THE DESTINATION: GRAND CAYMANThe Cayman Islands is recognized as the birthplace of the modern sport ofrecreational scuba diving. In 1957, the legendary Bob Soto opened the Caribbean'sfirst dive shop on Grand Cayman. Formed by limestone outcroppings, the islandslack rivers and streams because of the porous nature of limestone; hence, thesurrounding Caribbean waters have outstanding visibility. And since this islandhas become the quintessential Caribbean destination for divers, development alongSeven Mile Beach has produced an array of excellent restaurants and beautifulresorts.GeographyTime ZoneLanguageDress CodeCurrencyThe Cayman Islands lie approximately 480 miles south of Miami. By far the largestof the three islands, Grand Cayman is 76 square miles, and reaches a maximumelevation at East End of 60 feet. The Cayman Islands are in the Eastern Time Zone (the same as New York) yearroundand do not observe Daylight Saving Time. The official language in Grand Cayman is English.Shorts, rather than long pants, are generally acceptable at restaurants. Some of theupscale restaurants may require slacks for evening dinner. The Cayman Islands has its own currency—the CI dollar. Currency is issued innotes with denominations of CI$100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 and coins valued at 25,10, 5 and 1 cent. The CI dollar has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar ofCI$1.00 equals US$1.25. Or, the US dollar equals CI $.80.You do not need to exchange US dollars into local currency—the US dollar isaccepted throughout the island. Additionally, major credit cards (with theexception of the Discover Card) and traveler’s checks are widely accepted.Canadian dollars and pounds sterling can be exchanged for CI dollars at localbanks.NOTEWORTHY: Costs for ActivitiesWe advise you to pay close attention to the exchange rate noted above. Thewater is originally pumped from the sea and then purified by reverse osmosis. There is an increased risk of developing decompression sickness when divers areexposed to elevations of 8,000 feet (the equivalent of commercial airline cabinpressures) too soon following a dive.Divers should avoid flying or exposure to altitudes over 1,000 feet for a minimumof 12 hours after surfacing from a single no-decompression dive. After repetitivedives or multiple days of diving, a diver should wait a minimum of 18 hours toreduce the risk of decompression sickness.Last Revised 4/1/2014 Page 11of 21

Visibility extends past 100 feet in the crystal waters. You can dive reefs or wrecks, walls or caves. You can hover in the warm watersbeside schools of stingrays. In all, the three islands offer several hundred excellentdiving spots. Certified divers can submerge more than 80 feet to the beginning ofplummeting coral walls and discover an entirely new world. In sites such as TrinityCaves (featured in the movie “The Firm”), there are coral tunnels and overhangs toswim through at almost 100 feet below the surface. Many of the best dive companies are accessible from the resort, so speaking with arepresentative or making a reservation is very convenient. The winds determine thediving location each day, so you may not be able to pick your spot. However, thedive masters are knowledgeable about dozens of sites, and should be able to find agreat dive regardless of the weather. Dive options include two-tank morning dives(departing at 9:00 a.m.), one-tank afternoon dives, night dives, and Stingray Citytrips.Beginners can take a resort course to experience the undersea beauty with a patientinstructor. You can also get certified during your vacation, a process that takesabout four days.We recommend contacting your concierge to make reservations as early as possiblefor trips during major holidays. This is probably the most popular attraction on Grand Cayman, and is great forkids. The dive spot is relatively shallow (about 12 feet) and lots of friendly stingraysswim all around divers, begging for food by brushing their bellies against handsand feet. Your tour leader will provide squid treats to feed the stingrays and easyto-followguidelines to ensure safe interaction. Snorkelers can also check out thestingrays at a waist-deep sandbar. This is about a 10-15 minute boat ride from ourprivate enclave.Last Revised 4/1/2014 Page 14of 21
