2007 FOOTBALL PREVIEW2007 FOOTBALL PREVIEWThe 2006 edition of Western Michigan football exceeded the expectations of the collegefootball community. With every publication picking the Broncos to fi nish three or four gamesbelow their 2005 mark in the win column, WMU took heed and proved every one of themwrong.Western Michigan captured eight wins for only the fi fth time in program history, going a perfect5-0 at Waldo Stadium. The Broncos went to their fi rst bowl game in 18 years, third ever.WMU ended the regular season with the best overall record in the conference over the pasttwo years. The team led the nation in sacks per game and total interceptions. The programboasted its second Associated Press All-American in as many years. That list of accomplishments is very gratifying, but to the Western Michigan University footballteam and coaching staff, it is not satisfying. The Broncos did not win the Mid-AmericanConference Championship, nor did they capture the West Division. Western Michigan didnot win its bowl game, even though the team rallied from 24 points down to tie the score andhave an attempt to send the game into overtime in the fi nal minute of regulation. These are goals that were not attained by the WMU football program, but that is why thereare always winter workouts. There is always spring ball. There is always preseason campand there is, most defi nitely, always next season. The 2007 edition of Western Michigan football is hungry to continue to move the programforward. The student-athletes and coaches had eight wins a year ago and now they wantnine. They fi nished runner-up in the division and now they want the title. They experiencedpostseason and now they want to hoist the hardware. But in order to reap the rewards, theyhave to put in the work and it all begins now.Western Michigan began its preparation for the upcoming season with National SigningDay, Feb. 7, 2007, by signing 21 student-athletes to national letters of intent. Twenty ofthe newcomers are incoming freshmen, while the Broncos also welcome a junior collegetransfer into its corps of wide receivers. There are an equal number of juniors and sophomores on the roster with 26 in each class. The Broncos boast 14 seniors on this year’s squad with 10 of them entering their fi fth yearacademically. Seventeen members of last season’s incoming class were red-shirted in2006.to coach the defensive line. He went to UCF after serving as the defensive line coach atStanford from 2002-03.The fi nal addition to the coaching staff was quarterbacks coach Scott Kavanagh, who hadspent the past three seasons at Cornell under former Bronco assistant Jim Knowles. Kavanaghserved as the Big Red’s quarterbacks coach during the 2005 and 2006 campaigns.During that time, Cornell had a signal caller earn First Team All-Ivy League honors for thefi rst time in program history in 2005 and had another quarterback rush and throw for over1,000 yards in the same season.BRONCO QUARTERBACKS (6)No. Name Ht. Thomas Peregrin made those two starts, helping the Broncos toa pair of wins over Toledo and Virginia (on the road). This is Peregrin’s second season inthe WMU offensive system after transferring from Bakersfi eld Community College. He completed69.2 percent of his passes in fi ve games played, tossing three touchdowns versusno interceptions. Also returning is 2005 MAC Freshman of the Year Tim Hiller. Hiller is making his way backfrom a knee injury that occurred on the second offensive play of the 2005 fi nale. The Orrville,Ohio, native threw 20 TDs in his rookie campaign but has not seen live action sinceNov. 23, 2005. After these two quarterbacks, no other has seen signifi cant time on the fi eld.But Caleb Clark, Drew Burdi and Dennis Reedy are all vying for the position this upcomingseason.BRONCO WIDE RECEIVERS (12)12BRONCO COACHING STAFFWith success comes change and the Bronco coaching staff has experienced change duringthe off-season. Five coaches from last year’s staff are no longer with the program. Headcoach Bill Cubit was dilligent in determining who would fi ll the vacant positions. His fi rst hirewas Grant Heard as the Broncos’ new receivers coach.Heard was a member of the Ole Miss coaching staff where he assisted in coaching both thereceivers and tight ends, as well as breaking down game fi lm and assisting on the preparationof the upcoming game plan.Cubit then added his new defensive coordinator, offensive line coach and brought in anothercoach to take over defensive line duties as Tim Daoust transitioned to secondary duties.Bill Miller became the new defensive coordinator at Western Michigan this past springand he brings with him nearly 20 seasons of experience at the coordinator level. He hascoached at Arizona State, Florida and Michigan State. In three seasons at ASU, Miller tutored LB Dale Robinson, who would go on to be the PatTillman Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Pac-10 Conference, along with All-Pac-10performers S Zach Catanese, DT Jordan Hill and LB Jamar Williams.Bob Stanley joined the Bronco staff at the same time to take over coaching the offensiveline. Stanley, who was most recently at New Mexico, brings 37 years of experience to Kalamazoo.Prior to New Mexico, he spent the three previous years in the same capacity underBill Snyder at Kansas State.Peter McCarty also joined the WMU staff at the same time, coming from Central Florida,www.wmubroncos.comNo. Name Ht. There are actually12 members of the wide receiver corps but it is this pair that bring the most experience into2007. Simmons led all receivers with 668 yards on 61 receptions. He opened the seasonon a high note, seven catches for 99 yards at Indiana, and ended it with a pair of break outgames against major competition. Having toreplace a 1,000-yard back (Trovon Riley, 2005) is something not easily done, but, behind agreat offensive line, it did. Mark Bonds ran for 1,082 yards on 252 carries. He became onlythe 10th back to reach the millennium mark in program history.Bonds was not the only asset for the Bronco running attack. Brandon West burst onto thescene as WMU’s kick off return specialist. He ranked at or near the top-10 nationally everyweek in return average and had a break out day against Florida State, busting out returnsof 56 and 65 yards for the two most explosive returns of the season. He also served as acompliment to Bonds in the running game. He amassed 633 yards and three touchdownson 131 carries, eclipsing the century mark at Central Michigan and against Cincinnati in theInternational Bowl.Glenis Thompson, another bruising runner, entered the mix midway through the season andwill factor into the offensive scheme in 2007.give this position the depth it needs to provide an outlet for the passing game as well as, andat times more importantly, provide support to the offensive line in the running game.OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (17)No. Name Ht. The Fort Lauderdale,Fla., native tied his unit coach for the second-most touchdown receptions in a seasonwith six and amassed 423 yards on 37 catches to rank second on the team. 2007 FOOTBALL PREVIEW2007 FOOTBALL PREVIEWMoving directly to the other side of the ball, the defensive line is also returning nearly everystarter from a season ago. Nick Varcadipane and Cory Flom anchor the interior defensiveline as the duo combined to block six kicks for the Broncos in 2006. Flom set the seasonrecord with four and is now the career leader with fi ve swats.Zach Davidson cemented himself as a starter at defensive end, ending the year with 47tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks. He also forced three fumbles and recoveredtwo more. Opposite of Davidson is where the Broncos will look to replace a pair of seniors.Anthony Belmonte, whose senior season ended short due to injury, and Matt Ludeman (twointerceptions in the fi nal two games of the year) anchored the left defensive end positionfor most of the year. Western Michigan did receive support from the likes of Justin Braska,2006 freshman Mark Berghuis and converted linebacker Greg Marshall. The unit loses apair of seniors, including Ameer Ismail, the nation’s leader in sacks and tackles for loss in2006.Maybe one of the Broncos’ most heralded units coming into the 2007 season is the secondary. The group, made up of seven cornerbacks and nine safeties, boasts a returning FirstTeam All-MAC selection in Londen Fryar and all of its starting components.E.J. Biggers, Louis Delmas and C.J. Wilson terrifi ed passing offenses a season ago. Thegroup led the nation in interceptions with 24. Fryar led the conference with fi ve, Biggers andDelmas each picked off four and Wilson pilfered three passes of his own.The Broncos are coming off a season where they also led the country in sacks per game with3.54. Even more impressive is the fact that Western Michigan’s defense broke a conferencerecord that had stood since 1973. The 76.1 yards per game rushing allowed is the lowestaverage ever in the MAC in one season, eclipsing Miami’s mark of 77.0 ypg.Not only did the Bronco secondary stop the opposition’s offense, they created their own.Four interceptions were returned for touchdowns last season, three of which were returnedby members of the defensive backfi eld. Fryar tip-toed down the sideline 92 yards for a scoreagainst Toledo, Wilson scampered 66 yards to the end zone at Ohio and Desman Stephenwas the difference in a 17-10 win at Virginia with a 34-yard scoring return.Senior Anthony Gebhart served as a back up safety a year ago and added a spark whenneeded. His season highlight came against the Cavaliers when he had nine tackles andtipped the pass intercepted by Stephen.
