Dams & DikesPhotos: (l-r) J. Herman, J. Herman, DiavikFrozen Core DamsFrozen core dams are a type of earth filled dam typicallyconstructed in high latitudes with permafrost conditions.Coolant circulates through thermosyhons to maintain awater-tight region of the permafrost within.NUNA has designed and assembled its own plants forthe construction of frozen core dams. The plants can accuratelymonitor the moisture content and temperature of core granularmaterial prior to placement and produce up to 4,000 tonnesper 24-hour shift.Bhp Billiton Diamonds Inc.EKATI Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories, CanadaNUNA has been involved as a contractor with BHP fromthe early stages of devel op ment of its $1 billion EKATIDiamond Mine. One challenge for the EKATI Mine was to build an800 m long frozen core dam to contain 100 million m 3 ofprocessed kimberlite in an area where there was no source of lowpermeable soil and a number of other soils constraints such assand, gravel, boulders, permafrost and an unfrozen zone belowthe boulder creek bed.The solution – EBA Engineering designed and NUNAconstructed the award-winning Leslie Long Lake Frozen CoreDam with a core created of saturated, processed sand and gravelplaced in layers during the winter so that each layer froze beforesubsequent material was added. Thermosyphons, which arepassive devices, were installed to keep the structure and theotherwise permeable creek bed frozen. The success of this dam resulted in 3 other similar damsat EKATI’s satellite site, Misery, which NUNA constructed.DikesDikes serve to isolate portions of lake beds from the main lakebody providing accessibility for open pit mining.Rio Tinto, Diavik Diamond Mines inc.Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories, CanadaLac de Gras Constructors (LDGC) is a joint venture betweenNUNA and Peter Kiewit Sons, formed to construct Diavik DiamondMines’ A154 dike, North Inlet dike, A418 dike, and raising of thePKC dams. LDGC’s A154 and A418 dike contract comprised dikeconstruction, dewatering and pre-stripping.The A154 dike is the first dike of its kind constructedin Canada and was completed ahead of schedule. The A154kimberlite pipe, located 20 m below water off an island in Lacde Gras, required the construction of a 3.9 km long and up to25 m high dike to enclose an area of 1.5 km 2 . Construction of thedike involved placing 2.2 million m 3 of zoned rock fill and a plasticconcrete diaphragm wall which extended through both the fill andthe till foundation. The wall was joined to the granite bedrock bya continuous barrier of jet-grouted columns.A418’s water retaining dike and cut-off wall is1.2 km long, required approximately 1.1 million cubic metersof rockfill and was built in water up to 32 m deep. A418 dikejoins the existing A154 dike with construction methods similar toA154 – various sizes of rockfill, a central plastic concrete cut-offwall, jet and curtain grouting and installation of instrumentation.A significant crushing facility prepared much of the rock obtainedfrom A154 open pit.www.nunalogistics.com

Committed to Northern DevelopmentDependable Project DevelopmentLarge DiameterDrillingPhoto: Shore Gold Inc.Nuna Drilling provides large diameter drilling using the Bauer BG 36, a state of the art drillrig capable of augering to a depth of 85 m and flooded reverse circulation drilling (1,200 mmdiameter) to an ultimate depth of over 350 m.

Large Diameter DrillingPhotos: NUNANuna Drilling ServicesNUNA Drilling’s Bauer BG 36 drill rig systems are capable ofdrilling 1,200 mm (4') diameter holes to a depth of 350 m(1,150'). These diesel-powered electric/hydraulic units utilizeCaterpillar-powered crawler units with retractable masts. After aunit is walked to a large diameter drill (LDD) location, overburden toa maximum depth of 85 m (279') is augered using a Kelly systemwith a selection of excavation tools. A Bauer-supplied oscillator isused to set and recover double-walled casing to as much as 40m (131') depth. Beyond that depth, or in harder formations, thesystem is reconfigured to use reverse circulation drilling. In reverse circulation mode, 6 m (20') long sections of9-5/8" double-walled drill pipe are added to the drill string utilizinga manipulator which enables an operator to handle pipe whilesafely removed from the suspended load. Compressed air issupplied down the hole between the inner and outer pipe walls.Air valves which form part of the drill string allow high-pressureair to enter the inner pipe at a distance above the hole bottomand to escape to surface; the vacuum created lifts slurry from thehole bottom. Holes are drilled in flooded conditions utilizing drilling“muds” to stabilize open holes below the casing.A variety of drill bits are employed to suit conditionswhich range from soft soils to rock with high compressivestrengths. Drill data is electronically recorded for later analysis.Sampling for diamonds in kimberlite is accomplishedthrough the use of a desanding unit which separates drilling fluidsfrom the sample, washes the sample and recovers materialsgreater than a specified size. The samples are bagged andtransported to a designated area.Drilling operations are 24 hours per day, year-round.Successful Projects by NUNA & PartnersShore Gold Inc.Star Diamond Project, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, CanadaBulk Sample 184 Holes (39,000 m) (128,000')Shore Gold Inc.’s Star Diamond Project lies in Fort à la Corne,Saskatchewan, hosting one of the most extensive kimberlite fieldsin the world. The kimberlite is overlain by as much as 120 m(394') of overburden consisting of sand, mudstone, bouldersand glacial till.NUNA Drilling was chosen to conduct a large diameterdrill program, with an initial target of 72 holes, to collect bulksamples from the extensive area. Holes were 1,200 mm indiameter (4') with depths ranging to over 300 m (984').Working with Bauer Maschinen GmbH, NUNA Drillingdeveloped new equipment and techniques to drill holes in 2 stages. The process used 2 sets of fully-equipped mobile BG 36 drill rigs, bentonite and polymer solutions and primary support equipment;all provided by NUNA Drilling. Holes were “Kelly drilled” through thefirst 85 m of overburden and then the rigs were switched to reversecirculation drilling and geologists were provided sampling intervals.Rigs were walked between holes and the skid-mounted supportequipment was repositioned with support equipment. Operationscontinued year-round on a 24 hour basis.NUNA Drillings’ work for Shore Gold extended onto theFALC Joint Venture ground where a series of similar holes weredrilled. Accumulated drill program covered 184 holes (39,000 m)(128,000').www.nunalogistics.com
