Why Learn AnotherLanguage?• Globalization has created the necessityfor us to be able to communicate withpeople around the world.• Spanish and Mandarin lead other worldlanguages by a wide margin for usage inthe Western World.


Why A Second Language?• We must prepare our students to becompetitive when they graduate.• ATMs already offer instructions inmultiple languages, the Yellow Pages inmost cities have added inserts in otherlanguages besides English , and manyworld languages have worked their wayinto everyday use not only here, but alsoin many parts of the world.


Daily Language ProgramSpecifics…• Spanish language opportunities everyday for every child• K-Grade 2- Language lessons frominstructor and follow-up streamingvideos• Grade 3-5- Instructional streamingvideos and follow up lessons frominstructor


Why Global Studies?• Studying about the world enables students tounderstand who they are and where they livein relation to other people and places aroundthe globe.• Building an understanding of other people,other cultures, and other languages fostersrespect for each other.• A deeper understanding of the world createsopportunities and interests for students toexplore as they complete their education anddecide what career path to follow.


Global Studies ProgramSpecifics…• Each grade level focuses on a specificcontinent.• During each year, students will be responsiblefor learning about the people, culture, music,art, food, geography, and architecture ofcountries within their grade level’s continent.• By the time students complete fifth grade,they will have a complex understanding ofthemselves and of the people and placesaround the world.


Global Studies ProgramSpecifics…• Required Instructional Points• How large is your continent in relation to the other continents? (Largest, third largest, smallest… in termsof population and land mass?) What is the population of your continent? What bodies of water surround orborder your continent?• Choose a country within your continent along with your class and help your students to be able to do thefollowing…– Make a flag of your country and display it somewhere in your room or hallway– Explore the emblem of your country and learn about its meaning– Know the capitol of your country and find the capitol and country on a world map.– Know the name of the official language(s) of your country and be able to say “hello” in one or morelanguages from your country– Know how many people live within your country’s borders– Explore and be able to name the currency of your country and be able to tell someone the value ofyour currency compared to the US dollar (Is it worth more or less than our dollar?)– Know three interesting or historical facts about your country– Describe the climate of your country– Describe some of the sports people in your country enjoy as well as some of the customs people inyour country practice– Describe what people in your country eat and drink. (Help students taste a few of these items ifpossible.)– Draw the outline of your country and locate and label major geographical features of your country(Mountains, lakes, major rivers, etc…?)
