On Earth as It Is in HeavenThe Tasks of the College of Teachers in Light of the Founding Impulse of Waldorf Education.Roberto TrostliIntroductionAt the center of the Waldorf school standsthe College of Teachers. What is the College?What are its tasks? Who serves on the College?Why is it important for a Waldorf school tohave a College? The answers to these questionswill help us understand the mission and tasks ofthe Waldorf school.In this work, I will address thesefundamental questions about the College inlight of the founding of the first Waldorf schoolin 1919. I will also share some ideas about theCollege that I have developed in nearly threedecades of working with Colleges. I hope thatmy work will inspire others to delve deeplyinto these questions and to develop their ownperspectives.What is the College of Teachers andwhat are its tasks?A Waldorf school is more than justanother independent school that provides adevelopmental education. It is an organizationthat seeks to allow the spiritual impulses of ourtime to manifest on earth in orderto transform society. The groupthat is primarily responsiblefor recognizing and realizingthis mission is the College ofTeachers. The College does soby working in two realms: thematerial and the spiritual. Thisessential feature was revealedduring the preparatory course forthe founding of the first Waldorfschool in Stuttgart, Germany. Byexamining what Rudolf Steiner presented in TheOpening Address and The College Founding, wewill begin to sense how the College can bridgeand balance the worlds of matter and spirit.(These texts are included in the Appendix.)A Waldorf school isan organization thatseeks to allow thespiritual impulses ofour time to manifeston earth in order totransform society.The Opening Address andThe College FoundingThe Opening Address was given by RudolfSteiner on the evening of August 20, 1919,prior to the preparatory course for the teachersof the first Waldorf school. In The OpeningAddress, Rudolf Steiner identified two majorgoals for the school:(1) to achieve a renewal of modern spirituallife by reforming and revolutionizing theeducational system, and(2) to demonstrate the effectiveness ofanthroposophy through a new art ofeducation.The Opening Address also described howteachers could work towards these goalsindividually and collectively in a ÒteachersÕrepublic.ÓThe College Founding was given thefollowing morning as the opening to the firstlecture in the series now known as the Studyof Man. There Rudolf Steiner spoke againabout the goals of the Waldorfschool and the tasks of theteachers, highlighting the cosmicimportance of the schoolÕsfounding. At the center ofThe College Founding, RudolfSteiner presented The CollegeImagination, which shows theteachers how to work with thebeings of the Third Hierarchy: theAngels, the Archangels, and theArchai.With these two addresses Rudolf Steinerestablished the College as the place in theschool where teachers work on earthly andspiritual tasks.
