Christian RetreatsA Relaxing RetreatMost of us have hectic lifestyles, but when can we honestly say that we have just taken the time to stopand think. Others may be more in need than some, but Aspire would like to suggest you make time fora weekend away from the stresses and strains of daily life. One of the myths surrounding retreats is that you have to be a particular type of person to go on one. Many people associate them with deeply religious people who have dedicated themselves to a life ofprayer. While this may be true of the minority, the reality is that retreats are also for everyone, whatevertheir belief and wherever they might be along life’s journey. The ideal place to get away from it all is at a retreat centre. Retreats are ideal for anyone fromany walk of life. They’re perfect for those looking for:• Some quiet time• A weekend to develop your interests• Time for reflection, away from family and work• To deepen your spiritualityThere are no restrictions on going on a retreat and you don’t need to be a churchgoer.Retreat centres come in a wide variety of sizes – from the privately owned house to the largeconference centre. Many are based in beautiful buildings with lovely gardens offering comfort andhome cooking. Those in the countryside may have access to fantastic walks and views, while those inthe city provide oases of peace in otherwise busy surroundings. The choice of retreat is surprisinglybroad – from individually guided and beginners’ retreats to creative retreats and those offering supportin a time of need. Each centre will have its own particular focus and programme of activities. Commonto all is a hospitality that welcomes the individual and ensures that every visitor has the best possibleopportunity to focus on their own journey for the length of their stay.Retreats vary in length, but are usually anything from a weekend to a week-long break. Depending onthe programme, some retreat centres welcome visitors for longer periods of time, some as long as amonth, whilst others offer shorter retreats, which are known as quiet days. Most retreat centres ask for donations from visitors to cover the costs as the majority don’t haveany other form of income. Your donation will cover the cost of maintaining the house, food andaccommodation and covering retreat leaders fees if on an organised retreat.Laggan Stables, Ballantrae:Quality self-catering cottage to two-star standardLaggan Stables is acottage on our 450-acre dairy farm. In fact, thenumber of weight-loss stomach operations (such as gastric bypass andstomach stapling) rose 12% in 2010/11 compared to the previous year;last year, there were 8,087 operations in England’s hospitals, comparedwith 7,214 in 2009/10.A good diet is central to overall good health, but keeping up themotivation can be hard. Chocolate, cakes and crisps tempt us every daybut by choosing to snack on fruit, yoghurt and nuts instead you canlose those excess pounds without even trying. Eating five portions offruit and vegetables a day can help keep you healthy as they’re low incalories, full of vitamins and minerals, plus they are a valuable source offibre and antioxidants. Your five-a-day will not only help you to maintaina healthy weight, it’s been proven that they help to reduce yourrisk of heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. In order to avoid becoming another obesity statistic, you need to movemore. Exercise is the miracle cure everyone prays for, but has neglectedto do. A sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity, so in other words, if you don’t exerciseyou dramatically increase your risk of dying from a heart attack. However, you don’t have to slog it out in a sweaty gym to get fit ormaintain your fitness levels.Throughout the year, but particularly during the summer months, it’simportant to look after the health of our skin. The best way to protectyourself from the sun’s harmful UVB and UVA rays is to wear sunscreen. For further info, visit www.sunsmart.org.ukAspire’s Top RecommendationASPIRE 11

Jas said: “Everything wesell has been researched, checked out and often tested by myself before it goes ontothe shelves. I’m passionate about helping people achieve their goals so I don’t believethat you can sell the same product to everyone, which is why we have such a widevariety of products. If you want to get lean, we know that you want a whey protein, whereas if you want to add bulk, you want a mass gainer with calories. I’ve been intofitness, health and training for most of my life, but got serious about five years ago,so I have a wealth of knowledge under my belt which I use to aid my customers. Ionly want the best for them; I don’t want to sell them the most expensive product inmy shop, I want to sell them the best product that is going to help them reach theirindividual goals.“It’s not just men that we cater for either. Over the last few years, women havebecoming increasingly conscious about eating clean and training for a toned body. There is no reason whatsoever that women cannot use any of the products we sell. There is no such thing as women’s-only protein; it’s just a marketing gimmick, likefad diets. The only way to achieve the body you want is to train hard, eat clean andtake the right supplements to assist your goals, aims and outcomes. I talk to everyonewho walks through our door, to find out what their goals are, what they want fromtheir workout and even what they want from their diet. I’m more than happy torecommend products at different prices in order to cater for every budget and, forno extra charge, I’m also happy to help plan workout programmes or even offernutritional advice, based solely on my many years of experience training and eatinghealthy.“I started Pegasus Fitness Factory because I am passionate about training. Istarted it for others who are passionate about training and want the best fromtheir workouts and their body. I know how people feel when going into shopsto buy what the shop’s sales people there are telling them to buy, withoutunderstanding what they want to do to simply just push sales. We couldn’t besituated in a better location; right next to a gym on Braunstone Gate. For me, it’snot about making money, it’s about helping an individual get to where they wantto be, which is why we stock such avast range of quality products. If Iwouldn’t use it myself, I do not stock itin my store. However, after two weeks of doing this routine four times a week I am starting tosee results. My clothes are looser and I’m feeling fitter. As well as doingthis routine, Jas also advised me to eat clean, so I have cut out processedfoods, Trans Fats and sugar, and I am aiming to drink two litres of watereach day. The survey found that nearly sixout of ten (57 per cent) of parents wouldsend their child to an independent school ifthey could afford to. Only 25 per cent wouldnot. This is the highest favourable responsein the survey’s history: in 2002, 48 per centsaid they would and 42 per cent said theywould not.Unprompted, better standards of educationremains the key reason parents would opt forthe independent sector (51 per cent). Sevenin ten of all adults agree that independent schools provide good university and employmentprospects for pupils, as well as giving them opportunities to fulfil their potential. The public strongly believe that independent schools have higher educational standardsthan state schools (59 per cent), with only six per cent believing they are lower and 23 percent saying they are about the same. The view that independent schools offer a higherstandard of education has been growing stronger over the past decade from 49 per centin 2002 to 59 per cent in 2012; by contrast, the proportion believing independent schoolstandards to be lower has hardly changed, falling from nine per cent in 2002 to six per centin 2012.Choosing the right establishment to educate your child can be a difficult decision. Manyschools may appear similar on paper, so find out when open days are occurring and makethe time to visit the schools personally. Look at how pupils interact with each other and howwell teachers seem to know the children. For more information on independent schools, please visit www.isc.co.ukLearning doesn’t just take place in the classroom. I find takingpart both stimulating and supportive. I have always loved art from an early age but have beenpainting more seriously for about fifteen years. I enjoy the medium of watercolour as I likethe way the colours flow together and produce interesting and dramatic effects. I try to paintatmosphere usually using the ‘wet into wet ‘ method.I was brought up in Scotland and many of my paintings are inspired by the Scottish scenery- Lochs, mountains, trees and sky. Rutland also offers wonderful opportunities to paintlandscapes and the view from where I live is a permanent inspiration.Email: joannafairley@googlemail.com | Phone: 01572 737889 | Mob: 07565 996612If you’re feeling creative and have always wanted to give painting ordrawing ago, pick up some supplies and try your hand at creating yourown work of art. Painting is a great hobby to have throughout the yearas it can be enjoy indoors or out; hobbies come in all shapes and sizesand are great for keeping our minds active, stimulated and creative whileaway from work. A recent study suggests that engaging in a hobby, likeknitting, making a patchwork quilt, or even reading a book can delay theonset of dementia. In the study from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, nearly200 people ages 70 – 89 with mild memory problems were compared toa group who had no impairment. Researchers asked the volunteers abouttheir daily activities within the past year, and how mentally active theyhad been from 50 – 65-years-old; those who had been busy reading orengaging in craft hobbies had a 40% reduced risk of memory impairment. You don’t have to travel far to find something of beauty worth painting,as local parks, churches and trails are guaranteed provide a great placeto start. If you’re looking to travel further afield, the glorious scenery ofScotland and the sunny south coast are fabulous for painting, drawing andmore adventurous activities to combine with your art.As most of us now own digital cameras, with access to instant images ofthe landscape we’ve just captured, we often ignore the true beauty anddetail when admiring views of the countryside. The only way to trulyappreciate the beauty in our everyday lives and our surroundings is topaint it. Taking time to delicately paint or draw the landscape before youis the best way to truly take in your surroundings and ensure you noticeevery detail of what’s right in front of you.The closest many of us come to including art in our holidays is by visitingnational galleries and museums, and taking in the most famous pieces ofwork. With over eight million visitors each year, The Louvre (Musée duLouvre) in Paris, France is the most visited art gallery in the world. Hometo 35,000 works of art - including Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ – it’s nothard to see why it attracts so many art fans each year. The Louvre beats thenext most visited art gallery by over two million visitors; The MetropolitanMuseum of Art in New York welcomes over six million visitors throughits doors each year, closely followed in third by The British Museum inLondon, which sees over 5.8 million people looking to soak up some art.The art world can be intimidating, but there’s something in every artgallery and museum that everyone can enjoy. In fact, a recent study byHarris Interactive found that people are happier when they spend moneyon experiences rather than material purchases, which is why the admissionprice to any art gallery is money well spent. Many art galleries andmuseums are busiest at the weekend so if you want to take your time andenjoy looking at the art in a quieter setting, it’s best to avoid the weekendcrowds. As well as being a great place that inspires everyone, whether you’re sixor eighty-six, art galleries are also great places to spend quality time withfriends and family, in an inspirational and educational setting. Many of thelarger galleries and museums are also free to visitors, so they provide youand your family with a great way to spend some quality time together forvery little money.Aspire would like to encourage our readers to get out and about intothe region, and beyond, this summer and discover some of the fantastic, creative works of art being created by independent artists in studios andworkshops across the country. I have always enjoyed sewing, and I’ve been making patchwork quiltsregularly for over 20 years. In 2002, we visited Hungary for the first time. Our youngest sonwas living there for a year. For the first time, I learnt of the Traditional Kékfestő blue and whitehand-printed fabric and I was persuaded to make a quilt, using the blue and white cotton, for anInternational Exhibition that was being held the following year.“When I returned to Budapest in May 2003, with my quilt for the Exhibition, I was the only quilterpresent from the UK amongst people from over 30 different countries. Since the main reason forthe Exhibition was to make the fabric better known outside of Hungary, it occurred to me that bysetting up a website to sell online, I could help to promote the product in the UK. But I get manyonline orders from Europe, the States and Australia; these are often from folk of Hungariandescent, who want to have something from their homeland!“After another trip to Hungary in August, to buy fabric and meet the printers who make thehand-printed cotton fabric, my website was launched. Initially I wrote a couple of articles forPatchwork Magazines about my travels in Hungary and discovering the traditional craft, inorder to create awareness of the fabric, and I was invited to be a Trader at the newly establishedLoch Lomond Quilt Show. Then in 2005, I first went as a Trader to FoQ.in Birmingham.”Tell us about the history of Kékfestő?“Historically this fabric was once produced throughout Europe, using indigo to dye the cotton.Nowadays, a synthetic dye: Indantren is used, and each printer produces a slightly differenthue. The dye is colourfast and fade resistant. About 60 years ago, each town in Hungary had ablue-print workshop, which suppliedfabric, selling atlocal markets in thesurrounding area. The cotton was usedto make clothing, curtains andtablecloths in country areas. That tradition has almost died out, but there are still about eightfamily-run businesses that print the cloth. It is a resist print and there is a huge range of patternsavailable.”Where do you source your fabrics from?“Each printer tends to have his own range. These few workshops are scattered around thecountry, so unless you know where to go, it is difficult to find them! I have a good friend inBudapest, who loves textiles, and helps me trace the printers and she interprets for me. This isbecause most of the Craftsmen are now elderly, and only speak Hungarian.“Using the cloth for patchwork, has created a new market for this beautiful product, and it ishelping to keep it a ‘living tradition’. I buy fabrics from five of the printers, one of whom prints toorder for me - the Whites, the borders and many of the other patterns. I order only five metresof each pattern at a time, as it is mostly sold in ‘fat quarter’ of a metre pieces. It sells at £15per metre. Sometimes I receive orders for more than five metre pieces, and depending on theavailability this is ordered directly from Hungary. Each pattern has a code which indicates whichworkshop it has come from to ensure customers can match up the patterns.”More information on Kekfesto Cotton can be found online:www.kekfestocotton.co.ukTel: 01463 713206 | Email: gilly@kekfestocotton.co.uk20 ASPIREASPIRE 21
