Town of Arlington
Department of Public Works
51 Grove Street
Arlington, MA 02476
Dear Resident,
Arlington is pleased to announce the start of
unlimited weekly recycling and yard waste
(in season) starting on July 2. For years,
weekly recycling has been one of the top
service requests residents have made to
Town Hall. The new service upgrades are made possible by
enforcing current recycling laws and limiting trash removal to
100 gallons per week, per household, which is approximately
three, 32 gallon trash barrels.
The Town is able to offer weekly recycling collection through
our new solid waste collection contractor, JRM Hauling
and Recycling. You may start seeing JRM collection trucks
around Town as they prepare to start service to Arlington.
We anticipate the new recycling and trash guidelines implemented
with this contract will bring the Town closer in line
with the Massachusetts 2010-2020 Solid Waste Master Plan,
by increasing waste diversion into the recyclable material
streams and improving compliance with state regulations that
ban certain types of waste from incineration or landfills. We
hope residents benefit from the new weekly recycling and
yard waste collection service.
Please be sure to read the complete program details inside
for changes to recycling and trash collection.
2012-2013 Recycling and Trash Guide for Residents
This guide provides information you will need to properly
dispose of many types of waste, making the most of Arlington’s
numerous recycling and disposal options. For options
not mentioned in this guide, please visit
www.arlingtonma.gov/recycle or call 781-316-3108.
What’s New?
Starting July 2nd, weekly
collection of recycling and
yard waste (in season) begins.
Make sure your recycling
accompanies your trash
at the curb and your total
trash does not exceed 100 gallons (approximately
three, 32-gallon trash barrels), per household. Do not
remove recycling bins until trash has been collected.
That’s it.
Starting in September, trash will not be collected if
there is no recycling accompanying it, or any trash
that exceeds the 100 gallon limit. A sticker will be adhered
to your trash explaining why it was not collected.
Households may contact JRM directly to pay for a
paid pick-up of excess trash or they should return it to
their property for collection the following week.
Starting in October, households that leave trash,
barrels, recycling containers, or yard waste on the
curb later than 9 PM the day after their scheduled collection
date will be subject to a fine. In cases when a
household predicts they will have excess trash due to
a significant clean out, JRM can be contacted directly
for a paid pick-up. The charge is $10 per five 32-gallon
barrels ($10 minimum).
Additional Rules and Regulations
Residential trash and recycling should be placed at the
curb no sooner than 6 PM on the day prior to your collection
day and no later than 7 AM on the scheduled pick
up day. Plastic rubbish bags (3-ply minimum) are acceptable.
Cardboard boxes are not an acceptable container for
trash. Cardboard boxes can be used for recycling paper
or cardboard, but will be taken as recycling. Yard waste
should be in labeled barrels or in paper yard waste bags.
No container or bundle for collection should exceed 50 lbs.
Acceptable Wastes: Shall mean all trash which can be
placed into acceptable containers, excluding any materials
covered by the Massachusetts DEP Waste Bans, and/or
inherently dangerous, toxic, or hazardous wastes regulated
by State and Federal authorities. Waste ban items
include: construction and demolition debris, auto parts,
stumps (regardless of size), dirt, rock, concrete, biological
waste, ammunitions, and explosives. You can view a full
list at: www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/solid/wastebans.htm
Other Disposal/Recycling Options
Bulk Trash Items: One bulk item is accepted with curbside
collection per household, per week. Bulk items
include toilets, sinks, mattresses/box springs (one set
counts as one bulk item), furniture, microwaves, rugs (cut,
rolled, and tied to 3’ or less), and car tires (no rims, only 2
per week).
TV/Computer Monitors (CRTs) Disposal Options: Bring
your CRT/TV to the DPW Office and purchase a sticker
for proper disposal ($10 per unit). You must be able to lift/
transfer unit in order to use this option. For curbside collection,
call DPW to schedule a collection ($40 per unit) or
call DPW 48 hours prior to one of two Town-wide collections
on 11/17/12 or 5/11/13 ($20 per unit).
Electronic Waste (e-waste): Many small e-waste items
such as cell phones, DVD players, small appliances, hard
drives, radios, and toasters can be dropped off at the DPW
Offices during business hours for free, except CRTs ($10)
and laptops ($5). Call ahead or view the full list of acceptable
items online at: www.arlingtonma.gov/recycle
Appliances (whitegoods): Appliances such as a washer,
dryer, dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, air conditioner, hot
water heater, and dehumidifier are collected and recycled
for $20 per unit. Call JRM to schedule a pick-up. Microwaves
are considered a bulk trash item.
Mercury: Mercury items such as thermometers, thermostats,
and button cell batteries may be brought to DPW for
recycling. CFL light bulbs are NOT accepted and should
be brought to either of Arlington’s Hardware stores.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): HHW is collected
eight times per year in Lexington (see calendar p.3 for
dates). A complete list of acceptable items can be found
online at: lexingtonma.gov/dpw/hhhwfacility.cfm Oil-based
paints are disposed of at these collections. Latex paint
should be completely dried and disposed of in regular
trash.
Medication Disposal: Starting June 15, 2012 unused/
unwanted medications can be dropped off for proper
disposal 24 hours a day in a new medication disposal drop
box at the Community Safety Building, 112 Mystic Street.
Whenever possible, medications should be dropped off in
their original containers, with the name of the medication
clearly visible. Bottles containing liquid medications should
be placed in plastic bags (available on site). No sharps/
needles will be collected. A sharps disposal drop box in
Town is scheduled to open by the end of 2012. Check arlingtonma.gov/health
for updates or call the Health Department
at 781-316-3170.
Composting: Compost Bins are available for purchase by
contacting the DPW Office.
