UK forces succeeded <strong>in</strong> prevent<strong>in</strong>g any re<strong>in</strong>forcementof Basra and, along with <strong>the</strong> Mar<strong>in</strong>es, secured <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn oil fields. Special forces troopsoperated throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater. In <strong>the</strong> west, Jo<strong>in</strong>t Special <strong>Operation</strong>s Task Force-West workedto reduce <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater ballistic missile (TBM) threat to Iraq’s neighbors. In <strong>the</strong> north, Jo<strong>in</strong>tSpecial <strong>Operation</strong>s Task Force-North, along with Kurdish troops, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed pressure on <strong>the</strong>nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Iraqi</strong> forces.Throughout it all, CFACC cont<strong>in</strong>ued to degrade <strong>the</strong> regime’s ability to command andcontrol its forces and provided exceptional CAS to <strong>the</strong> coalition ground forces <strong>in</strong> contact.Coalition air forces roamed <strong>the</strong> skies over Iraq at will, provid<strong>in</strong>g CAS, <strong>in</strong>terdict<strong>in</strong>g enemyforces, and strik<strong>in</strong>g strategic targets across all of Iraq. Coalition ground forces maneuveredwith impunity, know<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> coalition determ<strong>in</strong>ed what flew. Coalition air attacks wereresponsive, accurate, and precise.In addition to operations on <strong>the</strong> ground and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air, several related and associatedactions took place that ei<strong>the</strong>r enabled <strong>the</strong> fight or prepared <strong>the</strong> battlefield for future operations.Those actions ranged from <strong>the</strong> anti-tactical ballistic missile fight to efforts to meet logisticsrequirements of units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field.The events over <strong>the</strong> next five days reflected Lieutenant Generals McKiernan’s andWallace’s constant balanc<strong>in</strong>g of rapid maneuver aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> need to secure <strong>the</strong> LOCs and ensure<strong>the</strong> forces did not reach a culm<strong>in</strong>ation po<strong>in</strong>t due to logistics shortfalls. Factors play<strong>in</strong>g on thisbalanc<strong>in</strong>g act <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong> scope and distance of <strong>the</strong> operation and <strong>the</strong> reality of <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>gcombat operations before <strong>the</strong> logistics base was fully established. That <strong>the</strong>y were successful <strong>in</strong>achiev<strong>in</strong>g this balance is a testament to <strong>the</strong> depth and breadth of plann<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>the</strong> command’s clearsense of operational and strategic objectives; and of course, <strong>the</strong> hard work and dedication of<strong>the</strong> soldiers on <strong>the</strong> ground. 6 At <strong>the</strong> end of this series of operations, V Corps had uncoiled nearly400 km <strong>in</strong>to Iraq and was ready to take <strong>the</strong> fight to Baghdad. What followed was an operationalground maneuver at impressive speeds. 7Trigger<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Runn<strong>in</strong>g Start<strong>On</strong> 19 March 2003, “D-day,” Phase II “Shap<strong>in</strong>g” operations started. Combat operationsbegan with a comb<strong>in</strong>ed F-117 and Tomahawk Missile strike to decapitate <strong>the</strong> regime bykill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> leadership and forc<strong>in</strong>g an early dis<strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong> defenses. Accord<strong>in</strong>gto open media report<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> decision was based on highly perishable <strong>in</strong>telligence report<strong>in</strong>gthat Saddam Husse<strong>in</strong> and several key subord<strong>in</strong>ate leaders were ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> a knownlocation. Unsure if such an opportunity would present itself aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> president authorized<strong>the</strong> strike. Although <strong>the</strong> strike failed, it presaged <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> phase’s operations andresulted <strong>in</strong> major ground operations preced<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiation of <strong>the</strong> air campaign.Concurrent with <strong>the</strong> decapitation strike, o<strong>the</strong>r operations occurred across Iraq. In <strong>the</strong> south,SOF secured gas and oil platforms and o<strong>the</strong>r key objectives. CFLCC conducted reconnaissanceand screen<strong>in</strong>g operations along <strong>the</strong> border. V Corps and I MEF units cont<strong>in</strong>ued to prepare forcombat operations. In <strong>the</strong> west, special operations troops prepared to secure key airfields andfacilities and moved to preempt <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iraqi</strong>s’ use of WMD and tactical missiles. In <strong>the</strong> north, SOFworked with <strong>the</strong> Kurdish opposition to fix <strong>Iraqi</strong> forces on <strong>the</strong> Green L<strong>in</strong>e as well as to deter90
