to Our Supporters

We thank you for your interest in and support of Greenville Technical College and the Greenville Tech
Foundation. Together we impact many lives every day. It is because of you that many people have
improved their quality of life and contribute to our area’s economic growth.
We faced many challenges, but achieved successes during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.
w We raised a total of $1.6 million which included about $775,000 in cash, $752,000 of in-kind
gifts, and $76,000 in pledges/deferred gifts. These funds helped the Foundation provide
much-needed support to the College and scholarships for deserving students.
w We completed construction of a new classroom building on our Brashier Campus. The
Foundation is leasing the building to Greenville Tech, which is subleasing space to the
Brashier Middle College Charter High School, eliminating the need for portable classrooms.
w The Foundation’s student housing project completed its third year of operation and
enabled about 430 students needing housing to attend Greenville Tech.
w Our McAlister Square operations continued to pay a distribution to the Foundation, which
was used to further support the College. Area non-profit organizations, governmental
entities and the University Center now occupy most of our space, and we are 95% leased.
w Our investment portfolio return was 10.41% net of fees.
The College’s mission is to provide access to quality higher education for as many people as possible.
This can be a challenge, especially for financially needy individuals. Thanks to your contributions to
the Foundation, we are able to offer scholarships that provide access to a valuable education for many
of these students. However, that need is growing greatly. Additionally, we must continue to keep our
programs up-to-date with the same equipment that is used in business and industry to ensure that our
graduates receive relevant training that makes them employable.
These are all big challenges compounded by the state’s economic situation. In the 09-10 year our state
funding was the same as it was in 1985. Yet, the number of students enrolled in the Fall 2010 semester
was over 15,000 compared to about 6,500 enrolled in the Fall 1985 semester.
The Greenville Tech team is pulling together and continuing to get the job done for our students. We
also need help from our donors like you. We solicit your continuing support to help our students and
our community.

Established in 1973, the Greenville Tech
Foundation provides financial support
to Greenville Technical College and its
students beyond that which can be obtained
from state and local funding sources. The
foundation acquires its funding through
charitable contributions from businesses,
industries, foundations, individuals and
earnings from its permanent endowment.
The foundation is an exempt organization
under the Internal Revenue Code’s section
501(c)(3) and is classified as a foundation
under section 509(a)(3) of the Code. It is
governed by a board of directors comprised
of community leaders in business, industry,
and the professions.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made
by cash, real estate or personal property,
securities, bequests, or by naming the
foundation as beneficiary of insurance
policies, trusts or retirement accounts.
Gifts can be designated or unrestricted,
and may be made on a one-time basis or
spread over several years.
Ninety percent of all designated gifts to the
Foundation will be applied to uses specified
by the donor. Consistent with the practices
of many non-profits, 10% will be used to
defray administrative costs.
The foundation manages over 100 endowed
funds. The foundation invests the funds in
accordance with the investment policies
and practices established by the Foundation
Board of Directors. Up to 5% of the earnings
are spent on uses specified by the donor
such as scholarships, educational/lab
equipment, faculty/staff development, and
capital needs.
The Foundation
The foundation also owns or manages
certain real estate.
For example:
w The foundation owns and manages a
large portion of McAlister Square, where
its offices are located. The space the
foundation owns is leased to some of the
universities occupying the University
Center, several county agencies, non-
profit groups and several commercial
enterprises. Space owned by the
foundation is 95 percent leased.
w The foundation leased land from the
college, issued tax-exempt bonds and
constructed 438 housing units in four
buildings along with a housing office/
activities building. This student housing
project, now in its third year, allows more
than 430 students to be members of a
living/learning community while they
further their education. Many of these
students would have been unable to
attend Greenville Tech had the foundation
not been able to offer housing.
w During the summer of 2008, the
foundation issued tax-exempt bonds
to finance the construction of a new
classroom building on the Brashier
Campus in Simpsonville. This building
was completed in August 2009 and leased
to Greenville Tech and Brashier Middle
College Charter High School, with lease
payments in an amount to allow for
repayment of the bonds.
The Greenville Tech Foundation has played a
critical role in the growth of Greenville Technical
College and has exciting plans to increase its
support of the college in the coming years.

Private Support
to the Foundation
A total of $1,352,705 and $1,603,974 in cash, pledges and gifts-in-kind was received in the 12
months ending June 30, 2009 and 2010 respectfully. Donors and fundraising events contributed
cash to the foundation totaling $825,157 in 2009 and $759,829 in 2010. Gifts-in-kind, such as
equipment and office furniture, were donated and valued at $472,813 in 2009 and $752,858
in 2010. Of the cash contributions, $747,534 (91%) in 2009 and $708,339 (93%) in 2010 was
restricted by the donors for scholarships, endowments, specific departments, or other purposes.
The remaining $77,623 (9%) in 2009 and $56,004 (7%) in 2010 was unrestricted.
As of June 30, 2009, the total net assets of the foundation, the GTF McAlister, LLC, the GTF
Student Housing, LLC, and Brashier, LLC were $8,621,693 and the total endowment was
$4,401,677. As of June 30, 2010, the total net assets were $7,501,631 and the total
endowment was $4,498,596.

Foundation Support
to the College
The foundation provided $6,181,588 in support to the College during 2008-2009 and $6,676,070
during 2009-2010. Types of support include: scholarships, equipment and supplies, faculty/staff
development, student and departmental activities, and ownership expenses of property held for
the benefit of the college such as the student housing complex, a Brashier campus classroom
building, and certain parts of McAlister Square.

The Entrepreneurs Forum recognizes individuals who have contributed to the prosperity
of upstate South Carolina through their entrepreneurial activities, business leadership, and
involvement in the community.
In September 2008, four Upstate entrepreneurs were inducted during the Entrepreneurs
Forum Gala at the Carolina First Center. J. Earle Furman, Jr. of NAI Earle Furman, LLC;
G. Jackson Hughes, Jr. of Hughes Commercial Properties, Inc.; Sandra S. Linning, a partner
in LinningSmoakCrawford Public Relations; and llyn strong, owner of llyn strong Fine Jewelry.

2009 Outstanding Philanthropist Award
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
James H. Benson received an Outstanding
Philanthropist Award at the National
Philanthropy Day luncheon at the Piedmont
Club in Spartanburg in November 2009.
Mr. Benson is the owner of automobile
dealerships in Greer, Spartanburg, and Easley,
South Carolina. He was an active member
of the Greenville Tech Foundation Board
of Directors for six (6) years and served as
chairman of the first “community campaign”
in support of the Greer campus of Greenville
Technical College. The campaign’s original
goal was $85,000, but Mr. Benson issued a
challenge by offering a pledge of $100,000
to match the first $100,000 raised in the
campaign. He also recruited other community
business leaders to participate in leadership
roles and to make gifts. The campaign was
successful, bringing in nearly $210,000.
Mr. Benson’s leadership goes beyond dollars.
He was one of two area Nissan dealers to
recognize the need for a higher level training
program for Nissan technicians. Together
these dealers worked with the Greenville
Tech Foundation, the dean of automotive
technology at Greenville Technical College, and
Nissan North America to design a program of
training now in place at Greenville Technical
College. He was also instrumental in obtaining
a contribution of more than $100,000 from
Nissan to underwrite the start of the program.

Alumni Awards
Ben Martin
2009 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year
Ben Martin enrolled in Greenville Tech in 1979 and studied
industrial building technology. While in college, he was hired as
a co-op student by Johnson Controls, Inc. and today serves as
the company’s district manager for Upstate South Carolina and
Western North Carolina. Ben was a member of the Alumni Council
and served as chairman of the golf tournament. He also served
on Greenville Tech’s advisory board for the HVAC/R program. He
secured a $10,000 donation from the Johnson Controls Foundation
and also secured the equipment valued at $50,000 for a heating,
ventilating, and air conditioning lab.
William Bradshaw
2009 Honorary Alumnus of the Year
William Bradshaw started his automotive career as an office
manager of a local Chevrolet dealership and he purchased his first
dealership in 1979. His company, Bradshaw Automotive, has grown
to over 400 employees and total sales exceeding $215,000,000. He
served as chairman of the National Automotive Dealers Association
and has won many awards including Dealer of the Year by the
American International Automotive Dealers Association (AIADA),
South Carolina Dealer of the Year, Time Magazine Quality Dealer,
and Greenville Magazine’s Business Person of the Year.
Ever since I was a small child, I have dreamed
of working around airplanes. Since being recently
named a recipient of the Stevens Aviation

Karri Westmoreland
2010 Outstanding Alumna of the Year
While working full-time, Karri Westmoreland studied business in
the evenings at Greenville Technical College. In 2008 she graduated
with honors, completing two associate degrees: one in Business
Management and one in Marketing. She has been employed for
four years at the Bon Secours St. Francis Foundation, where she
serves as director of development. She graduated from Furman
University Connections - Women Leaders of the Upstate and
volunteers with the Meyer Center for Special Children and the
Spartanburg County District Four School Improvement Council.
Ray Mattson
2010 Honorary Alumnus of the Year
Armed with a Harvard MBA and 16 years of leadership experience
with the Cryovac organization, Ray Mattson became president of
Southeastern Kusan in Greenville in 1973. The company had grown
to over 500 employees in multiple sites in the Upstate when Ray
retired in 1983. Mr. Mattson served on the Greenville Tech Area
Commission for over 33 years, and was chairman of the Finance
Committee. He and his late wife, Jane, chose to give a generous
planned gift valued in excess of $500,000 designating the Greenville
Tech Foundation as beneficiary.

Alumni Members
All graduates of Greenville Tech who hold
degrees, diplomas, and/or certificates from
the college, or have 24 or more curriculum
credit hours and are not current students are
eligible to become members of the Alumni
Association. Alumni shall have given an
annual gift of $25 or more to the Greenville
Tech Foundation to be entitled to full benefits
of membership, to vote, and/or hold office.
Student members shall have given an
annual gift of $10 or more to the Greenville
Tech Foundation to be entitled to benefits
of membership (excluding discounts at the
Greenville Tech Bookstore and Continuing
Education courses at the Buck Mickel Center).

Greenville Tech has been a part of the fabric of this community since 1962. Together the college

industries, and supporting existing operations with educational programs that promote success.
