Problem-focused cop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is a cop<strong>in</strong>g process that is directed at alter<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

situation that is caus<strong>in</strong>g distress, direct<strong>in</strong>g attention<br />

toward the problem <strong>in</strong> an effort to prevent or control it<br />

The <strong>in</strong>dividual can engage <strong>in</strong> confrontational and/ or<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpersonal activity (which can sometimes take an<br />

aggressive mode)<br />

Emotion-focused cop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

these strategies are directed at manag<strong>in</strong>g distress rather<br />

than chang<strong>in</strong>g the problem situation. This category<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes n<strong>in</strong>e types (?) of strategies.<br />

Distanc<strong>in</strong>g and escape–avoidance strategies<br />

Selective attention strategies<br />

Acquiescence as a strategy (go<strong>in</strong>g with the flow of<br />

events, accept<strong>in</strong>g the situation<br />

<strong>Cop<strong>in</strong>g</strong> through social support<br />

Methodology<br />

The third category of strategies is based on support<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g and us<strong>in</strong>g social support resources. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual would be <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to seek out and <strong>in</strong>teract<br />

with others as one strategy to moderate stress.<br />
