We work to improve life chances for present <strong>and</strong>future generations in a holistic way, connecting health,environment, money <strong>and</strong> work. We ask how societiescan move beyond short-termism <strong>and</strong> target research,investment <strong>and</strong> policies to manage risk, promote equity<strong>and</strong> build dynamic resilience.Transforming health care deliveryfor long-term public benefitDartmouth College’s Center for Health Care Delivery <strong>and</strong>the World Bank Institute are partnering with <strong>Salzburg</strong><strong>Global</strong> <strong>Seminar</strong> to accelerate global progress on thefundamental right to health for all people.In 2012, <strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> launched a multi-yearcollaboration on Realizing The Right To Health, aninternational exchange among key scholars, practitioners<strong>and</strong> policy makers, including World Bank President, Dr.Jim Yong Kim. Participants produced a groundbreakingstatement – Better Care for All, Every Time: A Call toAction – that has been presented to the World HealthAssembly <strong>and</strong> other key international bodies. In-regioninnovation sessions will now test approaches <strong>and</strong> bestpractices forged in <strong>Salzburg</strong>, building momentum for amajor paradigm shift in global health delivery.1213


<strong>Justice</strong>Democracy,Economy& Rule of LawAs power is dispersed in a multipolar world, shifts inallegiance <strong>and</strong> identity are triggering radical shifts inrelationships between individuals <strong>and</strong> institutions. Weask how societies can reframe responsibilities, rights <strong>and</strong>cooperation between citizens, business, governments <strong>and</strong>regions to foster conditions for peace <strong>and</strong> prosperity.Modernizing governancefor results on the groundPaul Volcker, former Head of the US Federal Reserve, haschaired three sessions on economic governance. Impressedby <strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong>’s ability to assemble leading thinkers<strong>and</strong> actors along with rising stars from government,business <strong>and</strong> civil society, he returns because “I meet newpeople <strong>and</strong> learn new things in <strong>Salzburg</strong>.” When Volckerdecided to form an institute to examine why ‘high policies’so often fail to achieve their intended results, he turned to<strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> to help refine its international agenda.In 2013, the Volcker Alliance for Effective Governance willhold its first international event at Schloss Leopoldskron.Leading analysts <strong>and</strong> policy makers from Europe, theUnited States, Asia <strong>and</strong> other regions – many of whomare members of the <strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> Network – will assessstate-of-the-art research <strong>and</strong> comparative experience to setpriorities for the Alliance <strong>and</strong> for regional <strong>and</strong> nationalinitiatives around the world. Launched ten years ago, our Academiesare built in collaboration with forward-looking highereducation institutions, scholars <strong>and</strong> teachers. Theseintensive <strong>and</strong> highly selective courses – held in <strong>Salzburg</strong> oradapted to the needs of other regions - are used to develop,test <strong>and</strong> implement creative global curricula, pedagogy <strong>and</strong>research.<strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> Academies involve faculty <strong>and</strong> studentsfrom regions <strong>and</strong> groups typically underrepresented inleadership echelons. For 35 years he created <strong>and</strong>launched public media programs <strong>and</strong> companiesat the forefront in providing interactiveexperiences <strong>and</strong> global perspective. At WNET/New York in the 1980s, he pioneered distancelearning that combined broadcast, computer<strong>and</strong> in-person instruction. As President <strong>and</strong> CEOof Public Radio International in the 1990s, helaunched direct satellite radio channels for incarlistening <strong>and</strong> one of the earliest communitybasedweb news services. He designed <strong>and</strong>implemented sustainable business models tosupport these ventures, many of which remainviable today. President <strong>and</strong> CEO since 2005,Stephen is rebr<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> as aworld-class force in strategic convening, to buildpartnerships that unite leading edge thinkers,influencers <strong>and</strong> donors around shared agendasfor change, <strong>and</strong> that involve young innovatorsfrom every part of the world.Patricia BentonChief Financial OfficerPatricia Benton’s experience across private<strong>and</strong> public sectors yields a perfect blendof management, financial <strong>and</strong> partnershipbuilding skills. A firm believer in multidisciplinaryapproaches, her background spansthe arts, business, law <strong>and</strong> policy. She is aqualified barrister with 20 years’ experienceas an environmental policy expert for the UN<strong>and</strong> regional organizations, governments, theprivate sector <strong>and</strong> NGOs, playing an influentialrole in biosecurity, transboundary cooperation,conflict prevention <strong>and</strong> institutionaltransformation. Previously based in Paris forover 20 years, she has led project teams onfour continents. Clare began her career inindustry <strong>and</strong> the media after studying literatureat Oxford <strong>and</strong> has written regularly for theFinancial Times since 2003. Chief ProgramOfficer since 2012, Clare has restructuredthe <strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong> Program, catalyzed newtransnational partnerships <strong>and</strong> positionedthe organization to craft multi-year changeagendas.George ZarubinChief Development OfficerGeorge Zarubin is the newest addition to seniormanagement, leaving his role as president ofthe Eurasia Foundation in May 2013 to lead<strong>Salzburg</strong> <strong>Global</strong>’s development of philanthropicpartnerships. George underst<strong>and</strong>s grantmaking <strong>and</strong> donor interests having playedsenior roles in Europe <strong>and</strong> the United States atEurasia <strong>and</strong> the Soros Foundation Kazakhstan,<strong>and</strong> as a leader within important fundingnetworks such as the Council on Foundations<strong>and</strong> the European Foundation Centre.
