ernard•primeau•montreal•jazz•ensembleMontreal-based drummerfromBernard Primeau's passion forjazz dates back to his mid-teenswhen he was inspired by themusic of Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, MaxRoach and others. In the late 1960s hestudied with Sonny Greenwich, CharlieBiddle and guitarist Nelson Symonds. Forseven years in the 1970s, Primeau livedand worked in San Francisco where heperfected his art with players such astrumpeter Eddie Henderson andsaxophonist Art Pepper.Upon his return to Montreal, Primeaucontinued his career, spending four yearsin Oliver Jones' trio. In 1989, he formedhis own group. He has kept his ensembletogether in various forms ever since,performing regularly in all sorts of venuesand contexts throughout Canada andEurope. Bernard Primeau's resume as aleader now includes over five hundredperformances, eight recordings and threevideos.MontrealThree of Primeau's more recentrecordings have featured a trio of thegreatest trombonists in jazz - Detour in1994 with Slide Hampton, Virage in 1997with Ray Anderson and Evolution in <strong>20</strong>02with Hugh Fraser. He is the winner of twoFelix awards, Quebec's Junos.One of Primeau's goals is to bring newlisteners to jazz. He does this by mixingrecognizable jazz standards with originalworks that express a more daring andcontemporary approach to music.As a long-standing member of theQuebec jazz community, Primeau hascreated a supportive environment for thedevelopment of the young Quebecmusicians who have played in his group.Players such as Remi Bolduc, Yannick Rieuand Normand Guilbeault are among thosewho have benefited from this experience.For this performance, Bernard Primeauwelcomes trombonist David Grott to theEnsemble, and returns the same fourmusicians who put on such a great showhere in October <strong>20</strong>02 – Bill Mahar ontrumpet, Alexandre Cote on sax, JohnRoney on piano and Dave Watts on bass.FRIDAY • JAN 28DOORS 8PM • SHOW 9PM • MEMBERS $12/GUESTS $16chris•tarry’s•project•33fromNew YorkVancouver &TorontoNow based inNew York, bassist,composer andproducer Chris Tarryis best known as amember of the Juno awardwinning Metalwood group.That said, his musical talentsas one of Canada's premiereelectric bassists are in greatdemand in a variety ofcontexts covering all aspectsof the jazz spectrum, from theavant garde with cellist PeggyLee and clarinetist FrancoisHoule, to contemporary jazz.Prior to relocating fromVancouver to New York, heperformed and recorded withvirtually everyone of note onthe west coast city's jazzscene.Chris Tarry is originallyfrom Calgary. He obtained hismusic degree from therenowned Berklee College ofMusic in Boston, taught in thejazz studies program atCapilano College in NorthVancouver for several yearsand was one of the cofoundersof Maximum Music,a company that has producedmany fine recordings with anBernard Primeau - drumsBill Mahar - trumpetAlexandre Cote - saxemphasis on the best jazzplayers in Vancouver.Tarry has been nominatedmany times (and has wonseveral times) at the JunoAwards, CanadianIndependent Music Awards,Georgia Straight MusicAwards, Canadian NationalJazz Awards, and the WestCoast Music Awards.Chris Tarry's recent workwith John Scofield, MinoCinelu, DJ Logic, MikeMurley, guitarists BenMonder and Wayne Krantz,and New York's MahavishnuProject, amongst others, havetaken him across NorthAmerica and abroad. Thebreadth of his currentschedule exemplifies hisgrowing reputation as one ofthe best electric bassists injazz.Tarry's Project 33 cameDavid Grott - tromboneJohn Roney - pianoDave Watts - bassabout as a result of a desireto record with percussionistMino Cinelu. To fill out thegroup for the recording, headded Chris Gestrin on piano,Kelly Jefferson on sax andJesse Zubot on drumprogramming. carol•franJump blues, soulfromblues, jazz and rhythmLouisiana and blues - Carol Fran hasbeen singing it all fornearly fifty years. Her crystal clearvoice and soulful, engaging stylehave made her a favourite withblues audiences everywhere.Carol Fran was born inLafayette, Louisiana, and was tobecome a constant presence on theNew Orleans club circuit as a singerand pianist. In 1957, she cut herfirst sides for the historic R&B labelExcello, scoring a regional smashwith her debut single, Emmitt Lee.She soon signed on as a featuredvocalist with legendary Excello artistGuitar Slim, and toured with JimmyReed, Lee Dorsey, and Joe Tex.Carol continued to perform both liveand in the studio until the mid-1960s, when she decided to goback home to Louisiana and limither career to singing in the GulfCoast nightclub circuit.In the early 1980s, Fran marriedClarence Hollimon, one of Texas'premier blues guitarists. They formedardbird <strong>Suite</strong>BLUESthe Hollimon Express and touredextensively in the United States andEurope and were heralded as one ofthe best blues, R&B, and soul actsin the country. They released threealbums: Soul Sensation in 1992,followed by See There! in 1994 andIt's About Time in <strong>20</strong>00. Carol Franreleased Fran-tastic in <strong>20</strong>02 toexcellent reviews. She continues tokeep a busy performing schedule,and recently completed a Europeantour. A documentary film about herlife will be released this spring.Edmonton's Graham Guest Bandwill back up Carol Fran. GrahamGuest is regarded as one ofCanada's finest blues and rootspiano players, and leads a bandcomprised of top blues musicians.Graham has played keyboards withthe Sue Foley band for six years andhas toured widely in Canada, theUnited States and Europe. While workingprimarily in the jazz genre, Tyler is also in highdemand as a funk and latin drummer.Among others, his drumming influencesinclude Max Roach, Roy Haynes and BillStewart.The last 10 years have taken Tyler Hornbyon numerous tours around Canada, theUnited States, and Europe. Aside fromplaying original compositions with his ownquartet, Tyler has performed with such artistsas Bob Mintzer, Ingrid Jensen, ChipStephens, Brad Goode, Alain Caron, FrankMantooth, Mike Tomaro, Hugh Fraser, andDecidedly Jazz Danceworks.Tyler completed his Bachelor of Music inJazz Studies at the University of Calgary,where he has been a sessional instructor. Heis also the founder and director of the annualDrumset Educational Camp in Calgary.Tyler is currently pursuing his Masters inJazz Performance/Pedagogy at the Universityof Colorado, where his studies include drumset with Paul Romaine and composition withGrammy Award-winning pianist ChipStephens. Tyler's compositions contain postbop,contemporary and odd meter influenceswith unique harmonic twists.Between <strong>20</strong>00 and <strong>20</strong>02, Tyler releasedtwo albums with Terrain, the electric jazzquartet where he serves as the drummer, coleader,and co-composer.
