Movie fans will
recall the 1981
Bill Murray
comedy classic "Stripes,"
which featured the hilarious
(albeit imagined) EM-50 Urban
Assault Vehicle.
With the unit disguised to
look like an ordinary motor
home, the characters in the film
rampaged across the Czecho-
slovak Socialist Republic's
border, then sport the vehide's
"hidden amenities," including
a cannon, machine guns,
flame throwers, missiles, and
all manner of infantry weapons.
The EM-50 also featured
hideaway armor plating which
would cover the windows and
other vulnerable points when
going into combat and sported
a fully-equipped communications
and navigation suite.
Such vehicles are meant
only for the movies, of course
— until now.
On Tuesday, May 12 at the
Portsmouth Police Department,
state, county and local
officials unveiled to the public
a high-tech, state-of-the-art,
urban assault vehicle of their
own.
From the exterior, it resembles
an oversized motor home
just like the EM-50 did. But
instead of cannons and flamethrowers,
this vehide is armed
with a breathalyzer — and
much more - in a battle to
HHS receives preservation award for Leavitt Barn
Br LIZ PREMO
ATLANTIC NEWS STAFF WRITER
HAtvIFTON I The Hampton
Historical Society's c.1796
Leavitt House Barn is one of
13 projects (and one of two
barns) in the state of New
Hampshire to be recognized
by the NH Preservation Alliance,
for outstanding achievement
in preservation.
The honor was announced
on Tuesday of this week in
Concord. The awards are
presented annually; this year
marks the Alliance's 20th
year celebrating preservation
achievement in New Hampshire.
The call for this year's
nominations was issued in
February.
"We welcome this opportunity
to recognize outstanding
projects and people, offer
thanks and inspire others,"
said Preservation Alliance
board member and Awards
Committee Chair, Paula
Cabot. 'The 2009 award-winning
projects, while varied,
share common themes: Tenacious
leaders, strong public
support and creative problem
solving."
HHS took on the Leavitt
House Barn project back in
2004, when it was located on
Drakeside Road and in danger
of being demolished. Thanks
saved from demolition, dismantled,
and relocated to the
grounds of the Tuck Museum
complex on Park Avenue.
Over the next several
years, with assistance from a
generous community and a
crew of volunteers and barn
experts, HI-IS was able to lay
a concrete foundation in preparation
for the barn's eventual
reconstruction. Vigorous
fundraising and donations
helped to fund the project,
and an official barriraising
took place in 2007.
HES celebrated the project
at a community grand opening
in 2008; the structure now
houses an impressive exhibit
of farm-related artifacts and
other related implements
from the museum's collection.
This example of adaptive reuse
lives up to its purpose
with the programs and exhibits
offered by FIRS at the Tuck
The hard work and dedication
that went into the Leavitt
House Barn project did not
go unnoticed by NH Preservation
Alliance officials, who
observed that "every year we
In addition to the two
include two bridges, two
railroad stations, a town hall,
a schoolhouse, a canal gatehouse,
a Civil War memorial,
a Seacoast warehouse and
two gardens.
According to NH Preservation
Alliance Executive
Director, Jennifer Goodman,
the awards "recognize individuals,
organizations and
corporations for work or
projects in the categories of
restoration and stewardship,
projects "that anchor stories
and attraction as a tetreat for
visitors."
Besides the Hampton
Historical Society's Leavitt
House Barn (recognized for
"outstanding advocacy and
preservation") and the Gilmanton
Year Round Library
Association's 1790s barn (outstanding
Portsmouth and New
COMMUNITY
Citizen's Police Academy graduates 30
ing experience for all those
involved.
"The program was Mach
3 from the start! We were supposed
to end at 9:30 p.m. but
that was rarely the case and
we liked it that way. Aside
from a quick bathroom break,
we were on the go every minute,"
says graduating class
member Lori Smith. "You just
can't miss watching a K9 officer
launch his dog at a 'bad
guy' wearing a protective
sleeve, then, when released,
give that 'bad guy' a lick.
What an awesome tool!"
Smith, who works for
WOKQ radio, heard about
the Citizen's Police Academy
through an on-air public service
announcement.
"It sounded like a once-ina-lifetime
chance," she says.
Indeed, the class was treated
to a variety of delights
few in the public ever have a
chance to experience.
During the eight-week
course, the students toured
five police departments, the
Coast Guard station, and the
Rockingham County Jail,
while mingling with three
chiefs of police, a jail superintendent,
and two judges.
"I've lost count of the number
of sergeants, lieutenants
and patrolmen," Smith says,
adding that the class also met
a K9, a resource officer, several
detectives and col iectional
officers along the way.
"We witnessed a shooting
range demo, climbed aboard
a police cruiser, a Convincer,
a Coast Guard rescue boat,
a lighthouse, a Coast Guard
communications tower, and a
BearCat," Smith says.
A BearCat is a bulletproof
tactical armored vehicle, commonly
used by SWAT Teams,
while a Convincer is a lowimpact
simulator that allows
the rider to experience what
Smith says.
Students were able to tag
along in cruisers, to see the
typical day-to-day experience
that local law enforcement
officers have.
Aside from work, Smith
reveals that one of the most
important things she learned
was — contrary to the public's
general perception — how
"human" law enforcement
officials are.
"The police officers are just
- like us. They are our family,
neighbors, friends, etc. They
have kids. Go to work. Mow
their lawns. Pay their taxes.
The only difference is that WE
have given them certain powers
over the community to
enforce our laws," she says.
"It is my greatest wish
that our legislators, senators,
all representatives and all
kids could attend this class,"
Smith says of the Citizens'
Police Academy. "I cannot
thank Seacoast Crimestoppers
enough for the grant so
we could do this ... and to
Captain David 'Lou' Ferland
and Detective Tom Grella for
- —creating this program. Detective
Grella was so patient
and kind as he escorted us
through all eight weeks. They
really, really worked hard for
us," Smith says.
According to Det. Grella,
the Citizens' Police Academy
will likely become an annual
event, and others may have
the thrill of the experience
next spring, in 2010.
After graduating, Smith
had one "final message"
about what she and her fellow
citizens had learned.
"We are all guardians of
our democracy. Sure, we pay
these people to serve us in
the cold, the heat, nighttimes,
holidays, weekends, mandatory
overtime, listen to 'us'
yell at them, try to hurt them,
throw up on them, etc.," she
says. "But it is really up to us
to help."

That's how owner Dr.
John Hopkins explains the
concept behind Bellamy
Fields in Dover, a premier
assisted living center which
has welcomed rave reviews,
high praise, and enormous
success in its first three years
— so much so that it was
already time to expand with
a second facility in town.
Situated above rolling
fields, Bellamy Fields could
well be on one of the most
picturesque pieces of landscape
in the Greater Seacoast
region.
Here, more than 50 residents
spend tranquil yet
active days with a prestigious
staff of caregivers
. that is writing the book on
, superb service for folks living
in their elder years.
"Residents living here
now age from 63 to 109,"
says Administrator Wendy
Switzer, as she leads the way
through the bright, sunlit
halls that surround an encircled
outdoor courtyard that
the building encompasses.
She passes by the beauty
shop, the elegant dining
room with a. "homey" feel,
and wide open hallways
with large glass panels that
allow residents to enjoy
to the utmost the outdoor
scenery.
But life at Bellamy Fields
is more than plenty of rest
and relaxation for the folks
who call it home. There is
always plenty to do on the
busy calendar of events.
"We have physical activities
and mental activities,"
Switzer says of the daily
agenda, adding that the
facility partners with local
schools and organizations,
so that there is never a dull
Moment for residents who
want to engage in whatever
their interests may be.
At Bellamy Fields, that
sometimes means altering
their programs to suit specific
needs, as was the case
for one resident who was a
lifelong gardener. When the
time came to move away
from his longtime home,
and into an assisted living
facility, the staff at Bellamy
Fields ensured that he had a
complete garden of his own .
While residents can enjoy
Although testimonials
from residents and their visiting
enough to shower praise on
the staff at Bellamy Fields,
the state has offered their
In its three years of service,
What's more, Bellamy
of New Hampshire's top 10
the Department of Health
For residents, it's a comforting
For relatives, it's the perfect
What makes Bellamy
other Greater Seacoast
facilities is that it specializes
specifically in residents who
are living with Alzheimer's,
dementia or other such cognitive
conditions and need
because of it.
While Bellamy Fields has
proven to be a leader in the
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Wheatgrass: It does a body great and it's tasty, too
BY MARK (HAG JR.
ATLANTIC NEWS STAff WRITER
All you need is a shot of it,
to see what it can do for you.
It's been heralded in recent
years as a "miracle" supplement,
as a tool to battle cancer,
aid in weight loss, as a
detoxifier, to prevent diabetes,
improve digestion, and
reduce high blood pressure,
in addition to contributing to
overall good health and wellbeing.
A two-ounce shot — a mere
mouthful — is the equivalent
to eating four whole pounds
of green vegetables.
With so many benefits to
the body, the real surprise
might be why most folks
aren't taking advantage of all
that wheatgrass has to offer.
As it turns out, wheatgrass
juice is not as easily accessible
as one might think; it can be
expensive through the few
venues that do offer it; and
perhaps most notoriously, it
has a bad reputation as tasting
downright horrible.
On the contrary, nothing
could be further from the
truth. Not only is this socalled
"mirade" drink for the
body affordable and available
here on the Seacoast, it even
tastes as sweet as it is silky
smooth.
"It's really sweet. It has a
sweet taste. People say that
it's almost sugary" says Alex
Vandermark, owner of The
Juicery, located at 51 Hanover
Street in Portsmouth.
Alex serves up single and
double shots of the establishment's
famous wheatgrass
shots every day, often to regular
customers who stop in
every morning for their quick
green-juice fix.
"It's best to take it on an
empty stomach, so that your
body can absorb it all in,"
Alex says. "A lot of people say
that they feel a burst of energy
after they take it, it's almost
like a b077, or a giddy kind
of feeling."
What's important about
wheatgrass is knowing how
to make it — and getting it
fresh.
Alex has the fresh-cut
grass delivered to The Juicery
from New England-based
Gourmet Greens, and uses a
juicer designed specifically
for extracting the nutritional
elements out of the grass to
make a liquid shot. The juicer
extracts a thick non-digestible
byproduct that can't be eaten,
while capturing the all-powerful
liquid.
"You can't just toss the
grass in a blender and make
a wheatgrass shot," Alex says
with a laugh, while demon-
strafing how the juicer works.
Wheatgrass supplements
were originally developed
in the 1930s by agricultural
chemist Charles Schnabel.
In recent years, as the general
public has become more
aware of the benefits of a
healthy diet — and the grave
effects of not paying attention
to what we consume
— wheatgras,s has gained a
powerful reputation as one
of the best available supplements
available anywhere.
Businesses have cashed in on
that popularity reaping the
rewards of the harvest, which
has also bloomed the general
perception that the wonderjuice
is expensive — and it
ikartdoestat isposma
can be.
But Alex serves up plenty
of wheatgrass shots to his
loyal customer base by keeping
the simplistic concoction
of fresh squeezed blades inexpensive
at $2.31 a shot (and
only a dollar and a couple
pennies more for a double).
This makes the supplement
not only available in the Seacoast,
but within the bounds
of any budget.
Eating four pounds of
greenery bought from the grocery
store every day would
be a lot more expensive (and
tough on the jawbone) than
simply sipping a single shot
of wheatgrass.
In essence, wheatgrass is
the young grass of the common
wheat plant. When harvested,
the thin blades can
be juiced into a richly-green
colored liquid that is bursting
with chlorophyll, amino
acids, minerals, vitamins and
enzymes all imperative to
good health.
While it is available in
many health food stores in
frozen, powder and even tablet
form, perhaps the best way
to fully benefit from all that
wheatgrass has to offer is to
drink it freshly juiced.
"I just don't trust the frozen
stuff," Alex says, insisting
that The Juicery only serves
fresh-juiced grass from Gourmet
Greens.
The results of a single
shot, as many of his customers
have testified, is almost
instantaneous, with an overall
increase in energy and generally
"good" feeling after
sipping down the silky supplement.
Of course, the long-term
benefits of including wheatgrass
in a regular diet are
much more far-reaching.
Wheatgrass is primarily
chlorophyll, the fundamental
basis of all plant life. Since
chlorophyll is high in oxygen,
it makes it an imperative
supplement for the brain, and
all other bodily tissues.
According to Dr. Ann
Wigmore's publication,
"The Wheatgrass Book," the
supplement increases red
blood-cell count and lowers
blood pressure, and cleanses
the blood, organs and gastrointestinal
tract of debris.
Wheatgrass also stimulates
metabolism and the body's
enzyme systems by enriching
the blood, and aids in reducing
blood pressure by dilating
the blood pathways throughout
the body.
"It stimulates the thyroid
gland, correcting obesity, indigestion,
and a host of other
complaints, and restores alkalinity
to the blood. The juice's
abundance of alkaline minerals
helps reduce over-acidity
in the blood. It can be used to
relieve many internal pains,
and has been used successfully
to treat peptic ulcers,
ulcerative colitis, constipation,
diarrhea, and other complaints
of the gastrointestinal
tract.
Dr. Wigmore continues,
"Wheatgrass is a powerful
detoxifier, and liver and blood
protector. The enzymes and
amino acids found in wheatgrass
can protect us from carcinogens
like no other food or
medicine. It strengthens our
pair of larger-than-life checks
representing the money
Earlier this year, Casey
made his yearly commitment
Heel Pain: Treatment and prevention
SPECIAL TO THE ATLANTIC NEV/S
EXETER I Have you ever
suddenly felt a dull, intermittent
pain in your heel that
ptogiessed to a sharp, constant
pain? If so, this may be
caused by a condition known
as plantar fasciitis. A pain
many people, induding runners,
have experienced.
Plantar fasciitis is caused
SPECIAL TO nit ATLANTIC NEWS
EXETER I Ever dreamed
of being honored on the field
at Fenway Park before a Red
Sox game, or imagined seeing
your name in lights on the
fans?
During the 2009 Boston
Red Sox regular season, all
presenting donors at American
Red Cross blood drives in
Northern New England have
by an inflammation of the
plantar fascia, which is the
tissue along the bottom of
your foot that connects your
heel bone to your toes. Symptoms
generally occur when
a person wears worn out or
improper shoes in combination
with an increase in their
exercise routine, in particular
an increase in intensity or
duration of running.
Risk factors for developing
plantar fasditis include
• Flat feet
• Walking barefoot
• High arched, rigid feet
• Increasing age and family
tendency
• Running on toes, hills
or very soft surfaces
• 'Poor arch support in
• Rapid change in activity
Give blood,
Stratham; and from 2:30-7:30
p.m. at the Casey Function
Center, located at 1950 Lafayette
Road in Portsmouth.
Fortunately, the majority of
people who develop plantar
fasditis can be treated without
surgery. Most patients get
relief from conservative treatments
which include strapping
or splinting the foot,
anti-inflammatory medications,
supportive shoe gear,
stretching, physical therapy
and corticosteroid injections.
However, when these measures
do not provide adequate
relief, surgical treatment may
be the best decision. There are
multiple surgical options, all
of which have been proven to
be effective in relieving pain.
The surgical treatments
range from the classic, more
surgically invasive procedure
which requires the patient to
keep weight off of the foot for
three weeks, to less invasive
SPECIAL TO THE ATLANTIC NEWS
CONCORD I As if the
growing number of reported
cases of H1N1 in New
Hampshire wasn't causing
health concerns, the cases
of Lyme disease around the
state appear to be growing
too.
The NH Department of
Health and Human Services
(DHHS) Division of Public
Health Services (DPHS) is
reporting an increase in the
number of cases of Lyme
disease in the Granite State.
There were almost 1600
reported cases of Lyme identified
in the state in 2008; in
2007 there were 901 identified;
and in 2006 there were
617 cases identified in NH.
Although a recent change
in the federal definition
of what constitutes a case
of Lyme disease is in part
responsible for the increase
in 2008, the frequency of
Lyme disease appears to be
increasing in the Granite
State.
Lyme disease is caused
by the bacterium Borrelia
burgdoferi and is transmitted
to people by the bite of
an infected black-legged tick
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Lyme disease numbers up
as new season begins
(also known as the deer tick).
The greatest risk for Lyme is
between the months of May
and August when the blacklegged
tick is in the juvenile
stage. At that point it's the
size of a poppy seed and
very difficult to detect, so
individuals may be unaware
they have been bitten.
Ticks that transmit Lyme
can also transmit other diseases,
such as anaplasmosis
and babesiosis. Although
not as common as Lyme,
both diseases can also cause
DHHS recommends taking
the following precautions
• Avoid tick-infested
areas such as overgrown
grass, brush and leaf litter
• Use insect repellent
labeled for ticks
• Wear protective clothing
(long pants and long sleeves
to keep ticks off skin)
• Do tick checks on yourself
and family members
after being outdoors
• Reduce ticks around
your home by keeping grass
short and removing leaf litter
• Speak with a healthcare
provider if bitten by a tick
• Monitor any tick bines
which may occur and contact
a healthcare provider if
symptoms develop.
Candlelight memorial reminds world, 'Never give up, never forget'
BY MARK CHAG JR.
ATLANTK NEWS STAf F WRIT11
SEACOAST 1 In the
wake of two of their most
promising fundraisers, and
in the shadow of possibly
losing crucial state funding,
AIDS Response Seacoast
(ARS) will soon join
members of the community
for a tranquil moment of
remembrance during the
International AIDS Candlelight
Memorial.
A program of the Global
Health Council, the International
AIDS Candlelight
Memorial is one of the oldest
and largest grassroots
mobilization campaigns for
HIV/AIDS awareness in
the world. Started in 1983,
the Candlelight Memorial
takes place every third Sunday
in May and is led by
a coalition of some 1,200
community organizations
in 115 countries hosting
local memorials that honor
the lost and raise social
consciousness about the
disease.
The theme for 2009 is
"Together, We Are the Solution."
Locally, ARS will host
a service on Sunday, May
17 at the North Church Parish
House Chapel located
on Spinney Road in Portsmouth.
The service begins
at 7 p.m. and will feature
music by The Bow Tie Guys
and Gina Connolly. The Rev.
Robert Stiefel, Ph.D. will be
the featured speaker, and
all are welcome to attend.
The -memorial service
comes only two weeks after
two of the most promising
fundraisers the organization
held — in a time when
funds are tighter than ever
due to a weak economy and
looming questions about
support from the state.
"We will absolutely
have Dining Out for Life
again next year," says ARS
Director Richard Wagner.
Dining Out for Life, which
was held on Thursday,
April 30, is an inte.i.lnational
event that was extended to
the Seacoast of New Hampshire
for the first time this
year. It included a dozen
participating restaurants
that donated a percentage
of their day's earnings to
ARS.
"There were a lot of
great people involved
and the restaurants were
exceptional. Already every
restaurant that took part
has signed aboard for next
year," Wagner says.
Brazo, the Green Monkey,
Blue Mermaid, Bob's
Broiled Chicken, Colby's
Breakfast & Lunch, Harbor's
Edge at Sheraton Harborside,
Radici, Taipei and
Tokyo, Anneke Jans, Tasty
Thai, Dairy Delight, and
the Cape Neddick Inn all
participated in the region's
inaugural Dining Out for
Phenom Labs is a premier provider
of quality sports nutrition producM
Life program, and ARS is
already welcoming restaurant
owners who would
like to take part in next
year's event.
"In a perfect world,
everyone in the community
would join in," says Wagner.
Following the Dining
Out for Life event, more
than 100 residents turned
out on Sunday, May 3 for
the 13th annual Seacoast
mouth to raise awareness
— and much needed funds
— for ARS.
In July, lawmakers
will vote on a bill (SB-67)
which could essentially
strip the state's five nonprofit
HIV/AIDS support
groups of essential funding,.Which,
combined with
lagging donations from a
weak economy, could be
the death rattle for one or
more of the organizations.
Initially, SB-67 called for
continued allocation of $1
million for the five organizations
for the upcoming
fiscal year which begins in
July. However, the recent
amendment to the bill axed
the dollar amount in lieu
of term "available AIDS
appropriations," of which,
essentially, there are none.
Even if the bill is passed,
if there are no "available
funds" in the Department
of Health and Human
Services to distribute, the
five organizations will be
instead scrambling for
other funding in order to
stay afloat.
is not until autumn, when
the annual Twilight Auction
will take place. Organizers
are currently shopping
around to determine where
the event will be held, and
are hoping that a company
with the appropriate space
may consider donating a
room for the function.
In the meantime, they
will host the annual candlelight
vigil. Not an evening
for fundraising, but
for remembering those
lost, and reminding people
to "never give up," and
"never forget," at the North
Church Parish House Chapel,
Taking a look at Healthy Vision Month
Ken Bukowski
BY KIN BUKOWSHI
SPICIAL TO THE Anminc NEWS
SEACOAST I May is
Healthy Vision Month, and
the occasion provides a great
opportunity to emphasize
the importance of following
proper eye safety guidelines
in all work environments.
According to Federal
Occupational Health, a
group within the US Department
of Health and Human
Services, more than 2,000
people suffer from eye injuries
each day and an estimated
1,000 of those occur
in American workplaces
alone. Ninety percent of
these injuries could be pre-
precautionary steps and
wore appropriate eyewear.
Preventative measures
at work
Always use proper eye
protection, especially if it
is assigned to the particular
job at hand. Safety glasses
and goggles should have
lenses that are impact-resistant
and meet the standards
of the American National
Standards Institute. They
can also be equipped with
side shields, cups or tinted
lenses.
Although not technically
considered to be eyewear,
shields and helmets can be
utilized as well. These are
mostly used when working
with chemicals or heat sources.
If operating machinery,
use machine guards, work
screens or other engineering
controls. It is recommended
to keep eyewash and a rigid
eye shield in the company
first-aid kit for emergencies.
Common causes of eye
injuries include: Flying
objects (bits of metal, glass);
tools; wind-blown particles;
chemicals; harmful radiation;
and any combination
of these or other hazards.
Workers who wear prescription
glasses must also
wear required eye protection.
Do not wear contact
lenses around smoke, dust
or chemical fumes. They can
become trapped under the
lenses, causing eye irritation
or damage. If this occurs,
remove the lens and rinse
the eyes for 15 minutes.
Seek medical attention, and
follow up with an eye care
professional.
Eye strain from
computer use
Eye protection is also
important in a office environment.
While working
at a computer won't cause
damage to the eyes, it can
cause eye strain and fatigue.
Symptoms include sore or
irritated eyes and trouble
focusing. The following can
help prevent eyestrain:
HAMPTON FALLS I Strokes, also known as "brain attacks," are
ranked as the third leading cause of death in the United States and
often occur without warning. In fact, four out of five people who suffer
a stroke have no apparent warning signs prior to the stroke.
The good news is that with early detection, 80 percent of strokes
can be prevented.
To that end, Life Line Screening Radiology will be conducting
stroke and osteoporosis screenings on Monday, May 18 at the First Baptist
Church of Hampton Falls, located at 3 Lincoln Avenue in Hampton
Falls. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.
Screenings are painless, accurate and affordable. They help identify
potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart
rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries
in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. In addition, a
bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk will be offered and is
appropriate for both men and women.
All five screenings take from 60-90 minutes to complete. Those
wishing to take part can register for a Wellness Package with Heart
Rhythm for $149.
Life Line Screening Radiology, LLC is dedicated to providing the
highest quality ultrasound technology at an affordable rate. Their goal
is to make people aware of undetected health problems and encourage
them to seek follow-up care with their physician. For more information
PORTSMOUTH I Where
May 16.
Moe's will be celebrating
Moe's will be serving
Phil "Moe" Pagano
opened his first sandwich
Rye Police Chief Kevin Walsh
during the conference.
But the season didn't get
off to a good start.
Rockingham County Attorney
Jim Reams took a moment
during the press conference to
announce that a downtown
Portsmouth restaurant had
been indicted for "prohibited
sales," in an incident involving
a man named Christopher
Pappajohn, who allegedly left
the restaurant intoxicated, and
"almost immediately" was
involved in an accident involving
a pedestrian. According to
the indictment, the business
could be fined as much as
$100,000 for the incident
Reams noted that this was
the second such indictment
involving restaurants serving
spirits in the state — the first
having come earlier this year
included an establishment in
Exeter, which allegedly overserved
a patron who was also
subsequently involved in an
accident.
Reams said that there
would be no less than nine
sobriety checkpoints planned
throughout the Seacoast this
summer in an effort to keep
the roadways safer for everyone.
While the DUI Mobile
Command Unit is the latest
tool in preventing unnecessary
accidents and fatalities, Chief
Magnant urges the general
public for help in enforcing the
law, asking anyone who sees
someone suspected of driving
shop in May of 1959 on Daniel
Street in Portsmouth. He
sold one type of sandwich,
now known as the Moe's
Original.
"The sandwich is based
on an old family recipe and
features mild cooked salami,
creamy provolone, and
all the same ingredients as
part in what is now known
as the "Battle of Saratoga,"
in 1777, one year after the
outbreak of the American
Revolution.
Now, history fans,
descendants and residents
alike are invited to relive
this chapter of American
program, beginning
at 7 p.m. on Monday, May
Christ, located 295 Atlantic
Avenue, North Hampton.
The program, which is
free and open to the public,
provides a "colorful history
of the North Hampton
militia," that "marched 318
miles to deliver critically
needed cannons and face
the most powerful army in
the world." It will be presented
by Jenny Landman
and Penny Holbert.
The Battle of Saratoga
is actually a generic reference
to a pair of battles that
occurred in September and
October, 1777, near Saratoga,
New York. The British
troops, led by General John
Burgoyne, were invading
from Quebec in an attempt
to march through New York
and, in essence, split New
England apart from the rest
of the colonies.
Veteran speaker, and together
they are the first husbandand-wife
both served as Post 35 guest
'LAUGHING WILD' WITH
GENERIC THEATER
KITTERY I Generic Theater
will present a reading
of Christopher Durang's
"Laughing Wild" on Tuesday, I
May 19 at 7 p.m. at Kittery's
Rice Public Library (main
building), located on Wentworth
Street in Kittery.
If the old romantic movie
"
"A Man and a Woman"
had been rewritten by the
deranged Durang, it might
have been something very
like this manic two-character
romp. She rants at length
about the irritations of contemporary
life, after encountering
a man who keeps her
waiting in line at a supermarket.
He, surviving her wrath,
responds with his own litany'
of indignation.
Then, in brief scenes that
follow their monologues, She
and He interact rather vigorously.
Sparks fly; but anyone
who may be expecting the
kind exchanged by screen
lovers Anouk Aimee and
Jean-Louis Trintignant is in
for a surprise.
"Laughing Wild" will be
read by longtime GT members
Betsy Kimball, Bruce
Allen, and Susan Turner. This
event is free and open to the
public.
The Rice Public Library is
just past Kittery's downtown
Wallingford Square and the
entrance to the Portsmouth
Naval Shipyard. After pass-
PORTSMOUTH PEARL
PORTSMOUTH I Come
"The Tragedy of Broadway,"
a fun performance designed
especially for the NHSPCA.
This event at "Chez
SPCA" will have all the glitz
and -glamour of a NYC cabaret,
hilarious musical evening
of mystery and romance
accompanied by a Broadway
Songbook sung by a talented
cast of characters.
Audience members will
rise to their feet as cabaret
fingers ... not knowing
The slimy snake of a producer,
at nothing to keep himself
out of the dog house. Enter
the bumbling bloodhound,
GOTTA WALK! — Marston School in Hampton observed "Walk
to School" Day on Wednesday, May 13, with 257 out of 412
students taking part A large group of students gathered at
the Hampton Academy parking lot, accompanied by several
teachers, school administrators, and a group from the Hampton
Walkers. Carrying banners which read 'Hampton Walks to
School,' the group left the lot and arrived at Marston with such
large numbers that a minor traffic jam was caused at the entrance
to the school. Many more students who live close to the school
also participated. Walking to and from school, or just taking a
short walk after school is a great way to keep active, especially
as the Spring weather continues to get better. Thanks were
expressed to all who participated in this healthy school event.
Got Allergies? Get Adjusted!
Dear friend,
When people see me around town, they usually
say 'Hey, I know you, you're Dr. Natalie. I've seen
your ad in the paper.' I want to share with you
another awesome story from someone in our office.
Elaine is the woman in the middle of the photo.
When she came into our office she had neck pain
and terrible allergies. Her doctor told her that not
only would she have neck pain, but also arthritis
for the rest of her life as the result of a car accident
and a snow skiing injury that both happened in her
20's. Elaine was devastated by this news. She felt
from watching other people with arthritis around
her that her pain level would simply get worse
over time. She was told to take arthritis medication
and ibuprofen daily to manage the pain and that
she would likely have to do this
for the rest of her life. She did
not like this idea. Elaine disliked
taking any medication at all.
Desperate and confused
about what to do, she listened to
a friend who suggested she try
chiropractic care for relief. She
came into our office. We did an
exam, took some films to see if
a spinal problem was causing
her pain, and then adjusted her
spine. She was happy that the
adjustment didn't hurt, actually,
she said it felt good! Elaine
was thrilled! In the following
weeks after starting care in our
office she began to feel much
better and gain flexibility. She
was back to running, riding her
bike, and doing the yard work.
All the things she thought she
may never do again. Like many
other people in our office, Elaine
was happily surprised that her
seasonal allergies dramatically improved, virtually
went away, after starting chiropractic care. She
doesn't need medications for pain or allergies!
This was huge for her! She had struggled with
her allergies for years and years, and took many
medications that only gave her partial relief. What
a positive change! She thanks us often for the
amazing changes she experienced with her health.
Chiropractic care has and continues to change her
life for the better.
What most people don't know is that the spine
houses and protects your nervous system, which
controls every function in the body. If the spine is
healthy, then the nerves work their best. The vital
link to your health and wellbeing is between the
spine and nervous system. Spinal misalignment
occurs with everyday stresses like sitting in front
of the computer, carrying backpacks, and driving
in our cars which causes pressure on nerves -
nerves that go to the head, lungs, heart, stomach,
and legs... the whole body. If the nerves don't
work right, the body doesn't work right. As
chiropractors, we adjust the spine to remove the
interference on the nerves (the misalignment) that's
not allowing the body to work properly or heal. It's
as simple as that.
The bottom line... Chiropractic works. It
works so well, that for years now there have been
more visits to alternative health therapies (like us)
than to traditional medical ones. Americans today
understand that taking drugs to cover up symptoms
makes little sense. Chiropractic is not only for
neck & back pain, headaches, stiffness, sciatica,
and scoliosis, but has been proven effective in
helping people with issues related to depression,
anxiety, infertility, allergies and asthma...and the
list goes on! I recently read in USA Today that
the drug industry is now rethinking their strategy
because medicine and prescription drugs usually
only deal with symptoms. They rarely deal with
Dr. Lyle, Elaine, Dr. Rogers
the cause of sickness. Chiropractors deal with a
cause. Everyday each person's body is exposed to
physical, chemical and emotional stressors in our
environment that are continually bombarding our
system. It is the job of our nervous system to detect
these stressors and interpret them. The nervous
system will either adapt to the stressors continuing
growth and repair cycles or adapt and cause
deterioration of function forcing the body into a
survival mode over time moving the body away
from health. Our vertebrae nudge their way out
of alignment from the movements and actions
we make everyday. Chiropractic helps adjust our
vertebrae so our nerve system can communicate
properly and keep our bodies functioning at its
Optimal Level for Health!
I want to tell you a little more about me. I am
forever grateful that I was raised in a chiropractic
family. I've been adjusted since I was a young girl,
and I will continue to get adjusted for the rest of
my life. My parents taught me the philosophy that
the power that made the body heals the body.
I now feel it is my life's purpose to educate my
community and help other people understand that
the body has an innate ability heals itself. If you
break your arm, it is not the cast that heals the
fracture, it is the nerve system that controls and
coordinates body physiology and facilitates the
healing of the injury. It happens no other way. You
have to care for your spine and nerve system
to have true health and well being due to the
relationship between the spine and nervous
system.
Some people like Elaine are coming to us
looking for a better way to create optimal health
for themselves and their families. Others come
to our office because their neck hurts or they have
low back pain. Some get their spine checked to see
if a spinal problem is leading to headaches, chronic
heartburn, asthma or allergies. Then there are the
patients with knee and shoulder
pain, digestive disorders, attention
issues or sleeping problems. We
even have little ones get checked
due to birth trauma and childhood
falls like learning how to walk. We
help people by correcting spinal
problems. We don't take credit
for curing those symptoms.The
adjustment removes the spinal
interference to the nerve system,
allowing the body to better heal
itself.
