Andy Borman, an IMG Academiesalum, successfully balanced rigorousacademics and elite athletics at DukeUniversity and now passes his lessonslearned onto current IMG BasketballAcademy students.A BORNLEADERFresh off a second soccer state championshipand another All-Conference selection in basketball,Andy Borman sat with his father to make a seriouslife decision. He could spend his senior year of high school at hissmall North Carolina private school with a handfulof scholarship offers and be the proverbial big fishin a small pond, or he could transfer to IMG Academies,as suggested by his soccer coach.“I went for what was supposed to be a three-weekcamp just to see if I would like it,” he remembers.“Three weeks turned into six, then nine, then thewhole summer. I went home for about three days atthe end of summer to pack my things and returnedto enroll for the school year. I knew I loved sports, but didn’t realize how much until I went to IMG.”Now the Director of the IMG Basketball Academy, life has come full circle for Borman. Of course, coaching may have been his destiny regardless ofhis career path.Andy announced in January that he will leave his role to move toNew York with his wife. While Andy will be missed by all, he hasexpressed his confidence in the future growth of our basketballprogram. We are dedicated to ensuring that Andy’s replacementwill continue the momentum we have built in attracting the bestyoung women and men at the youth, high school, collegiate andpro levels from around the globe.ANDYBORMANimg BASKETBALLacademy directorAstronauts and ArmyTo know Andy Borman is to know his history. His grandfather Frank Borman was an astronautwho served as the commander of the first successfulorbit around the moon in 1968 (Apollo 8) andchose to retire rather than join the mission thatallowed for the first humans to walk on the moon. His father, Fred Borman, played football at WestPoint, then returned after graduating as acoach for the football team. At West Point, thebasketball coach introduced his wife’s sisterto Fred Borman and the two would latermarry. The matchmaker/basketballcoach’s name? Mike Krzyzewski.Borman would spend muchof his teenage years around“Coach K” and dreamed ofwearing the Duke uniform. So after a standout year atIMG Academies, Bormannarrowed his collegechoices to SMU, Notre Dame and Duke, but thechoice wasn’t much of one at all. He was alwaysgoing to be a Blue Devil.A balancing actDespite excelling at both sports in high school,Borman chose to focus on soccer in college overbasketball. Still, upon completion of soccer season“Coach K” persuaded him to train with the basketballteam, which needed some bodies for practices, and maybe Borman could earn a walk-on spot. That Duke team was stacked in every sense of theword, with the starting lineup consisting of fivefuture NBA players. So, how did the first week go?“It was hell. I was a good basketball player – All-Conference and had played against elite guysduring AAU – but never played against that manygood players at once. And ‘Coach’ was tough. Fromthat first day until the day I die, ‘Uncle Mike’ is‘Coach.’”For the next four years, Borman would balancesoccer, basketball and academics at one of theworld’s most prestigious institutions of higherlearning, yet found nothing but success. Seven ofhis eight athletic seasons (four basketball, threesoccer) included a No. 1 ranking at some pointin the season. In 2001, he was part of the Dukemen’s basketball team that won the NationalChampionship.“Honestly, IMG Academies helped a lot. Living onmy own for a year and learning how to balance myown time was crucial. You train for more hours aday at IMG than at any college.”Returning to his alma materDuring a recent practice with his freshmen team,Borman was approached by Glen “Big Baby” Davis,an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics who wastraining at IMG Academies during the offseason.Davis asked if he could help the team, and Bormanobliged.Despite already spending hours on the court andin the weight room, Davis went on to teach postmoves to 14-year-olds for the rest of practice. Hethen stayed and helped coach a post-grad practice. That night, he sat on the bench as an assistantcoach for a post-grad game.“I don’t know of another school in the world wheresomething like that would happen organicallyand simply out of someone’s love for the game,”Borman said. “These kids will remember thatexperience for the rest of their lives.”Davis’ passion for the game is exactly what Bormanlooks for in potential IMG Basketball Academyplayers. And as a coach, he values many of thesame attributes that has made “Coach K” the mostsuccessful coach in NCAA history: Leadership.Integrity. Taking no shortcuts. Never sacrificingwhat you believe. And Borman would never squasha player’s dreams.“For the average kid chasing their dream, you haveto let him know that it’s okay to do that. Don’t putlimitations on them. For every LeBron, there’s aSteve Nash. But you have to work with them todefine success. I never played pro ball – does thatmake me unsuccessful? It would have if I didn’thave the right goals.“Success, to me, isn’t measured in wins or titles ortrophies. It’s helping kids find their path, not justin basketball but in life. I tell my players that if yougive blood, sweat and tears, basketball will give somuch more back to you than you gave to it.”“I don’t know of anotherschool in the world wheresomething like that wouldhappen organically andsimply out of someone’slove for the game”06 IMG BASKETBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/basketball-academyIMG BASKETBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/basketball-academy 07

DEVELOPINGSHELLDAILEYimg BASKETBALLacademy WOMEN’SHEAD COACHTALENTAfter a standout prep career, Dailey chose theUniversity of Texas and Coach Jody Conradt, whichresulted in four conference championships and oneFinal Four appearance. Conradt, one of the mostwinningcoaches in NCAA women’s basketballhistory, helped shape Dailey then and continues todo so today.Says Dailey: “I’ve been around some of the world’sbest coaches – for both men and women – and Istill haven’t found anyone who can rival her.”After graduating, Dailey spent eight years in thefashion industry, but the pull of basketball provedtoo tough. She spent time as an assistant for theUniversity of Florida, South Carolina and TexasA&M, as well as the WNBA’s San Antonio SilverStars. It was the potential she saw to play a key role inthe development of young athletes, though, thatbrought her to IMG Academies four years ago.Since arriving, her balanced approach to coaching– discipline mixed with caring and respect – hasalready helped in sending players to schoolslike Florida, Colorado State, Marshall, Nevada,Syracuse and UCLA to name just a few. It’s that influential role Dailey plays in assistinggirls to reach their dream of playing D-I basketballthat continues to drive her.“The opportunities here are limitless,” she said.“When college coaches come here to scout, theysee a kid who already knows how to balance aschedule and what it is like to live away from home. They know our players are ‘ready’ for anythingthat college life throws at them because they havealready experienced it at IMG.”To understand Shell Dailey’s coaching style, you have to look beyond the time she spentcoaching the world’s best female players inthe WNBA and past her playing days when shewore the signature burnt orange for the TexasLonghorns. No, you have to go all the way back to McKinney,Texas, where a 12-year-old Dailey started keepinga secret from her parents that they never learnedabout until more than 20 years later.Pushing 6-feet tall, Dailey knew she had potential, but it needed more than the set shots being taughtto her by the middle school coach. So every Sundayafter church, Dailey snuck down to a local park andplayed for hours with grown men who taught herelements like a drop step, hook shot and, most ofall, physicality.“My mother didn’t find out until four years agowhen a guy who used to play came up to her andsaid, ‘Man, Shell was tough on the court,’” recallsDailey with a laugh. Now the Director of the Women’s Program for theIMG Basketball Academy, Dailey has a backgroundto rival any coach’s in the nation.08 IMG BASKETBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/basketball-academyIMG BASKETBALL Academy 2012 | imgacademies.com/basketball-academy 09

You will always appreciate your opportunityat the academy so make sure you make the best of it.Not everyone gets this opportunity so keep your headup and it will be worth it.Favorite Basketball Moment:It’s hard for me to name one but I would have to saymy first Stanford-Cal game in my freshman year. Thefact that it was on our home court made it even morespecial. It was very intense.Returning from injury:The hardest thing about injuries is having to sit on thesidelines. I had a serious ankle sprain that took me outof a couple of practices and games and that was reallyhard on me. To watch my team and not be able to playhit me hard. Injuries are always hard to deal with andyou never know when they can come around.IMG Academies helping prepare you for college:There is no better place to prepare you for college. Theschedule for both sports and school is tough but theydo not just throw you into it, there is always a group ofpeople there to help you. I learned great time managementdue to everything that we were expected to do.IMG Academies and basketball development:Nothing compares to it. We played a national scheduleagainst some of the best talent in the country. Wealways had pros coming in to help us train and we rana lot of the same drills as college teams. Everyone wasthere to get better, the guy beside you wants you to getbetter, we were all invested in each other.Decision to come to IMG Academies:There were not a lot of opportunities to move on andget noticed in Canada. A lot of my teammates wereleaving to come to America and my coach recommendedthat I follow to get more exposure. I decidedon IMG Academies and stayed for 3 years.Being around great sports programs onStanford campus:The atmosphere is crazy. The success of the otherteams keeps us motivated to work hard. We cheerthem on but we do not want to be taken over by them. Our girls’ soccer team just won the NCAA Championshipand our football team is having a great year withAndrew Luck.POWELLcorner DWIGHTLevel of competition in Pac-12:There is no better motivation to play well than playingagainst someone who thinks they are betterthan you. You always want to prove them wrong. The competition always makes you better andkeeps you working hard. You cannot rest and expectto beat teams, competition keeps you honest.Choosing to go to Stanford:Picking a college was a big decision for me tomake. I had a lot of support from my family and thecoaches at IMG Academies. They helped me gathera lot of information early so I was able to make asmart decision. It was tough narrowing down theschools but it was very easy for me whenit came time to sign my Letter ofIntent.
