David Smithtaught voice, choral conducting, musiceducation and theory, Smith was alsoknown for his distinctive bass-baritonevoice. A native of Chewelah, WA, heserved as minister of music in severalchurches, including Jefferson City’s FirstBaptist Church.Catering to Alumni: Havely, ‘93,Joins C-N Advancement TeamTen years after earning a cum laudeConsumer Services degree, TARA GULLINGHAVELY has returned to C-N to serveher fellow alumni as assistant director ofAlumni Relations. She brings with her awealth of customer service experience thatexcites Alumni Relations Director SuzanneMatheny, ‘65.“I anticipate Tarataking our existingprograms and helpingus see ways tostrengthen them, but Ithink she will alsobring fresh ideas forcreating new programsand services,”Tara Havely, ‘93said Matheny. “Tara’s unique combinationof personality and skills point towardher becoming an effective leader andrepresentative of the <strong>College</strong>.”With several years in sales andmanagement, Tara’s resume includesserving as a catering manager at theUniversity of Tennessee, where shecoordinated events for as many as 3,000guests. Prior to that, she worked forthe UT System as an extension agentin Shelbyville, where she oversaw4-H programming and worked with schooladministrators, teachers, students andparents to ensure a successful cocurricularexperience.“I believe this is an exciting time in thelife of <strong>Carson</strong>-<strong>Newman</strong> and I lookforward to being a small part of all thewonderful things in store for my alma mater,”says Tara.Grateful for the preparation shereceived, Tara notes that she likes servingall kinds of alumni from the “scientiststudying causes of cancer to the stay-athomemom who daily nurtures her family.”Her own family includes Brian, ‘93x, whoshe met while they were students, and theirchildren, Ethan and Jonathan.SWIM Ministry earns State AwardJust three years after its formation,Supporting Women in Ministry (SWIM),an organization founded by <strong>Carson</strong>-<strong>Newman</strong> students and faculty, has beenhonored for its work. The organizationreceived the Betty Galloway Advocacy forWomen in Ministry Award at theTennessee Cooperative Baptist Fellowshipannual meeting.SWIM began in January 2000 as acampus organization of both women andmen devoted to encouraging women inChristian ministry. Objectives for theorganization include involving membersin the study of biblical faith and Christianlife, educating the campus about issuesregarding women in ministry and trainingmembers for a life of Christian service.Audrey Williams,‘04, accepted theGalloway Awardon behalf of C-N’sSWIM organization.Faculty <strong>2003</strong>Just as each fall brings new freshmento campus, it also brings new facultymembers.
