The best Paints in Europe headed to Aachen in pursuit
Back in the “old days,” after
winning a European Paint
Horse Championship you
had to wait two years to
defend your title. The show was held
only every other year. That’s a long
time, whether you are raising top-notch
halter horses or are a Youth exhibitor
whose time is running out.
Take 18-year-old Maya Franke, for
example. Back in 2003, she placed
third overall in Youth trail with her
mare GMG Blueeyed Sally, winning
the bronze European Champion title.
Then, in 2005, she returned, repeated
her bronze in Youth trail, and added
four golds, a silver and a bronze to her
collection—as well as the All-Around
Youth title. The year 2006 was going
to be the last year she would be eligible
to compete in the Youth division.
Luckily for Maya, she didn’t need
to wait two more years. A forwardthinking
decision was made to hold
the championship show annually, and
it returned to the prestigious equestrian
facility in Aachen, Germany, last
October, just a month after the site
welcomed hundreds of horses and
thousands of spectators for the FEI
World Equestrian Games.
Aachen, located in northwest Germany,
is at the heart of Europe, close to
The Netherlands and Belgium, easily
accessible from Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam
and Frankfurt. It’s known as the
birthplace of the European spirit, a city
of horses and host to high-level equestrian
events year-round.
From October 3–8, the American
Paint Horse was the featured star in
Aachen. The 2006 European Paint
Horse Championship, organized by
Paint Horse Club Germany, attracted
260 horses from eight countries. Solid
Paint-bred classes for Youth and Amateurs,
as well as a Youth Team Tournament
were added this year. In all,
700 entries competed for 190 medals
at what was Europe’s largest Paint
Horse show.
Striking gold, silver
and bronze
While European exhibitors share
many of the same challenges as their
American cousins, they also face some
formidable obstacles on the trail to the
top. For example, gasoline costs more
than three times the U.S. average.
Western tack and clothing are more expensive
and harder to find. There are
fewer shows, so fewer opportunities to
hone skills and prepare horses.
Reaching the European Championships
is an achievement, a testament
to the time, sacrifice and dedication
spent getting there. Spending
At Europe’s largest Paint Horse show—the European Championships—700
entries competed for 190 medals.
a few days in the company of people
who share a passion for the Paint
Horse breed, while watching and exhibiting
some of the best Paints in Europe,
is also a great reward.
Of course, for the competitive spirit
there are medals to be won. To become
a European Champion and win
a gold medal, there must be at least
three horses shown in a class. With
four to five horses, a Reserve Champion
and silver medal are also
awarded. In a class with six or more
entries, a bronze medal is given to the
horse placing third overall.
Among the 260 horses competing,
there were a handful that merited special
honors.
If there was an award for the hardest
worker at this year’s show, Maya
Franke would have won it. Instead,
she went home with her second consecutive
All-Around Youth title after
she and her mare competed in 11
Youth and two Open classes.
In the Youth division, Maya earned a
European Championship title in
hunter hack, a Reserve Championship
in trail, and bronzes in reining, showmanship,
and Western pleasure. And if
that wasn’t enough, she finished fourth
in Senior trail and was the European
Champion in Senior Western riding,
repeating her 2005 gold in that event.
“It was quite the feeling,” said
Maya about winning the Youth All-
Around. “The competition was
tougher than last year, so I really felt I
did something special.”
Because she doesn’t live close to a
trainer, Maya did most of her training
herself. . During the summer, she
worked with Christel Jagfeld, a German
trainer. Otherwise, when she was home,
she would ride “Sally” a couple of miles
to the closest riding facility, and call
Jagfeld when something wasn’t working.
“One of the most remarkable moments
was the Youth Western pleasure
class, since we rode in the same stadium
where the FEI World Equestrian
Games reining competition was
held a month before,” Maya said. “I
never rode in such a big arena before,
and on top of that, the sun was shining.
It was a wonderful experience.”
Sally, a 1998 bay tovero, is owned
by Astrid Franke, Maya’s mother.

Reaching the European Championships is an achievement, a testament to the time, sacrifice and dedication spent
getting there.
Bred by Marianne and Heinz-
Guenter Geisel of Schrecksbach, Germany,
the Frankes have owned Sally
since she was a weanling.
Manuela Wilkens of Garrel, Germany,
won her first All-Around Amateur
honors with her mare, Docs J Diamond
Delta. Throughout the week, the
pair placed steadily in the top 10 in Amateur
classes: horsemanship, hunt-seat
equitation, Junior hunter under saddle,
Western pleasure, trail, showmanship
and 3-year-old and older mares.
“My goal was to ride ‘Elsbet’ the
exact same way at the show as I did at
home,” said Manuela. “I did, and I was
very satisfied with my performance. We
worked very hard all year long.”
In the Open division, Manuela and
the 2001 chestnut tobiano were Reserve
Champions in hunter hack. But
one of the greatest moments for
Manuela was when Ralf Hoffeld
showed Elsbet to the Reserve Championship
in Junior trail.
“It’s always a touching moment for
me to see those two,” said Manuela.
Hoffeld, who is Manuela’s trainer,
is more importantly her friend and
spouse.
Docs J Diamond Delta was bred by
Dr. Alena Juha of Schortens, Germany.
Manuela has owned the mare
since she was a weanling.
“I call her Elsbet,” said Manuela, “but
she’s our little ‘diamond in the rough.’ ”
Two horses shared the spotlight as
all-around champions in the Open division.
Docs J Jetadeebrand, owned
by George Maschalani of Erbach-
Rossbach, Germany, earned the title
in shows 1, 2 and 5. XP Titans Tom
Dooley, owned and bred by Sabine
Gresens of Morfelden-Walldorf, Germany,
was the All-Around Open winner
in shows 3 and 4.
Docs J Jetadeebrand, shown by
Maschalani, Alexandra Jagfeld and
Ulrike Mohr, earned points in halter,
Junior Western pleasure, Junior
hunter under saddle, Junior hunter
hack and Junior trail, where he finished
third overall and earned the
bronze medal.
HARDY OELKE
With her more than 20 years experience
as a trainer, this is not the first time
one of Maschalani’s horses has won an
all-around award. But that doesn’t
make this honor any less special.
“I never go to a Championship
with the expectation that my horses
are going to win something,” said
Maschalani. “I’m always glad if they
perform nicely, if they are with me,
and they move well. That is the best.”
“ ‘Stoffel’ [which means ‘stuffed animal’
in German] is not like a stud.
He’s very sweet, very nice, very gentle,
like a teddy bear. But I hadn’t ridden
him in a year,” said Maschalani,
who purchased Docs J Jetadeebrand
as a 2-year-old from breeder Dr. Alena
Juha of Schortens, Germany.
“I use him to teach my working
students about pleasure and trail. And
I brought eight horses to Aachen, so I
only had time to ride Stoffel two days
before the European Championship.”
Given the little time he had to prepare
his horse, Maschalani was very
pleased.
“I hope to have more time for him
in the next year,” said Maschalani. “I
am glad to have the chance to ride
such great Paint Horses.”
XP Titans Tom Dooley, shown by
Marko Dumeier and Sarah Posthoff,
won reserve European Championships
in Senior hunter under saddle
and 3-year-old and older stallions.
The 2000 sorrel overo stallion was
also named the Reserve Champion
stallion in shows 1 and 4.
“We are so proud because we raised
him and he turned out to be a versatile
horse, very good minded, and
very easy for an Amateur to show—
as Sabine’s results in the Amateur Se-
nior Western pleasure have proven,”
said Dumeier. “By going reserve, he
shows that with a conformationally
correct horse you can win in both halter
and performance classes.”
Showing solid Paint-breds is quite
popular in Europe, and the Championships
offered a full slate of classes
for them in three divisions: Open,
Amateur and Youth. In all, 18 percent
of the entries were solid Paint-breds.
One of the top competitors was the
duo of Buddys Bourbon and Ulrike
Mohr, of Bensheim, Germany. She
exhibited the 1998 sorrel gelding in
nine classes, clinching the Amateur
All-Around Solid Paint-bred title,
Having finished second last year to
the Italians, this year the German
team claimed the Nations Cup award.
Left: Docs J Jetadeebrand, owned by
George Maschalani of Germany, was
the All-Around Open winner, earning
titles in shows 1, 2 and 5.
along with four gold medals, one silver
and one bronze.
The pair were named European
Champions in Amateur SPB halter
geldings, Amateur SPB Western pleasure,
Amateur SPB hunter under saddle,
as well as SPB 3-year-old and
older geldings. They rounded out the
week with a Reserve Championship
in SPB Senior hunter under saddle
and a bronze medal in SPB Senior
Western pleasure.
Their success came as a true surprise
to Ulrike, who is from Bensheim,
Germany. She has owned
“Buddy”— her first Paint—for only a
year, and it has taken the pair quite a
while to come together. Ulrike came
to the Championships without a specific
goal in mind. Even when friends
encouraged her to enter barrel racing,
she thought it was just a chance to
earn some points, not realizing she
was in the lead. It wasn’t until they
called her number during the awards
ceremony that she learned they had
won.
“I was very lucky,” said Ulrike,
laughing, when asked about her win.

She described Buddy as complicated
and playful, a real handful.
With a background in English riding,
Ulrike did most of the training herself,
hauling Buddy once a month to
work with trainer George Maschalani.
Buddys Bourbon was bred by Uwe
Pauls of Schiffdorf Wehel, Germany.
While there was no formal highpoint
award for halter, there is no denying
that the team to beat was Exclusive
Paints, owned by Sabine Gresens.
Together with her partner Marko
Dumeier and trainer Michael Ochetto
of Henderson, Texas, the trio won six
European Championships and two reserves
in halter. In addition, RH Sierra
Impressive, Gresens’ stallion, was grand
champion under all five judges. Tributes
Decision and XP Cheerio Miss
Sofie, both belonging to Gresens, each
won Grand Champion Mare and Reserve
Champion Mare titles.
“We’re really pleased with the quality
of the horses at the show,” said
Dumeier. “You can see how hard people
are working to prepare their
horses.. The level of competition, the
number of horses is increasing, and
that’s exciting for all exhibitors.”
Team spirit
New this year was the Youth Team
Tournament in which every young
competitor was invited to compete.
Knowing that few countries had
enough Youth members coming to
form a team, young riders were encouraged
to make new friends and to
come up with a five- or six-member
multinational team.
Rather than trying to squeeze additional
classes into an already tight
schedule, points earned in regular
classes counted towards a team’s total.
Each team member had to compete
in one of six events: showmanship,
Western pleasure, hunter under saddle,
horsemanship, trail or reining.
Youth Coordinator Jasmin Spindler
made sure that every young person
entered was part of a team. She encouraged
the kids to get together, to
get to know each other and to come
up with a team name.
The excitement slowly built
throughout the week, and on the last
day, when the points were tallied, the
winning team was Lucky Rider. Earning
100 points—20 more than the
second-place team—were Kim
Blockus, Alena Helmke, Astrid Smith
and Maya Franke, all from Germany,
and Ella Brave of Sweden.
The girls had met earlier in the year
when they competed at the Youth
Team Tournament at the APHA World
Show in Fort Worth, Texas. They kept
in touch afterwards, met at shows in
Germany and Denmark, and made
plans to compete as a team in Aachen.
But perhaps the most anticipated
event of the week was the Nations
Cup, held during the final evening’s
performance. The atmosphere in the
Albert Vahle Hall was absolutely electric
as spectators and supporters, rooting
for their home team, waved flags
and cheered loudly as riders from
France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands
and Sweden paraded in during
the opening ceremonies.
Streamed live over the Internet to
the APHA Convention held in San
Antonio, Texas, the worldwide audience
was on the edge of their seats as
five horses and five riders from each
team competed in trail, Western pleasure,
horsemanship, hunter under
saddle and reining.
While Team Italy came prepared to
defend their 2005 title, a mistake in
the first class—trail—resulted in no
points, leaving the Cup up for grabs.
Having finishing second last year to
the Italians, the German team was set
to reclaim the award, and given the
German riders’ strength and depth, it
came as no surprise when they won
three of the five events and amassed
1,222 points, claiming the Cup and
gold medals. Earning 1,008 points,
The Netherlands took the silver, and
with 920 points, Team Sweden held
their ground, repeating their 2005
bronze medal win.
The 2006 Nations Cup champions
from Germany were Birgit Bayer, Juliane
Heino, Ulrike Mohr, Sarah
Posthoff and Brigitte Sommer-Heinze.
National pride
Perhaps the element that makes the European Championships unique
among all other Paint shows is the feeling of national pride that fills the air.
When an exhibitor wins, he wins certainly for himself, but also for his country.
During each awards ceremony, after the neck ribbons and medals are
presented, the champion’s national anthem is played. It is truly a touching
moment when you realize that despite the differences in language and culture,
the American Paint Horse brought all of these individuals together.
That, in itself, is sometimes worth more than gold.
The 2007 European Paint Horse Championship location and dates will
be announced in the Paint Horse Journal and on the Internet at ephc.info.
