It is a time whenhunters can participate in one oftheir favorite sports and also enjoythe fall beauty of the MountainState,” said Curtis Taylor, Chief ofthe Division of Natural ResourcesWildlife Resources Section.Squirrel – The season runs fromSept. 10, 2011 through Jan. 31,2012. It is expected that hunterswill enjoy this earlier openingdate and may take the opportunityto introduce a novice hunter to thejoys of squirrel hunting. Hard mastproduction was excellent across theentire state last year which shouldproduce a bumper crop of “bushytails”this fall. The daily bag limitfor squirrels is six.Ruffed Grouse – The ruffed grouseseason opens Oct. 15, 2011 andcloses Feb 29, 2012. Statewidebrood reports for ruffed grouse arehigher this year than the last twoyears and average chick countsare also higher, indicating a betterrecruitment year. Grouse huntersshould look for areas that provideample cover and soft mast speciessuch as grape, hawthorn, dogwoodand greenbrier. The daily bag limitfor grouse is four.Raccoon – Hunting season for raccoonsopens Oct. 15, 2011 andcontinues through Feb. 29, 2012.With the abundant mast crop fromlast year, reproduction should havecontinue to the next pageSt. Croix RodsWave Worms Yo-Zuri• SliderSmallie BeaversVenom Venom • Cabin CreekSenko -• KinamiGarrett Jones Magnum Musky Baits TubesSpro Crane Crankbaits Musky Baits & More!Zoom - YumQuantum - OkumaBoogerman - BanditsCatch 'Em SpinnerbaitsOwner - GamakatsuRods & ReelsCustom PlasticsJigs & TrailersDipping DyeDo-It MoldsSplash-itsSnacks & BeveragesBrowning Rods & Reels

a very successful year. The dailybag limit is four.Rabbit and other small game– Opening day of cottontail rabbitseason is Nov. 5, 2011 and continuesthrough Feb. 29, 2012. Withthe wet spring and early summerrains, herbaceous growth was excellent, providing good food andcover for rabbits. With good earlyreproductive success, fall numbersshould be similar or better than lastyear. Old fields and brushy pasturesare the best habitat types inwhich to hunt rabbits. Snowshoehare, bobwhite quail, bobcat, redfox and gray fox seasons also openon Nov. 5, 2011. Hunters shouldbe aware of daily bag limits andseason possession limits for eachspecies before taking to the field.Trapping – Nov. 5, 2011 marks theopening of trapping season for furbearinganimals in West Virginia.Almost all species benefitted fromthe abundant mast crop last year, including many of West Virginiafurbearers such as bobcat, fox, coyote, mink and raccoon. Mast andincreased numbers of prey speciesthat rely on mast translated into anexcellent food supply for furbearers.Trappers are reminded thatseason closing dates vary for thevarious species. For more complete information onseason dates and bag limits, consultthe 2011-2012 Hunting and TrappingRegulations available at allhunting and fishing license agents,DNR District Offices and the DNRwebsite (www.wvdnr.gov).Advertse In TheW. Warbles InSquirrels - TheyAre Safe To EatWarbles appear usually as a baldlump or swollen area on and underthe hide of a squirrel. The warble isactually the larva of the botfly orwarblefly. The swollen lump increasesin size as the warble growsunder the hide.Botflies, of which there are severaltypes, nitially deposit their eggson vegetation used bysquirrels. Itis doubtful these eggs are ever laiddirectly on the squirrel’s fur. Thelarvae hatch from the eggs in responseto a quick temperature rise, which occurs when a squirrel pausesover the eggs. The larvae thenenter the squirrel through its noseor mouth and migrate to a site underthe skin, where they starttodevelop. They eventually becomelarge, usually dark-colored grubsan inch or so long and one-halfto three-quarters of an inch wide.As each warblestarts developmentunder the skin, it cuts an airholethrough to the outside. It eventuallywill emerge from this hole, dropThe WV Waterfestival winnerswere Bert Lane and Paul Alford. They landed 9 1/2 pounds of bass.Photo courtesy of PC Bait & Tackle inHinton.SEARSEXXONOver 47 YearsIn Businessto the ground, and pupate until theadult fly emerges to reproduce.Warbles are most prevalent onsquirrels in Ohio from Septemberthrough early October. than fox squirrels, primarily becausethe gray squirrel’s habitat ofdense woods is also good botflyhabitat.Botflies do best in the temperaturerange of the southeastern UnitedStates; their northern-most rangereaches into Ohio. Warbles aremuch more common in states suchas North Carolina and Alabama. Many other small rodents such aswhite-footed mice and chipmunksalso get these warbles.Warbles seem to have little effecton the overall health of a squirrel.Squirrels can have as many as fouror five warbles at one time. Theyare usually located on the front halfof the squirrel’s body – on the back, around the neck, or on the frontlegs.Squirrels with warbles are frequentlyshot by hunters. Thesesquirrels are fine to eat but somepeoplefind the sight of the warbleoffensive and unnecessarily discardthe squirrels. The skinned carcass of a warbledsquirrel may show a lesion or callusedarea on the meat, althoughduring the early stage of warbledevelopment there may be no scarat all. The scar can be trimmed offand the squirrel can be cookedlike any other squirrel.Information supplied by the OhioDNR.Feel safe now? iologists, WVU research scientists, stream restoration expertsfrom Canaan Valley Institute, andrailroad construction specialistsfrom TrakSpec Railroad Corporation, based in Hurricane, W.Va.Because the project site is locatedon a remote section of railroad, allconstruction material such as logsand rocks and heavy equipmenthad to be transported to the siteby rail. TrakSpec’s expertise andequipment was critical. In the end, the team built a new,fish-friendly section of stream anda sophisticated complex of culverts, the centerpiece of which is a partially-buried10-foot culvert containinga simulated stream channel. The project also doubled the floodcapacity of the Beaver Creek culverts.Midway through the project, amajor design change was requiredto meet a mandatory constructiondeadline and to provide a designthat could be more readily used foradditional streams.“The most impressive thing forme was the way the team pivoted toan entirely new design and pulledtogether to build such a high-qualityproject,” DNR Program ManagerSteve Brown said. He added,“Major thanks go to the guys atCONTECH Construction Productswho located a 10-foot culvert forus in a matter of hours and had iton site in three days. I also wantto thank State Rail Director CindyButler and the State Rail Authority, which owns the rail, for their helpthroughout the effort.”Looking to the future, DirectorJezioro observed that the project isa good model for future transportationculvert replacements becauseit complies with all current andproposed Corps of Engineers requirementsfor fish passage throughculverts.ATV’sMotorcyclesRt. 33 EastBuckhannon, WV304-472-4824www.supersmittys.comwww.wvasportsman.netBack Issues From 2006Online For FREEChad Lancaster won a trip to Africa and took 4 animals. Squirrel HuntingSquirrel hunting brings a greatsource of pleasure to some peopleand a look of disgust from others. They wonder how anyone couldshoot such an adorable little creature.Did you know that the squirrel belongsto the rodent family? In otherwords, it little more than a furry rat.Sounds yummy, doesn’t it?But people react differently tosquirrels than they do rats. Doesthat furry tail really make such adifference? You bet it does! I’venever seen children throwing nutsto a rat. There are four types of squirrels, the black squirrel, brown squirrel, red squirrel, and white squirrel.Other than color and a slight variancein size, there is little differencebetween them. But while squirrelsdon’t differ much in different partsof the country, the rules for huntingthem do. Be sure to check withyour local government to learn therules and get a permit. If you live in the city, you mightthink that finding a squirrel is aseasy as looking in the trees. But squirrelhunting is illegal in most cities, sothat’s out.City squirrels have grown uparound people and have learnedto co-exist. It’s not uncommon forsquirrels to take a nut right out ofsomeone’s hand. Rural squirrels,on the other hand, rarely see peopleand, like any other wild animals, remain a bit cautious. Some squirrel hunters like tomove through the woods huntingtheir prey. Others prefer to find acomfortable spot to sit and waitfor their prey to come to them. Lookfor nut trees, such as walnut, oak,or hickories. Empty shells on theground under the tree indicate thatsquirrels have most likely beenfeeding there and, unless the treeis bare, they will probably be back. It’s a good place to start. When youspot your prey, sometimes you justhave to outsmart it. You can be surethat if you are moving and spot asquirrel, he spotted you first. Just be carefulnot to shoot each other. If you are hunting alone, try tossinga stone or stick to the oppositeside of the tree. Believing that youhave followed him to that side, hemay come around to your side. The best weapon to hunt squirrelsdepends on the time of year. In earlyfall, while the leaves are still onthe trees, it’s more difficult to get aclear shot, so a shotgun is usuallypreferred. However, the spray ofthe pellets leaves greater potentialto contaminate the meat. For this reason, once the leaveshave fallen, or if they just like thechallenge, some hunters prefer usinga rifle. Squirrels are small anddon’t give you much of a target, butif you have a steady hand, a rifle allowsfor a cleaner and surer kill.Whichever gun you use, keep inmind that the squirrel’s vital organsare contained in the upper body andhead, so you should always aim forthis area. This could mean the differencebetween a clean kill andSept. 2011~ Page 28a wounded animal. The last thingany reputable hunter wants is toleave an animal wounded for otheranimals to prey upon.Once you’ve made the kill, findyour prey as soon as possible andenclose it in a plastic bag. The scentof a dead squirrel may frighten theother squirrels away, but is sure toinvite some unwanted predators.Kenneth Lake, from Romney, caught a 9 pound, 12 oz. channel cat.

Creating A MockScrape For HuntingCreating mock scrapes is a tacticthat is highly under-stated andunder-used in the majority of thehunting community. Although thistends to work best during pre-rutsituations, it can provide resultsright through the rut as bucks travelin search of receptive does andwork scrapes along the way.Scrapes vs. RubsThe first consideration is ofcourse whether or not your huntingarea holds any sizable bucksto begin w ith.By sizable we don’tmean large antlers. Simply put wemean anything you would shootthat meets your own standards accordingto your own personal codeof ethics. For some a forkhorn is atrue trophy. For others nothing lessthan a record book is suitable. Youhunt according to your ability andthe deer in your hunting area harvestingthose which you considersizable or suitable for shooting.Scrapes will work on all deerbut predominantly work better onlarger class older deer that havelaid claim to one particular area. Ascrape is considered a calling cardmuch like a rub on a tree but is abit more in-depth once you take acloser look. When a buck worksthe ground he is leaving a visualsign that he considers this area his, much like a rub. For one itis seldom that rub will be workedagain later in the year. A certaintree may be rubbed in consecutiveyears but seldom is it ever workedagain during that same year. Not sowhen speaking in terms of scrapes.Although not all scrapes are reworked,a percentage of them arevisited throughout the season andfreshened when needed. You willalso find a licking branch above ascrape where the deer has chewedthe end of a small branch andworked his pre-orbital glands aswell as the glands found around histear ducts to leave an added scent. This is where scrapes and rubs differthe most besides the fact of revisitationon occasion.Finding A ScrapeScouting and finding a scrapeor scrape line is a definite plus. pent up aggression due to growingtestosterone in the buck while thescrapes are a definite sign that abuck likes what he has seen in thearea. Scrapes are normally found onhigher ground that is dry enough tohold scent and wont be washed outin the even it rains heavily. Areasthat repeatedly encounter boggy orswamp-like conditions hold lessscrapes than the edges of that samearea where the ground is slightlyelevated. Any edge of a field, especiallythose that contain row cropsor food plots are high percentageareas to find scrapes. Main trailsentering swamps are also likelyplaces for a scrape or scrape-line.But is finding a scrape a call to setup your equipment and start hunting? Not exactly. The percentage ofscrapes that actually get re-workedis low in most places but there are afew tactics for increasing the oddsand finding out just what scrapesare still active.ActivityOne method for revealing an activescrape is to cover it with leavesand re-check it again in a few days. This is the most basic approach infinding out whether the buck is stillin the area and visiting his scrapesbut we’ll look at more indepthTYGART LAKEPOROPERTY464 Acres2 1/2 Miles WaterfrontCity Water TimberGreat LocationBarbour County$1,300,000304-457-1869CRISS SALES & SERVICE30 YaersExperience(304)472-1474HusqvarnaShindaiwa & MoreLawn & GardenSaws & TrimmersOLD WESTON ROADBUCKHANNON,WVGLADY FORK ARCHERYBowtech • Diamond • Hoyt • AlpineBowtuning - Custom Arrows – Accessoriestechniques in a moment. Tri - LakesRt. 19 WalkersvilleAmmoLive BaitGame CheckingFishing Suppliesto draw much attention visually, asa rub does. The secret to the scrapelies within the earth itself discernablemainly through scent. That’show you concentrate your effortswhen creating a mock scrape. The Mock ScrapeYou’ve found an active scrape buthunting the area has proved fruitless.Chances are that the buck ischecking them during hours ofdarkness. So how the heck do I lurethe buck out without alerting him? There are a number of ways totackle this situation. First you wantto make the buck believe that anotherbuck has taken over his area. You can do this by either workinghis active scrape or creating a mockscrape. Both can be perceived asthe same technique but when creatinga mock scrape you start fromscratch, just as the deer did. We’lldiscuss that first. To create a mock scrape you needto be very careful about leavingany human scent. Rubber boots andgloves are not an option. They are anecessity! Be sure there is a lickingbranch located roughly 40 inchesabove the area to be worked. Startout by working the ground with theheel of your boot to reveal somefresh dirt. Typically this would bedone is a somewhat circular or ovalpattern. This does not have to be ahole in the ground! Simply removingthe top layer of grasses or mosswill work fine. Because a buck urinatesin his scrape you will needsome scent. Code Blue provides awhitetail buck urine formula in botha liquid and a gel. I recommend theliquid formula for this application.Vigorously douse the fresh dirtyou opened up with the urine. Noneed to mix it in the dirt. Just let itsoak naturally as the buck would.Alternatively you can use a commercialproduct called PrimetimeMagic Scrape. This is advertised asweatherproof scent dispersing soil.Personally I have never used it butothers who have claim great resultswith less hassle.Next you need to work the lickingbranch. Just gnarl the end ofthe branch by twisting the limb inall directions until you can removea small portion. A manufacturerspreorbital gland scent can then beapplied to the end of the branchto complete the scenario. Somehunters prefer to use a drip bag orother means to ensure the scraperemains fresh with their scent butthat is a personal preference. I preferto create the scrape as describedthen walk away. Chances areyou might get a look at the buck ifhe’s actively patrolling the area.Drive ‘Em WildTo really set a buck into a frenzyyou have a number of options buthere’s my favorite. If you’ve doneany scouting throughout the yearchances are you have a few placesto set up and hunt from for variousweather conditions. Hopefullythose places also contain a highvolume of deer sign including somescrapes. If so, hers a extreme trickto really throw a dominant buckinto hyperdrive. Take two differentscrapes from different areas preferablya minimum of 1 mile apart ormore to avoid the possibility of usingthe same bucks scent from hishome-range.With your scent-free gear and ahand trowel or small shovel dig upthe dirt from the first scrape downto a depth of at least 6 inches andput it directly into a plastic bag. Asmall trash bag works well in mostcases. Return to your other huntingarea with the dirt you’ve just dugKOWAOptimed Spotting Scopesup and do the same. Pour the dirtfrom the first scrape into the secondscrape and pat down to a fairlyfirm consistency. Now re-visit thefirst scrape and fill in the hole withthe dirt from the other scrape in thesame manner. Because you shouldbe well out of any overlappinghome-range of either buck, theywill perceive this as an intrusion. This should bring at least one of thebucks back to actively begin workingthat scrape again. Keep in mindthat unless the 2 bucks are fairlyevenly matched, you will probablychase the smaller one away, whichin this extreme case, you want toknow which is the bigger or dominantbuck to begin with. Now in most cases this techniquewill work to some degree but notall. I have seen a spikehorn worka scrape that was made by a large6 point buck. In the same breath Ihave seen much larger bucks approachthe new scrape very tentatively.Given that information itshard to justify whether the buckpicks up small traces of the humanscent in the new scrape or he’s justUNCLE TOM’S LOANSBUY • SELL • TRADE • PAWNAchery SpecialistsMatthews • Parker • PSENew & Used GunsRt. 10 - Cook ParkwayOCEANA, WV304-682-5002GAME CHECKINGcautious for the fact that he’s notthe dominant buck in the area.
