A young craftsman by the name of Raymond E. DeWalt had an idea and a gift of innovation. DeWalt followed in his father’s footsteps by holding construction and mill jobs following high school. To help cut high labor costs, DeWalt would occasionally rig machines to meet the special needs of certain jobs. Mr. DeWalt was eventually offered the role as head of a woodworking mill that manufactured everything from boxes to houses. More work was expected from the mill than could be afforded, so DeWalt designed a yoke and attached it to a motor and saw, then mounted it on a standard arm. The saw could be raised, lowered, slid back and forth, moved to any angle, or tilted to any bevel. This invention did the work of four men and greatly cut DeWalt’s labor costs and became the first radial arm machine. The DeWalt Products Company was formed in 1924 with a plant and offices located in Leola, Pennsylvania. The electric woodworking machine known as the DeWalt “WonderWorker” was the first product to be offered for sale. After years of great expansion, DeWalt introduced metal cutting machines that had the ability to cut through both ferrous (contains iron) and non-‐ferrous metals. In 1992, DeWalt introduced its first product line designed specifically for residential contractors, remodelers and professional woodworkers consisting of portable electric power tools and accessories. By the mid 90s, DeWalt released an exciting system of over 30 new cordless tools, including the most Superior Service | Quality Products | Reliability | Operational Excellence | Value-Added Expertise | Customization | Experience
