More fun than a calf roping contest, It’s the Rural Medicine Issue! Volume VIII, Number 3 Spring 2005 Paging Dr. Love! Meeting your perfect match before the Match C ould your classmate be your soulmate? Is your true love hiding out somewhere in Omaha? Perhaps life-long commitment and the thoughts of children, a mini-van, and a second mortgage have never even crossed your mind. Yet, as your med school years fly by, many of the babes and hunks you call classmates take the plunge into the marriage pool. Some even have babies. How do these people find love amidst the rigors of academic life? Hard core 80’s femme rocker, Pat Benatar, once said, “We are strong, no on can tell us we're wrong, Searchin' our hearts for so long, Both of us knowing- Love is a battlefield.” Now, I am not going to elaborate on the wise and hauntingly beautiful words of Pat, I just wanted to add them to this article. However, it’s nice to point out, with spring looming, that love might be in the air for you single folks- or even marriage. The following stories (as told by the students themselves) are proof that you can still tie the proverbial knot while you learn to tie surgical knots. Bible Study Buddies Leslie Snyder (M3) and Ryan Tourangeau met in a 20's singles Bible study at King of Kings Lutheran Church and eventually started dating at the beginning of Foreword by Kris Kazlauskas her second year of med school. Ryan, who was blissfully non-medical (an engineer), actually enjoyed hearing her rather disgusting pathology stories and interesting facts. Leslie appreciated being able to escape from medicine in her conversations with Ryan and she loved being able to share her faith with her significant other. She decided that quality time with her true love was more important than getting top grades on every exam, which was a new revalation for this very type A personality. Although they were extrememely stressed during preparation for Step 1, they managed to not only stay together, but even get engaged on a much needed camping vacation immediately after boards last June. Leslie then managed to do almost all of the big wedding planning in the three weeks before her M3 year started in July (yes, even The DRESS), which was very exhausting but worth not having to worry about it during rotations. This is only possible if you are able to be very organized and already know what you are looking for in almost every detail (the type A personality never really goes away, but it does occasionally pay off). Leslie and Ryan are counting down the days until they will be married in Omaha on June 25, 2005. See Love Tales: Page 2
