Vision >Does <strong>the</strong> <strong>older</strong> person have difficulty with:recognis<strong>in</strong>g people, particularly <strong>in</strong> unexpectedsituations?bright light, low light, or both?read<strong>in</strong>g facial expressions?f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y have lost without us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>irhand, or ask<strong>in</strong>g someone else to f<strong>in</strong>d it <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m?read<strong>in</strong>g books, <strong>the</strong> newspaper, <strong>the</strong>ir watch faceor watch<strong>in</strong>g television?mov<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>in</strong> unfamiliar places, or <strong>in</strong> familiarplaces if <strong>the</strong>y have changed?*Do <strong>the</strong>y often say <strong>the</strong>y ‘need new glasses’?*The difficulties with mov<strong>in</strong>g around may also be related too<strong>the</strong>r physical issues, so careful observation is needed here.If you have ticked two or more of <strong>the</strong>se criteria,<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>older</strong> person’s vision should be assessed.


Hear<strong>in</strong>g >Does <strong>the</strong> <strong>older</strong> person:often ask people to repeat what <strong>the</strong>y have said?fail to hear when someone knocks at <strong>the</strong> door orr<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong> bell?compla<strong>in</strong> of people ‘mumbl<strong>in</strong>g’ or speak<strong>in</strong>g tooquickly?have difficulty hear<strong>in</strong>g when several peopleare present?have difficulty hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> television, radio or music,and perhaps needs <strong>the</strong> volume turned up high?have difficulty understand<strong>in</strong>g unfamiliar people?have problems us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> telephone, and perhapsprefers not to?Do you have to speak loudly or dist<strong>in</strong>ctly, even <strong>in</strong>quiet situations <strong>in</strong> order to be understood?If you have ticked two or more of <strong>the</strong>se criteria,<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>older</strong> person’s hear<strong>in</strong>g should be assessed.
