Raising the Participation Age (RPA)New for 2013What it is and how it can help your son or daughter• RPA increases the minimum age young people can leave learning.• Young people completing Year 11 in 2013 must stay in learning untilthe end of the academic (school year) in which they turn 17.• RPA doesn’t mean they must stay in school. They can choose fromthe following:- a full-time course in school 6th form or college- work-based learning such as an apprenticeship or job withtraining. (Training has to be for at least 280 teaching hours a yearand leading to an Ofqual accredited qualification)- part-time education or training if they are employed, selfemployedor volunteering for more than 20 hours a weekDetails about all these options are in Get Organised and online atwww.workabout.org.uk - the website of C&K Careerswww.ucasprogress.com - courses and apprenticeships for 16-19s• RPA means they can’t take a job that doesn’t offer recognised andsubstantial training.• In fact, most young people in this area already choose to stay inlearning at 16-18. In 2011, 95.7% of leavers chose to stay in learning;gaining the skills and knowledge employers ask for and that will berequired by jobs in the future.• RPA begins from the last day of the summer term.
