The popularity of American v-twin motorcycles goesback a lot of years, and S&S has been providing highperformance parts for v-twins for almost fifty ofthem. Now S&S is introducing a line of performanceproducts for a relatively new v-twin, the VictoryFreedom engine. Even though the Victory engineemploys slightly different technology than ourprevious products, our near half century ofexperience in the field of high performance fourcycle engines made it easy for us to apply our timehonored formula of "more cubic inches = morepower" without any difficulty. An additional factorthat made this project go smoothly was thecooperation between S&S and the Victory team atPolaris Industries.S&S company founders George and Marjory Smith showdrag racing trophies won during the summer of 1952.S&S ® <strong>Performance</strong> <strong>Parts</strong> For Victory ®Available Exclusively Through Victory ® DealersThe new S&S performance kits for Victory motorcycles areavailable only through authorized Victory dealers. One of thebiggest factors in our decision to sell them exclusively throughVictory dealers, was our desire for complete customersatisfaction. Factory trained Victory technicians equipped withall the required tools, are in the best position to install and setup our kits and to service them afterward. S&S strokers were first introduced in 1961, and have long been acceptedas one of the most cost effective and easily installed high performanceupgrades in the industry. Strokers have changed a lot since the dayswhen JFK was President, and Elvis was too shocking to televise from thewaist down. The level of sophistication and technology in S&S stroker kitsof today is, by necessity, much higher than it was in 1961. Gone are thedays when all you needed was a hand full of jets and a screwdriver to dialin your carburetor to satisfy your stroker engine's need for more fuel.Carburetor? What carburetor? The difficulty of tuning electronic fuelinjection alone, has made it vitally important that we follow S&Scompany founder, George Smith senior's vision of providing completekits. Kits that include everything needed to build a stroker engine, andjust as importantly to make it perform to its full potential. That's whythese strokers for Victory motorcycles are offered as part of an S&S HotSet Up Kit which contains everything needed for the installation –including fuel injection calibration.George Smith Sr. machines S&S stroker flywheels in the early 1960's.S&S ® Stroker Hot Set Up Kit ® For Victory ® Freedom EnginesEconomical and Powerful!The new S&S stroker Hot Set Up Kits for Victory Freedom enginesare available for 2003 and later Victory motorcycles equipped with92" or 100" Victory Freedom engines. Unfortunately no kits areavailable for earlier Victory engines.What makes an S&S stroker Hot Set Up Kit so economical is the factthat it is designed to make use of the majority of the stock enginecomponents. Crankcases, cylinder heads, fuel system, etc are allreused. Cylinders and pistons in factory 100" engines or any 92"engine which has been upgraded with a Victory 100" big borecylinder kit, can be used almost "as is" with the S&S stroker kit. AVictory 100" cylinder and piston kit is required to install the S&S106" stroker kit in an existing 92"engine.2INSTALLATIONInstallation of an S&S stroker Hot Set Up Kit is no more difficultthan rebuilding a stock engine. All S&S parts are designed to boltinto the stock crankcase with no machining or modificationsrequired. There are only a few minor clearancing operations thatmust be performed. The skirt of the stock rear piston and therocker arm support must be clearanced to accommodate theincreased piston travel and valve spring diameter. Theseoperations can be done in minutes with nothing more than a handfile or grinder.


Dyno ResultsFrom S&S CycleThis dyno chart shows the increase in powerand torque that the S&S 106" stroker Hot SetUp Kit delivers over a stock 92" [or 100"]engine. The 106" test engine was equippedwith Victory Stage I mufflers.Dyno results from Dyno Jet ® 200 Chassisdynamometer at S&S Cycle's Research andDevelopment facility in Viola, Wisconsin.WHAT'S IN AN S&S ® STROKER HOT SET UP KIT ® ?STROKER CRANKSHAFTThe heart of any S&S stroker kit is a stroker crankshaft. As the nameimplies, the stroker crankshaft increases the stroke of the engine.The longer stroke makes the piston travel farther in the cylinder,increasing the engine's displacement. That means that the pistonsdraw in more air and fuel on each intake stroke. It just makes sensethat if you can burn more fuel, you can make more power, but there'smore to it than that. Stroker cranks differ from stock cranks in thatthe crank journal, that the rods ride on, is farther from the center ofthe crankshaft. The added distance from the center of the crankshaft gives the pistons and connecting rods more leverage to turn thecrank. That's why an engine with a longer stroke will generally havemore torque than a short stroke motor of equal displacement. TheS&S crank for the 106" stroker is machined from a 4140 steel forging,and increases the stroke of the engine from 102mm to 108mm. Tocomplete the crankshaft assembly, the kit includes S&S 4340 forgedsteel connecting rods. S&S stroker crankshafts are available formodels with roller cam chain (2003-’05 except Hammer and touringcruiser) and for models with the silent cam chain (2005 Hammer ® andall 2006 models). Hot Set Up Kits are not available for touring cruiser.VALVE TRAINTo make the most of the increased displacement of the 106" S&Sstroker engine, S&S includes a set of special S&S .495" lift cam shaftsand a set of S&S high lift valve springs with top collars and valvekeepers. The increased lift and optimized timing of the camsincreases the amount of air the engine can draw in and allows theengine to get rid of exhaust gasses more efficiently. The valve springsaccommodate the increased lift of the cams and assure accurate valvetrain operation at high rpm.INTAKEThe S&S stroker Hot Set Up Kit includes a greatlooking polished billet aluminum air cleaner assemblywith a high flow air filter. By making more airavailable to the engine, the S&S air cleaner is animportant component in the performance of the HotSet Up Kit. This air cleaner is also available separatelyto increase the performance of stock displacementVictory engines. See page 5 for more information.FUEL INJECTION CALIBRATION FILEThe stock Victory fuel injection system can easilyaccommodate the fuel delivery needs of the S&S106" stroker, it has plenty of capacity. It just needsto be tuned to provide the correct amount of fuel totake advantage of the cams, exhaust, and theincreased displacement. An authorization code isincluded with each kit, which allows your Victorytechnician to load an S&S calibration file into thememory of the stock fuel injection module. It isimportant to note that the calibration files availableare customized for use with the parts included withthe stroker kit and the with the recommendedexhaust system. If other components are used,decreased performance and possible enginedamage may result.3


Hold On...To Your Horses!When we significantly increase the horsepowerand torque of an engine, there are alwaysconcerns about whether the stock clutch canhandle the additional load. We have found thatthe stock clutch in 100" models such as theHammer ® , is more than adequate to handle theadditional power of the S&S ® 106" stroker kit. Itis recommended that the heavier clutch springfrom these models be installed when upgrading92" engines to 106". The lower set of curves representstock configuration, and the upper curves showthe gains with the S&S high flow air cleaner andVictory Stage I mufflers. Note that the curves arealmost identical until about 3000 rpm. At thatpoint the engine needs more air than the stockair cleaner can provide. The S&S air cleanerprovides the extra air so the engine can makemore power.Dyno results from Dyno Jet ® 200 Chassisdynamometer at S&S Cycle's Research andDevelopment facility in Viola, Wisconsin.S&S ® HIGH FLOW AIR CLEANER KITSNot ready for a Stroker Kit?But want to go faster?If your budget won't handle a stroker kit right now, butyou still want to go faster, may we suggest an S&S aircleaner assembly? Here's an opportunity to pick up somemore power without breaking the bank, and look gooddoing it. An S&S polished billet aluminum air cleanerassembly with low restriction S&S air filter allows theengine to breath better and produce more power. Tomake the most of the increased air flow of the S&S aircleaner assembly, we also recommend a set of VictoryStage I mufflers. Refer to the dyno chart to see the powergains to be had from this simple installation.Of course any time you want to make more power, you canfigure on using more fuel. Making power is one thing S&S Cycle is good at. We’ve been doingit for over 50 Years now. But once you have the power, you haveto be able get it to the ground, and that is something we have justgotten involved with in the last few years. Although this is the first effortinto clutch upgrades for the Victory line of motorcycles, we are drawing onour experience in the development of our high performance clutches forlate model Harley-Davidson® big twins and the experience we have gainedfrom our NHRA Pro Stock racing to come up with a cost effective and well…just plain effective solution for the problem of too much power.The new variable pressure clutch plate uses a series of centrifugal weightsaround the outer rim of the pressure plate to put additional pressure onthe clutch pack as the rpm increases. <strong>High</strong> performance engines typicallymake the most torque and horsepower in the higher rpm range, and thatis just where the variable pressure clutch plate comes through with someextra squeeze!Now Available From S&S ® …Variable Pressure Clutch Plate For Victory® Motorcycles!The new S&S® Variable Pressure Clutch Plate uses centrifugal weights to increase the clamping force on the clutch packat high rpm. This photo shows a modified clutch hub with the steel adapter installed. Easy actuation at idle, but highperformance hook-up when it counts!Like all S&S products the variable pressure clutch plate has been thoroughlytested (aka abused) to make sure it will stand up to the worst that the real world has to offer. In addition to the usual dyno testing and street riding, the final test came at thedrag strip, when repeated ¼ mile passes were made on a Victory® Vegas® equipped with a 114” prototype engine kit.With our test riders on the throttle, this was anything but a milk run, and that is where we discovered that the stock clutch hub could not take the extra stress. So in additionto the variable pressure plate we decided to add a clutch hub modification to the package. Stock clutch hubs will be modified, on an individual basis, to install a billet steelinner hub adaptor. That means that you send your clutch hub to S&S, and you will get your own modified hub back. Call your S&S® Customer Support Representative.The new S&S pressure plate fits all 2003 and later Victory bikes equipped with a Freedom® engine regardless of model. It is designed to be used with the stock Victory clutchplates and the stock (green) clutch spring for an easy clutch pull at idle. New 114” and 107” Top-End Kits For 2003-Up Victory® Freedom® EnginesS&S® Introduces two new 41⁄8” bore top-end kits for Victory Freedom engines.Depending on the displacement of the original engine, these kits will result in eithera 107” or a 114” engine. Engines with stock 92” or 100” displacement will yield 107”with the stock 102mm stroke crankshaft. Stock 106” engines, or engines with anS&S 106” stroker kit have a 108mm stroke crankshaft, and will end up at 114” whenthe big bore kit is installed.Proven <strong>Performance</strong> ® !Needless to say any part S&S sells has to live up to our reputation, and we can proveit. CONTINUED–New 114” and 107” Top-End Kits For 2003-Up Victory® Freedom® EnginesCylinders Must Be ModifiedS&S® will modify stock cylinders on an individual bases In order to get a 41⁄8” borerequired for these engines. That means you send your stock cylinders to S&S, and youwill get your own cylinders back, modified and fit to S&S pistons. The modificationsinclude a boring operation and the installation of S&S 41⁄8” bore cast iron liners.These cylinders will be fit to the appropriate pistons for the stroke of the existingengine. In addition each kit will come with a calibration download card.Before the cylinders are modified, a spec/build sheet must be filled out to ensurethat we have all the information we need to perform the work and get the correctparts.What Else Is Needed?The engine builder will need to provide base gaskets and alignment dowels, toassemble the engine. In addition it should be noted that the calibration file for thiskit was developed for use with the S&S 495 cams and valve springs, an S&S billetair cleaner, and Victory Stage I <strong>Performance</strong> Slip-On mufflers. The S&S cams and aircleaner are not included with the kit because we know that many customers alreadyhave these parts in their engines, so they can use the parts they already have.Another thing that will be needed is a stronger clutch. We highly recommend theS&S variable pressure plate clutch conversion. S&S® 495 Cams Now Available For 2009 Model Victory® Freedom® EnginesS&S 495 cams and springs for Victory® Freedom® engines have been available forseveral years now, and have been included in the S&S 106” stroker Hot Set Up Kit®for Victory. They are also recommended for the new 107” and 114” big bore kitsshown in this brochure.A new cam kit is now available for 2009 model engines that includes cam carriers.The S&S cams are not compatible with the 2009 cam carriers so in order to installthese cams in the new bikes it is necessary to retro-fit the engine with early stylecarriers. In addition, some extra parts will need to be purchased and used in theinstallation. See the chart below.In order to install the S&S 495 cams in any Victory Freedom engine high lift springsneed to be installed.
