.• The overall plant efficiency is around 41% for supercritical unitswith steam parameters of 24.1MPa/538℃ /538 ℃, which is isabout 2%-3% higher than that(38%) of sub-critical unit withsteam parameters of 16.7MPa/538/538℃• The overall plant efficiency is around 45% for ultra-supercriticalunits with steam parameters of 31MPa/566 ℃/566 ℃,which isabout 4% higher than that of the above supercritical units• The advanced supercritical units has reached an overall plantefficiency of 47% to 49% in the world.• Develop large size coal-fired supercritical units with high steamparameters will be the most effective technical solutions forChina to optimize its electric power structure. This will greatlyimprove coal utilization efficiency and reduce pollutantemissions in the near future.


TPRICurrent Application of SupercriticalCoal-fired Units in China• Over 20 imported supercritical units with a totalcapacity of 6000MW have been put into operation• The first two 600MW supercritical units supplied byABB-CE were put into operation at ShanghaiShidoukou No.2 Power Plant in the early 1990s. Thenet coal consumption rate was 312g/kWh• Almost all supercritical units currently under operationin China are imported ones.• The Chinese technical personnel and operators havegot a better understanding to the operationtechnology and design characteristics for thesesupercritical units.


TPRITechnical considerations for supercriticalcoal-fired units domestically manufactured• Since 1990s, the advanced supercritical units each ratedat 600MW worldwide have employed increasing steamparameters from 24.2MPa/538/566 to 24.2MPa/566-580/566-580 and is currently approaching to24.2MPa/600/600.• The supercritical units currently under operation in Chinaemploy steam parameters of 24.2MPa/538/538.• It is suggested that the supercritical units to be built inChina be based on 600MW capacity and employ steamparameters of 24.2MPa/566/566,which is the proventechnology in industrial countries.• Around 100 supercritical coal-fired units have beenordered and will be manufactured in the next few years

TPRIConcluding Remarks• China’s electric power generation will continue to be dominatedby coal-fired power generation within the next 30 to 50 years.• Development and application of clean, high efficiency, largecapacity,coal-fired power generation technology is a long-termstrategic task for China• In order to meet the increasing demand for China’s electricpower development as well as to improve coal utilizationefficiency and reduce pollutant emissions from coal-fired powerplants, China has take effective measures to optimize thethermal power structure through combination of technology andequipment import to greatly develop domestic supercritical unitsas well CFB boilers.


Mr. Zhao Zongrang is currently the director of the programmemanagement division of Thermal Power Research Institute (shortlyfor TPRI) in PR China.Mr. Zhao received his Bachelor’s degree majored in utility boilerfrom Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1984 and obtained his Master’sdegree majored in thermal power engineering from TPRI in 1987.He has been worked at TPRI since 1987 and conductedexperimental studies and field tests on utility boilers for over 10 years. In recent yearshe has been actively involved in the research programs management at TPRI,especially in the filed of clean coal combustion technologies.TPRI is a research organization and has been devoted to R&D activities of thermalpower generation technologies and related equipment since 1965. TPRI has played aleading role in providing technical consultation services for thermal power plants andis capable of providing technical solutions to improve fossil-fuel utilization efficiencyfor power generation and to reduce pollutant emissions from thermal power plants forenvironmental protection. Based on over 30 years of filed experience and extensiveexpertise, TPRI has became as a technology center for promoting technologydissemination and improving the overall efficiency, reliability and availability forfossil-fired power plants.
