Our students grew in their insights and developed some powerful coping skills for living in a complicated teenworld. At the end of the seventh session, students taped a leaf on our 7 Habits Tree – describing the thing theywould take away with them from their learning. Here is what they had to say:“At the beginning, I thought there was no point to this, but near the end I realized how much this could help inlife.”“I learned that when communicating, be calm and the results will be better.”“Try to understand myself more so I can understand others.”“It’s amazing how much better we work together.”“I learned that I can accomplish so much more when I have the help of other people. I won’t get very far onmy own.”“7 Habits is addictive.”“I listen to other people’s point of view more often, instead of just automatically reacting much more thanusual.”“I like knowing that we don’t have to be anyone but ourselves.”“I love 7 Habits . . I thought it was a fun time. I learned a lot of cool things. I learned to control your own life, don’t let someone else do it for you.”“The paths you choose now can affect you forever.”“Think win-win not win-lose when you have a problem find a way where you both get what you want.”“If you spend all your time worrying about what people think about you, you don’t get to spend your timedoing what you want to do.”

Career PlanningCareer SymposiumCounsellors support students by exposing them to the world of work. Grade 9 students attend the careersymposium every year and participate in activities that stimulate their planning for their future.Career CruisingCareer Cruising is an incredible tool for researching career information. The website allows students to take amatchmaker quiz to determine a potential career that suits them. It also gives young people a true sense ofwhat the job may actually be like by providing information like a “a day in the life” of someone in a career. Italso looks at what people like and dislike about their jobs, and provides information on pay and what the futureoutlook is for that career. Students who have an idea of a career path seem to be more focused with theirschool work than students who haven’t even imagined where they maybe in the future. Mediation to Solve ConflictMunroe staff has been working on their mediation skills through the Resolutions Skill Training Center. Amediation process complements our beliefs that conflict is normal, and that it can be resolved and restored bybringing people together – with words. Many students have already been a part of a mediation to solve a problem. It is our hope that when your son or daughter comes home with a concern that you encourage them to seek outthe support of an adult for a mediation instead of reacting in a physical way.

Special PresentationsCyber Bullying Grade 7 PresentationBased on school needs the counsellor and school social worker invite a variety of speakers to present to ourstudents. This year, Shannon Fedorak, constable for the Winnipeg Police Service, presented information to ourGrade 7 students on the implications of using the Internet to bully. Students listened intently to the messageand really enjoyed the information that Constable Fedorak provided.

Schoolwide Student SurveysAll Munroe Junior High students completed a confidential survey that asked them to identify the top five thingsthey were most concerned about from a list of 30. The survey is designed to help us collect information that willbe useful for addressing the social-emotional factors that could prevent students from learning and to ensurethat ,as a school, we recognize and address students’ needs in our building. The school social worker, Gail Bryant and Angie Cieszecki, school counselor, have shared the results with theparent advisory council, students and staff. Here are some of the results for students in grades 7, 8 and 9 regarding “Who I Go to for Help,” and the “Top 5Concerns.” The survey allows us to collect information that will be useful for addressing the social-emotionalfactors that could prevent students from learning.Survey Says – 7’s Who I Go to for HelpGrade 7- Who I Get Help From403530252015MaleFemale1050A friend A parent An adult at school An adult outsideschoolA brother or sister
