HELPING TODAY’S KIDS
BECOME TOMORROW’S STARS
Safe Place
My name is Chantel Dahlia Tafoya Sanchez, and I am proud to tell
you who I am.
When I was fi ve years old, I didn’t know the pain and suffering my
family would go through, I didn’t know that we could become a
statistic, our lives ruined by violence and addiction. But I did know
that I had found a safe place to go that would become my place of
refuge, where I could learn and grow. For the last thirteen years, my
Boys & Girls Club has helped me become who I am today.
I participated in all the Boys & Girls Club programs ... I honed my
athletic abilities, studied countless hours with the help of the education
staff and resources, and participated in numerous leadership
programs ... all of which made a tremendous impact on my life. But
there are so many other ways my Club has helped shape my life....
The Club is where we ate our meals. Every single night after school,
I knew I had a hot, nutritious meal waiting for me at the Club. Without
this meal, more than 50% of our kids would not eat dinner.
The Club is where I received clothes to wear to school. Hundreds
of children whose families can’t-or won’t-buy them clothes or school
supplies are sponsored every year.
The Club sponsored assistance for my vision needs and made sure
I had a toothbrush and proper dental care. The Club’s Dave Pratt
Dental Clinic provides more than 2,500 dental services each year
for youth in need.
The Club prepared me for the future. They helped me earn scholarships to attend Arizona State
University to become an emergency room physician. In fact, the Club has scholarship programs that
will allow members to attend universities throughout the country
... Vanderbilt, Princeton, Berkeley just to name a few, as well as
schools right here at home.
My fi rst trip outside of my community was with the Boys & Girls
Club, and my most memorable trip, in September, was to meet
with President George Bush in the Oval Offi ce, where I told him
just how important the Boys & Girls Club has been in my life. And,
yes, that trip was because of my Club.
The Club is where I always had the support and guidance of adult mentors who
I knew really cared about what happened to me.
The Boys & Girls Club has helped defi ne me every step of the way.
I am now a freshman at ASU, starting a new chapter in my life. But I will never
forget the lessons I learned along the way -lessons that make me who I am today.
I am no longer a child, but I will forever be a Boys & Girls Club kid.
My name is Chantel Dahlia Tafoya Sanchez, and I am proud to tell you who I am.

Where Kids Come First!
In a world that is rapidly and radically changing, today’s youth need a safe haven that provides them with the resources needed to
succeed. The Boys & Girls Club is that safe haven.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix inspires and enables youth in our community, especially those faced with diffi cult
and challenging circumstances, to realize their individual potential while learning responsible citizenship.
By focusing on fi ve core programs that help develop a positive self-identity, educational competencies,
and values, the Club can enable youth to develop positive relationships with others. These fi ve core
programs include Education & Career Development; the Arts; Health & Life Skills; Sports, Fitness &
Recreation; and Character & Leadership Development. Youth with these capacities are more likely to
become responsible citizens and leaders who make meaningful
contributions and live successful lives.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix is a safe place for
our community’s children to learn and grow - all while having fun.
Membership dues average only $30 per year, yet more than half of the youth served by the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix must receive some scholarship assistance, as no
child is turned away because of his/her family’s inability to pay.
Membership dues constitute only 1% of the club’s annual budget. All-day summer program
fees comprise another 4%. This is all the communities we serve can afford, and where
children most need the safety, stability, and positive programs of their local
neighborhood Boys & Girls Club.
Hope and opportunity can make all the difference in a kid’s life, inspiring and
enabling every child to realize his or her biggest dreams. Every day the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix opens the doors of hope and opportunity
for youth in our Valley’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. At the Boys & Girls
Club, they have a safe place to learn and grow, establish ongoing relationships
with caring adults, and participate in life-enhancing programs and experiences.
They find a home away from home - a sanctuary.
Club staff are incredibly passionate about the work we do and the people
we serve - our kids. For almost sixty years and as one of the Valley’s most
established youth-serving agencies, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan
Phoenix continues to provide our youth with hope, opportunities, and a safe
place that enables them to become responsible citizens.
This year we see the result of years of hard work as our 2005 Youth of the
Year, Chantel Sanchez, a thirteen-year member of our Peoria Branch, was
selected Boys & Girls Clubs of America Youth of the Year for the
Pacific Region. We also served more than 26,500 children Valley wide, fully
renovated our Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch, and made some major
improvements to three of our branches. In addition, we launched the
Kids, Clubs, Opportunities Growth Initiative to raise funding for three new
clubhouses.
We invite you to get to know some of our kids, our programs, and our staff by
reading their stories on the following pages. Some of their stories have been
written over the years, others are just beginning and can be written with your
participation and support. Thank you for helping us improve children’s lives by
supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix.
Sincerely,
Commitment
STRONG LEADERSHIP, TRUE COMMITMENT
Dear Community Member,
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix (BGCMP) is an important resource for our community.
Children and families depend on the Clubs’ nationally recognized quality programming to help kids learn
and grow. As community members, we depend on the Clubs as a place we know kids can participate in
positive, constructive activities.
What many people don’t realize is that the BGCMP focuses on bringing these life-changing programs
and services to communities desperate for youth services yet unable to pay for them. At the BGCMP,
children’s annual membership fees constitute only 1% of the total budget. All-day summer program fees
comprise another 4%. That’s what our families can afford--the rest is up to us.
We are in the process of raising $26 million to update our current facilities, expand programming capacity
and, I am thrilled to tell you, build the following three new clubhouses in communities anxiously awaiting
our help:
--The Robson Family Club, 29th Street and Greenway Road
--The Jerry Colangelo Club, 34th Avenue and McDowell Road
--The Glendale Club, 63rd Avenue and Maryland Avenue
Your help will bring us one step closer to building these clubhouses that will open the doors to hope and
opportunity for our community’s youth for generations to come. Please consider making a gift in support
of this growth initiative to better our community. Please call the BGCMP at 602.954.8182 for more
information on how you can help.
Warmest regards,
One of eight children raised by a single mother
in a tough neighborhood, Denise and her siblings
found a safe haven at their neighborhood Boys
& Girls Club. At the Club, Denise thrived in the
Education Center and soon realized she could
achieve anything she wanted -and what she
wanted the most was to earn a college degree.
Denise did receive a college degree and followed
her life’s mission: As the Education Coordinator
at the Herbert Kieckhefer Branch, she has helped
kids in one of the Valley’s most vulnerable
neighborhoods. Denise educates, encourages,
and supervises kids in a club like the one she
joined years ago. Denise has implemented a
program that is so successful it has earned
national recognition and received the
Programming Excellence in Education Award at
the Boys & Girls Clubs of America 2005 National
Education Technology Summit.
Education
Education Is the Key to a Better Future
Denise is making a world of difference—one child at a time. “I believe it’s my duty to work with kids from my same background,”
says Denise.
At the Kieckhefer Branch, Denise designs activities that refl ect the Education & Career Development core program,
which enables youth to become profi cient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations, and embrace
technology to optimize employability. At the Club, Denise and the Boys & Girl Club education team incorporate professionally
designed activities such as homework assistance, career development workshops, science programs, learning skills development,
reading hours, and more, to empower our children.
In recent outcome surveys 77% of the BGCMP’s kids stated that they do not have a computer at home to use. And 56% of the
survey’s respondents indicated that if they did not do their homework at the Boys & Girls Club their
homework would not get done at all. The Education & Career Development core program provides
the essential tools for our community’s youth to become successful adults creating a better future:
Opening the Door to Creativity and Hidden Talents
For many kids like Kaylee, the Arts core program provides an outlet to express themselves and be recognized. For Kaylee, the
arts also hold the keys to learning, and through this program she is able to learn, achieve, and succeed. With the declining
availability of art programs in schools, the Boys & Girls Club provides youth with an opportunity to express themselves freely,
capturing their passions and emotions as well as allowing them to explore new ideas, subject matter, and cultures.
The Arts core program of the Boys & Girls Club enables youth to develop creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and
appreciation of visual and tactile arts and crafts, performing arts, and creative writing. Kids at all ten clubs of the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix can enjoy a diversity of art programs that include fi ne arts, crafts, photography, talent shows,
performing arts, literary arts, as well as exhibits and other great opportunities.
Phillip, age 11
Latonia, age 16 Kaylee, age 9
Kaylee joined the Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch at age
six. When she fi rst walked into the Club’s art room, she
couldn’t stop smiling from ear to ear. There, she knew she
had found a place where she could draw, paint, and create
anything that her imagination could dream of. Today she
is an aspiring young artist who is working to fully develop
her artistic abilities.
Kaylee’s passion for anything related to art has led this
sixth grader to win the Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Pacifi c Region Image Makers Photography Contest and
has provided her with a unique voice to express herself.
The arts keep Kaylee coming back every day to the club,
where she also participates in the other programs the
Club has to offer. For instance, she participates in the
homework hour program, which has helped raise her math
grades from an F to a B average. At the Club, she also
receives the support of the Sight for Students program,
which opened a whole new world by providing her with
brand new eyeglasses. For Kaylee, the arts and the Club
bring an additional joy into her life every day.
“The arts are, above all, the special language of children,
who, even before they learn to speak, respond intuitively
Once labeled shy and withdrawn, fi fteen-year-old Daisy has
blossomed following her participation in the Girl Power program
at The Virginia G. Piper Teen Center at the Harry & Sandy
Rosenzweig Branch.
A club member since the age of ten, Daisy was content keeping to
herself. When she started having problems transitioning into high
school, she turned to the Club for help and enrolled in the Girl
Power program.
Daisy says, “Most of the girls that I went to school with or know are
either pregnant, into alcohol and drugs, or dead. The Girl Power
program is one main factor that helped keep me out of situations
like that. I feel that Girl Power is a passage to a place in your life
where you can fi nally be confi dent and content with yourself.” The
Girl Power program has helped Daisy set her personal goals and
feel confi dent that she can achieve them.

HEALTHY LIVING:
Key Choices for a Healthy Life
For some youth, the best way to develop a positive selfidentity
is by participating in a safe environment with caring
adults and a group of understanding peers.
The Health & Life Skills core program provides these
opportunities by developing young people’s capacity to
engage in positive behaviors that help nurture their own
well-being, set personal goals, and acquire the skills to live
successfully as self-suffi cient adults.
Girl Power has helped Daisy unlock her potential. For many
kids, improving their oral health or receiving a warm meal
everyday at the Club is what makes a dramatic change in their
lives. The Health & Life Skills core program is offered to youth
through health and nutrition outreach, fi tness programs, and
peer discussion groups that help youth successfully resist
gangs and violence and resolve confl icts.
Teamwork
AT THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, SPORTS ARE NEVER JUST ABOUT THE GAME...
THEY HELP UNLOCK CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, AND TEAMWORK SKILLS
And ten-year-old Jordan knows this all too well. As a member of the Spencer D. & Mary Jane Stewart Branch, Jordan has been able to
enjoy participating in all the programs the Club has to offer. But it is sports that keep him coming back. A likable young man that kids
look up to, Jordan has played in as many sports as he can, including basketball, fl ag football, Wiffl e ball, and golf.
With the guidance of the Club’s Health & P.E. Coordinator, Jordan has matured tremendously this past year, becoming a leader to
other Club members, leading the Club’s all-star and fl ag football leagues, cheering on his teammates to give 100%, helping out in other
areas in the Club, and looking forward to a bright future.
Nothing Can Stop Jordan Now . . .
Sports play a very important role in teaching a child to develop
intrapersonal skills and helping them learn to work as a team.
Jordan has not only found a great way to stay healthy and feel
good about himself, but also a way for him to develop character
and become a leader at the Club.
The Sports, Fitness & Recreation core program promotes
physical fi tness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress
management, appreciation for the environment, and social and
interpersonal skills. Through this program, children learn about
teamwork, honesty, and responsibility; they acquire selfconfi
dence; and incorporate healthy choices into their lives.
From games to organized sports and other recreational programs,
there truly is an activity for everyone.

Extraordinary
What would you think of a child who gave his brand new, shiny,
red fi re truck to a boy he had never met but had heard was
sad because the boy had lost his own toy when his parents
divorced? What would you think of that child if you knew the
brand new fi re truck was to be his only real Christmas present?
Meet ten-year-old Jaylyn. When his dad stepped out of the
picture, grandpa stepped in to raise Jaylyn along with eight
other grandchildren. At the I. G. Homes Branch, Jaylyn found
stability, caring mentors, and a place to be a kid. Jaylyn has
since blossomed into an extraordinary young man.
When he was selected as the 2005 Kid of the Year, Jaylyn was
both honored and terrifi ed to deliver his speech. The staff’s
positive reinforcement boosted Jaylyn’s self-confi dence and
provided him with the tools necessary to overcome his fears
and trust himself. Jaylyn continues to thrive and develop the
character that will help him make a difference throughout
his life.
HELPING TODAY’S KIDS
BECOME TOMORROW’S STARS
When Jaylyn took the stage to deliver his Kid of the Year speech, he didn’t think
twice about where his new-found confi dence came from. When Chantel Sanchez
fi rst walked into the Boys & Girls Club at age fi ve, she wasn’t looking to develop her
character and leadership --they were a natural result of her participation. Through
programs, activities, and everyday interactions, the Club helps children develop a
positive self-identity and values that enable them to become responsible citizens
and leaders who make meaningful contributions and live successful lives.
With a goal to develop leaders in our community, the Character &
Leadership Development core program empowers youth to support and
infl uence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others,
develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities.
Through a variety of programs, the caring mentors and role models at the clubs inspire children to become successful leaders in
their communities. These programs include:
Youth of the Year Program
Kid of the Year Program
Keystone Club
Torch Club
TEEN Supreme
Kids Voting Arizona
Junior Staff Program
Some of the greatest contributions the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix gives to our community and our kids are the
life-long lessons taught every
Leadership
day, and every hour at the club. Those lessons help today’s kids develop into tomorrow’s stars. From
Chantel to Kaylee, Daisy to Jaylyn, Denise to Jordan, and all the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Club kids, thank you
for your support in making each child’s story possible.

Confused about how to easily contribute the most while impacting your
bottom line the least? The State of Arizona and the Federal Government
offer incentives that will help you make a difference.
How the State of Arizona is encouraging you to help:
Your personal donation may qualify you for a state income tax credit--not
just a deduction, but an actual credit! Arizona tax law permits an
individual to take a credit of up to $200 (or $300 if married fi ling jointly)
when contributing to a qualifying organization such as the BGCMP. To
receive this credit, a taxpayer must itemize on his/her individual state
return and have established a baseline year for charitable contributions.
For more information, please visit www.revenue.state.az.us/welfl ist.htm.
How the Federal Government is encouraging you to help:
In an effort to encourage individual giving for Katrina relief efforts and
for the community nonprofi t organizations that will likely suffer from a
decrease in funding because of the Katrina disaster, special incentives
have been approved for cash gifts made between August 28, 2005, and
December 31, 2005. Under the new law, an individual can contribute up
to 100% of his/her adjusted gross income (as opposed to the normal
50% rule). If the individual is over age 59 1/2, he/she may use IRA or other
qualifi ed retire plan funds to make a cash gift pursuant to the
above guidelines.
Please consult with your tax advisor to determine how the new rules
may affect you and how to make the best overall decisions for you and
your community.
Thank you very much for your support.
