New Age MessagesBear Ancient PrinciplesBy wah!The teachings of yoga are from ancient times.Reflecting knowledge from an age of GoldenEnlightenment, they carry jewels of wisdomthat draw the Self back to its complete innate nature.Civilizations have come and gone, but there are usuallytrace remains left behind. How to digest all this information?Even when presented with the rudiments of ancientknowledge, it can be difficult to actually use. Many ofthe teachings are written in code to preserve their integrity.For example, a teaching might say, “The moon roseover a thousand blossoms.” This by itself might not beusable. But with the added knowledge that the moon isthe left nostril (Ida) and the thousand petaled lotus isthe top of the head (Sahasara), one might practice leftnostril breathing and focus the eyes and attention onthe energy center at the top of the skull.Many of the yogic teachings are written in code. Aswell, most ayurvedic knowledge of medicine and curingdisease is written in poetic verse, for easy memorizationTHE JOURNEYJULY • AUGUST 2009– the American equivalent could be “an apple a daykeeps the doctor away.”The ayurvedic teachings, however, are also coded,with references to different plants and roots that only aknowledgeable practitioner could decipher.The ancient teachings have been preserved, eitherin whole or in part, and handed down to future generations.We are the recipients of these teachings and requirehelp in using and understanding them.Relevant PackagesEnter the linguists: they help us understand the languageand translation of the teachings. Enter the scholars:they help us grasp the symbolism used in ancientartifacts. Enter the scientists and mathematicians: theycalculate and recalculate theories and formulas to updateour knowledge of the cosmos. Enter the saints andsages: they carry the energy of God into our hearts.Enter the messengers – teachers and people like youand me: we carry the message of ancient wisdom inmodern packages. We are yoga teachers, health practitionersand massage therapists. We are filmmakers, promotersand business owners.We are taking small pieces of ancient wisdom andpackaging them for use and sale in the marketplace.This is the New Age business frontier.The marketing of ancient wisdom in pretty New Agepackages might seem at first like commercial or capitalisticgimmicks.
