Elston ManufacturingFrom Sanders to Gopher GettersIn 1925, Rue R. Elston, the founderof the Elston Company and hiswife, Clara, and son, Wendell,moved to Sioux Falls, SD from Spencer,Iowa. Rue found employment with theManchester Biscuit Company. The nextyear his son Jack was born. In 1927 Rue,wife Clara, and two sons, Wendell andJack moved to Minneapolis, MN whereRue found work as a bus driver for TwinCity Motor Bus.One snowy night, Rue saw a youngman get hit by a car while spreadingsand with a shovel at a bus stop. Theman lost his leg in the accident. Afterseeing this accident, Rue thought a unitcould be manufactured to mount infront of the drive wheels of a bus andbe electrically controlled by the driver.Such a unit could help eliminate thistype of accident by spreading sand infront of the drive wheels of the bus. Afterextensive testing and engineering,the first units were installed on Greyhoundbuses.In 1938 a corporation was formed tomanufacture the Elston Electric Sander.Today sanders are used on city busessuch as those in Seattle, Washington andare mandatory on school buses in manyNorthern States. They are also used onfire trucks and a special design for railroadtrains.In 1952 Rue, and his son Jack, engineeredand designed the Elston CargoSpace heater, a unit that controls theinside temperature of semi-trailersthat transport products that cannotbe frozen. Through the years severalmodels have been designed.
