We deliberately keptthe size of the year 8 cohort down toenable us to balance the large numbersin Years 11 and 12. Those strategiescame to nothing as we are still havinglarge numbers of applicants forenrolment across the board. Already ourenrolments are at 2050, and I believe wewill probably exceed our ceiling of 2100.The complexity lies in balancing numbersacross the various enrolment categories,as that balance has a direct effect on thepositive culture of the school. One key to this school’s success is thatthe students are here because they wantto be here, not because they have to behere. That is an essential component ofthe balance I referred to above.QCS Test provisional dataThe Queensland Core Skills provisionalresults are to hand. The QCS test ranksour Year 12 students against othersacross the State, and is a major factor inassigning OPs that are used to selectstudent for tertiary offers. In theenvironment in which we operate, smallgains don’t come easily. Having saidthat, I am happy to report that there isan overall increase in the students’results in this year’s QCS test. Someother snippets from the provisional dataare:The school has seen an increase in thenumber of our students achieving a B onthe test and a decrease in the number ofC’s – which suggests that we have beenable to move some of our C students upto B. There has been a decrease in thenumber of E’s on the test.• Our performance in the Writing taskis slightly up compared to last year.• Our 5 top performing subjects (largegroups) on the QCS test are – EnglishExtension, Philosophy and Reason,Maths C, Modern History andChemistry• State wide Boys perform better thanGirls, however, at BSHS, the Girlsperform better on the test than theBoys.Changes to Year Level Coordinator andDeputy Principal LocationsIn 2008 the Deputy Principals and YLCsresponsible for each Year level are asfollows:Year 8Year 9Year 10Year 11Year 12YLC Ms WallDP Mr. Lawlocated in A BlockYLC Ms PattonDP Ms Headlocated in A BlockYLC Mr. McMahonDP Ms Underwoodlocated in M BlockYLC Mr. ServiceDP Ms Underwood(assisted by Mrs. Richards)located in M BlockYLC Mr. BestDP Mrs. Hooperlocated in M BlockYear 10 students will still be based onthe vulture Campus.Pastoral Care changesThe above arrangement has been forcedupon us by the restrictions inherent in apastoral care system that has four DPs, 4YLCs, five year levels and a need to keepat least two DPs on the one campus foradequate duty of care management. Weare also at the stage where it is notpossible for one YLC to look after a cohortof 450+ students adequately. We are using the first half of 2008 toexplore a change in the pastoral carestructure. While the current structure isunwieldy, its element of DP and YLC tolook after each year level is working verywell. To provide better support to bothstudents and YLC, we are exploring theconcept of a vertical House System ofeight Houses, eight House Masters (intowhich the current five YLC positions willbe absorbed) with a DP to look after twohouses. At the moment the proposal falls intothe “it looks like a good idea at the time”category but we will ask lots of questionsand move towards a changed structure intime for timetabling that starts aroundAugust next year.BRISBANEState HighNEWSLETTER

WWW.BRISBANESHS.EQ.EDU.AU/NEWS STATE HIGH NEWS - PAGE 2BRISBANEState HighNEWSLETTERMr. Simpson’s retirementI could not let pass the opportunity tonote that Mr. Simpson has announced thathe will be retiring at the end of this year(2007).Mr. Simpson has been at BSHS since1966. He is, to my mind, one of the verybest teachers with whom I have had theprivilege of working. In his youth the height of technologicaladvance would have been a new slate andslate pencil. Today, on the eve of hisretirement, Mr. Simpson is valued as oneof the most IT savvy teachers in theschool, both for classroom applications andschool administration applications. The example of his professional practiceand genuine care for students exemplifiesthe commitment and integrity thatattaches to this profession. With best wishesDAVID SUTTON, PRINCIPAL2008 Special DatesOffice Opening Time 2008The school office will re-open for 2008on Thursday 24 January from 8.00am –4.00pm. We will be re-using much ofthe existing P Block Sports Centre toensure sustainability for the project.• The sprung wooden floor of the existingSports Centre will be an ideal floor forDance and Performing Arts.• Drama and Media will be housed in theexisting buildings, with Music going intoa new building at right angles to theexisting building, across the existingtennis courts.• We have taken our inspiration for theDrama spaces from The Loft at the QUTCreative Arts Precinct. We wanted tobreak away from the concept of anauditorium dominating the functionalityof the building. This design givesmaximum functionality and flexibility toenhance the teaching of Drama andDance.• Another priority was to promoteconvergence between the PerformingArts and the Visual Arts, and within thePerforming Arts, convergence betweenDrama, Dance and Music.• As an example of convergence, each ofthe walls of the performance space willbe painted white, with the capacity toproject still or moving images onto thewalls for scenery, backdrops etc as partof the performance. This will require theinvolvement of both visual arts andperformance students.• Our priority has been to focus on theprovision of the best lighting and soundbackbone “behind the walls” that wecould afford. We will augment the newset-up by using existing lights andspeakers, etc, with the schoolpurchasing more as needs arise. Thatseemed the most logical way of futureproofingthe system.• We have focussed on multi-use ofspaces. The performance space will splitinto five teaching spaces; the largeensemble practice room can be used asa recital area; the foyer can be dividedinto three teaching spaces; the light andsound box on the mezzanine floordoubles up as a media teaching space. Our plan is also to use the large foyer asan alternative teaching space during thenormal course of the school day.• The walkway across Cordelia Street willcome into the top of the building. It willbe an entirely school-dedicatedwalkway, (i.e. no public access) which isgood for security. There will be adisabled lift and stairs to access thebuilding and also the Merivale Campus.• The walkway will have a minimumclear width of about 3m. The trafficconsultants advise that is anappropriate width. We will continue touse the existing walkway, and also thepedestrian crossing at the corner ofGlenelg and Cordelia Streets. The newwalkway has been constructed keepingin mind that this pedestrian crossingmay not be available in the future. Wehave not yet finalised the location ofthe oval end of the walkway.• There will be covered links to allbuildings on both campuses.• Brisbane City Council is proposing, aspart of the Hale Street Mitigationworks, to provide a new pedestriancrossing across Merivale Street in themiddle of the block. This will replace aproposed grade-separated bridgeacross Merivale Street. Council will beundertaking footpath widening worksat intersections to provide largerassembly points on the footpaths, andto shorten the travel distance acrossthe road to assist traffic movements.• Set down and pick up areas are locatedin Ernest and Cordelia Streets. ErnestStreet will also be utilised as a Schoolbased bus set down area.• An area set aside for a futureamphitheatre has been planned nearthe corner of Ernest and CordeliaStreets. High barrier fencing will helpprotect the students from noise andemissions.• We have sought to develop a mallrunning from the lifts/stairs leadingfrom the Cordelia overpass, throughthe middle of the campus, to thepedestrian crossing on Merivale Street. We are trying to give a living heart tothe campus.• The eventual demolition of the currentPerforming Arts block will provide agood entrance to the Merivale Campusoff Glenelg Street, with off-streetparking.• We have designed the facility so that iteasily lends itself to community use, atthe same time providing security forspaces that are school-only use.Sports CentreQuotes are being obtained for a newtrophy case for the centre. The Seniors of2007 have raised enough money to fundthis project for which the schoolcommunity sincerely thanks them.‘Old’ Canteen Area – Vulture StreetShadeThe Year 8 students are making excellentuse of the refurbished area. The purchaseof tables, chairs and bins for this area bythe Ladies Auxiliary has certainly beenappreciated by the students.DAVID SUTTON, PRINCIPALCHRIS COLLINS, PROJECT OFFICER

It is a pleasure tocoach and work with you!DIANA BLACK, M.I.C. FENCINGChaplain’s ReflectionsA number of years ago when I was arelief teacher, I used to seek additionalwork within the Christmas holiday break. One year a friend approached me with anexciting job proposal. She offered me aposition for the first half of the holidays inwhich I could consume as much ‘crackling’chocolate as I could eat and take photos. It sounded fantastic but what she didn’ttell me was that I would need to dress likean elf within a packed shopping centre andtake photos of strange men wearing redsuits. I also had to promote an extensiverange of photographic packages with keyrings, frames and a variety of additionalextras.Sometimes the celebration of Christmascan lose meaning in our lives when we arefaced with the plethora of commercialsand catalogues announcing Christmassales. People can sometimes lose the focusof why this event is important to them andinstead find themselves racking upenormous credit debt on expensive, advertised items, out of duty rather thangenerosity.Different people find meaning in thecelebration in different ways. To manypeople, Christmas is about giving gifts andshowing kindness to people whom youvalue in your life. Many people celebratethe occasion with generous acts. Manychildren enjoy the occasion for its‘fantasy’ and traditions (maybe even theyearly Christmas photos at the shoppingcentre taken by an unfortunate elf). Toother people, Christmas represents a timeto celebrate family and enjoy time with

It is a time to eat great food, chat, sing carols and then relax the nextday in front of the Boxing Day cricket test.Somewhere beneath the tinsel andChristmas catalogues we find a fascinatinghistorical event, an event that shaped thewestern calendar and had a profoundeffect upon the world. The historical andoriginal source of the Christmascelebration is the birth of Jesus. For me,this event embodies many of theaforementioned qualities that peopleenjoy about Christmas: family, generosity, celebration and giving. To many people, this birth represents an incrediblygenerous gift to the world. This Christmas, I encourage you to find aquiet moment away from the bustle ofsales and commercials, to reflect on whatChristmas means in your life.ANDREW FOLEY, CHAPLAINBRISBANEState HighNEWSLETTER
