Page 22 Information <strong>Bulletin</strong> <strong>99</strong>-<strong>36</strong> Rural Municipality <strong>of</strong> <strong>Westbourne</strong>Water Erosion Risk Map.The risk <strong>of</strong> water erosion was estimated using the universal soil lossequation (USLE) developed by Wischmeier <strong>and</strong> Smith (1965). TheUSLE predicted soil loss (tons/hectare/year) is calculated for eachsoil component in each soil map polygon. Erosion risk classes areassigned based on the weighted average soil loss for each mappolygon. Water erosion risk factors include mean annual rainfall,average <strong>and</strong> maximum rainfall intensity, slope length, slopegradient, vegetation cover, management practices, <strong>and</strong> soilerodibility. The map shows 5 classes <strong>of</strong> soil erosion risk based onbare unprotected soil:negligiblelowmoderatehighsevereCropping <strong>and</strong> residue management practices will significantlyreduce this risk depending on crop rotation program, soil type, <strong>and</strong>l<strong>and</strong>scape features.Table 8.
