FAIRFAX WIND SYMPHONY
The Fairfax Wind Symphony was formed in the fall of 1999 for the benefit of local music directors
and teachers. Its primary focus is to read and prepare wind literature of all grade levels, and to
explore contemporary rehearsal techniques and procedures. In addition to presenting numerous
local concerts, the ensemble has been featured at 12 VMEA In-service Conferences, presenting new
music clinic-concerts, three Potomac International Music Festivals, and the 2006 Mid-West Clinic.
In February 2004, Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel accepted the position of Resident Guest Conductor
and continues to make annual appearances with the Wind Symphony. Other guest artists have
included Brian Bowman, Charles West, Moe Turrentine, Lance LaDuke, Dale Underwood, Carl
Bly, Anthony Maiello, John Casagrande, Dennis Zeisler, Mark Camphouse, Jim Lunsford, Robert
W. Smith, Don Lucas, Russell Penney, Mark Norman, Ed Fraedrich, Richard Crain, Roger Behrend,
Jeff Bianchi, Gary Green, David Maslanka, and Velvet Brown.
Fairfax County Public Schools Academy credits are available for enrolled FCPS participants, as well
as recertification points for current FCPS teachers. The group is open to all current, retired, and
future music educators in the metropolitan Washington area, as well as other interested musicians.

MEET THE ARTISTS
Mark Camphouse (Conductor, Mason Wind Symphony) A product of the rich cultural life of
Chicago, composer-conductor Mark Camphouse was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1954. He holds
undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Northwestern University, where he studied
conducting with John P. Paynter, composition with Alan Stout, and trumpet with the late Vincent
Cichowicz. A scholarship from the prestigious Civic Orchestra of Chicago (Training Orchestra
of the Chicago Symphony) enabled Camphouse to study trumpet privately for two years with
legendary Chicago Symphony Principal Trumpet Emeritus, Adolph Herseth.
Camphouse began composing at an early age, with the Colorado Philharmonic premiering his First
Symphony when he was 17. His 28 published works for wind band (Alfred, Kjos, Southern, and
TRN Music Companies) have received widespread critical acclaim and are performed widely in the
U.S. and abroad. Many may be heard on the Albany, Citadel, and Summit labels. His compositions
have been performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Orchestra
Hall in Chicago, and Royal Albert Hall in London, and at conferences of the World Association
for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, National
Association for Music Education, American Bandmasters Association, and Midwest International
Band and Orchestra Clinic. Principal commissions include those by the John P. Paynter Foundation,
William D. Revelli Foundation, Bands of America, Inc., the United States Army Band, the
United States Marine Band, Northshore Concert Band, and some of America’s finest high school,
community, and university bands, including Yale and Northwestern.
Mr. Camphouse has served as a guest conductor, lecturer, and clinician in 43 states, Canada, and
Europe. He was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 1999 and has
served as coordinator of the National Band Association Young Composer Mentor Project since
2000. He conceived and edited the unique four-volume book series for GIA Publications, Composers
on Composing for Band. He was featured in a nationally broadcast interview on NPR’s “Weekend
America,” focusing on his composition entitled A Movement for Rosa, honoring late Civil Rights
heroine Rosa Parks on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her single act of courage sparking the
modern Civil Rights movement.
In 2006, Camphouse joined the faculty of the School of Music at George Mason University at the
rank of full professor where he serves as conductor of the Wind Symphony and teaches courses in
conducting and composition. Other principal artistic, administrative, and teaching positions he has
held include serving as Music Director and Conductor of the New Mexico Music Festival at Taos
Symphony Orchestra (1977-1982), Music Division Head of the Virginia Governor’s School for
the Arts (1985-1989), Acting Dean of Music of New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida
(1998-1999 academic year), and Director of Bands at Radford University in Virginia (1984-2006).
Professor Camphouse served as Interim Director of the George Mason University School of Music
during the 2009-2010 academic year.
Camphouse won the 15th Annual National Band Association Composition Competition in 1991,
received the 1991 Radford University Dedmon Award for Professorial Excellence (Radford’s highest
faculty honor), and attained regional finalist status in the prestigious White House Fellowship
Competition in 1992. Virginia Governor Mark Warner presented Professor Camphouse with a
2002 Outstanding Faculty Award, sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
(SCHEV), the Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s colleges and universities for
demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and public service.
Mr. Camphouse has been married to soprano Elizabeth Ann Curtis (Director of Mason’s Potomac
Arts Academy) since 1982. They have twin daughters, Beth and Briton.

Stanley R. Schoonover (Founding Conductor, Fairfax Wind Symphony) Stanley R. Schoonover
is in his 14th season conducting the Fairfax Wind Symphony. In 2009, he retired after 32 years
of service in public school education. He served Fairfax County Public Schools for 27 years, 11
as Music Supervisor, in addition to serving as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Chairman
at James W. Robinson, West Springfield and Mount Vernon High Schools for 16 years, and
Bangor (Pennsylvania) High School for four years. Ensembles under his direction enjoyed 19 years
of consecutive Superior ratings and national and international recognition for their outstanding
performances, including two Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic appearances, three
National Music Clinics, the National Concert Band Festival, the Mid-East Clinic, and 12 VMEA
In-Service Conference appearances. Mr. Schoonover is the Founding Conductor of the Fairfax
Wind Symphony, and currently serves as Lead Coordinator for the Music for All National Concert
Band Festival.
Mr. Schoonover received his B.Sc. Degree, cum laude, in Music Education from Gettysburg
College, and a Master of Music degree from West Chester University. Postgraduate work includes
study at the University of Virginia, George Mason University, and the University of Michigan. He
has studied conducting with Robert Zellner, Kenneth Laudermilch, Arnald D. Gabriel, William D.
Revelli, H. Robert Reynolds, and Anthony Maiello.
Mr. Schoonover serves as an active Past-President of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors
Association. He is the recipient of multiple Citation of Excellence awards from the National Band
Association, and is an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. In
2006 he was recognized as the VMEA Outstanding School Administrator. Memberships include
Phi Mu Alpha, Phi Beta Mu, Sigma Nu, NAME, the American School Band Directors Association,
the East Stroudsburg Music Hall of Fame, and the National Band Association. Directing credits
include American Music Abroad, the Virginia Ambassadors of Music, the National Capital Cappies
Orchestra, and numerous Regional and All-State ensembles. He is in demand as a clinician,
adjudicator, and conductor across the United States.
Anthony J. Maiello (Guest Conductor) is from Washington, D.C., and makes professional
appearances both nationally and abroad conducting music festivals, adjudicating ensembles, and
presenting clinics, lectures, and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the
Bahamas, and Europe. He conducted musical activities for the Gold Medal Ceremonies at the
1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, served as Musical Director for Music Festivals
International, was selected as President of International Association of Jazz Educators – New York
State Chapter, and is a guest clinician for Yamaha Corporation and Warner Bros. Publications.
In 2010, he was inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame at Music for All’s Indianapolis
headquarters.
Professional recording credits include conducting the American Wind Symphony and additional
studio ensembles for Alfred/Belwin Publications. Locally, Maiello has served as Associate Conductor
of The McLean Orchestra, McLean, Virginia; been appointed an Honorary Conductor of The
United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C.; and was a participant in the National Conducting
Institute with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., to
which he has provided his services as a cover conductor.
Maiello received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College,
Ithaca, New York, in 1965 and 1967 respectively, and has extensive experience teaching in the
public schools and at the university level. While at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College
of SUNY, Potsdam, New York, he served as a Professor of Music and Chairman of Performance,
where he taught Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Applied Clarinet, Woodwind Techniques,
Percussion Techniques, and conducted the Crane Wind Ensemble.
Presently Associate Director and a Professor of Music with George Mason University’s School of
Music, Maiello conducts the Mason Repertory Orchestra and teaches graduate and undergraduate

Conducting, Jazz Theory & Arranging, and Advanced Sight-Singing. From 1996 to 2009, he
conducted the Mason Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. Under his direction, the
ensembles at both Crane and George Mason University commissioned new works, made numerous
recordings, and appeared at national and international conferences. Throughout his career, Maiello
has published musical compositions for string orchestra and is the author of Conducting Nuances
(GIA Publications, Inc.), Conducting: A Hands-On-Approach (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications),
and co-author of The 21st Century Band Method (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications). In 2007,
Maiello was awarded the title of “University Professor” by the George Mason University Board
of Visitors, the highest rank given to Mason faculty members. He was also recently presented
with the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia “Signature Award” for promoting music in America. Maestro
Maiello is the founder and Conductor/Artistic Director of the American Festival Pops Orchestra, a
professional ensemble in the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area dedicated to promoting
and performing the finest in American popular music.
