Growth in private cartraffic was more rapid in the first part of the period than in the urban area in general,and the decline after 1981 was not so severe. Taxi traffic is less prominentcross-harbour than in the rest of the urban area, reflecting the predominant use oftaxis for short journeys. Passenger van traffic grew strongly in the first part of theperiod, but declined thereafter.
