Medical Revalidation for Locum Doctors Thursday 28 October 2010 Royal College of Surgeons 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields London WC2A 3PE Revalidation will be a continuous fi ve-year process and will present many practical challenges to employers as they ensure that they have the capacity to enable delivery at a pace that is in keeping with the expectations of the GMC. For responsible offi cers it means ensuring that systems of local clinical governance, quality assurance and appraisal are suffi ciently robust to facilitate revalidation. For locum doctors it means providing evidence on an annual basis that shows they are up to date and fi t to practice. The conference will start with a brief introduction from the Chair, Dr Allan Cole, Medical Director, NHS Revalidation Support Team, followed by a series of presentations from high profi le doctors who will provide a practical guide on how to prepare for medical revalidation for locum doctors and employers of locum doctors. Topics will include an update on the GMC consultation for the medical revalidation of doctors, the strengthened appraisal process including Good Medical Practice domains and attributes, the role of the responsible offi cer, specialty standards and the role of the Colleges and advice on what systems and processes should be in place for the revalidation of locum doctors. Biographies Dr Allan Cole Medical Director, Revalidation Support Team Allan is considered one of the most experienced medical managers in the country, having been Medical Director for University Hospitals of Leicester for 17 years. He served on the Tooke review into Modernising Medical Careers and sits on the Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee of NICE. He led the early adoption of consultant appraisal in Leicester, 2001 which resulted in UHL being chosen as one of the national pathfi nder pilot sites for revalidation. He is a Senior Policy Advisor at the National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) and maintains a modest clinical practice as a Consultant Anaesthetist in Leicester. Dr Andrew Tomlinson Senior Vice President, Royal College of Anaesthetists Andrew has enjoyed an extensive career as a Consultant Anaesthetist at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for the last 25 years. Throughout his professional career he has maintained a major interest in medical education and training and in 2004 he was elected to Council of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He has been Chair of both the Examinations Committee and the Training Committee, and was instrumental in leading signifi cant changes to both. The most recent was Chairing the Editorial Board that re-wrote the CCT in Anaesthetics: 2010, which was approved by PMETB. Dr Colin Barrett Chief Medical Offi cer, Medacs Healthcare Colin is a Principal in General Practice in Glasgow and has signifi cant experience in both in hours General Practice and Out of Hours (OOH) practice on a UK wide basis. He was integral in the set up of NHS24 in Scotland and subsequently became their Associate Medical Director, with responsibility for IMT policy and decision support software. In the past Colin has worked on the NHS Direct Joint Development Team, and was Medical director for Serco Health. Colin is currently the Chief Medical Offi cer for Medacs Healthcare. Mr Anil Banerjee ENT Consultant, Royal College of Surgeons Revalidation Committee Anil is the Assistant Medical Director for Senior Medical Staff Development at University Hospitals of Leicester. Within this role the main component is strengthened appraisal and revalidation. Anil sits on the Recertifi cation Committee for the Royal College of Surgeons and is the surgical liaison for pilot work on revalidation between the RCS and UHL. He is a Member of Council of The British Society of Otology and has previously been Vice President for the Section of Otology at the Royal Society of Medicine as well as a Council Member of ENT UK and the Specialist Advisory Committee for ENT. He maintains his clinical practice as a Consultant ENT Surgeon in Leicester. Dr Tim Brabants MBE Olympic Gold Medalist & Medical Doctor Tim is a British sprint kayaker who has competed in three Summer Olympics. He has won three medals, one gold (2008: K-1 1000 m) and two bronzes (2000: K-1 1000 m, 2008: K-1 500 m). In 2005 he took a year off from competitive kayaking to complete his medical studies at the highly regarded University of Nottingham followed by a spell as a doctor in Jersey. He won a gold medal in the K-1 1000 m event at the European Championships and a silver medal in the same event at the World Championships in Szeged in August 2006. Tim was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2009 New Years Honours List for his services to kayaking.
