Ellie Gonzalez ’14 Receives Multiple Athletic Awards!Ellie Gonzalez ’14 earned the title Girl Indoor Track Performer <strong>of</strong> the Year andBaltimore Sun’s <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Year! Ellie participates in <strong>Catholic</strong><strong>High</strong> athletics all school year with cross country, indoor track and field, andoutdoor track and field. After earning the Runner <strong>of</strong> the Year award for crosscountry last fall, she remained the top distance runner in indoor track thiswinter. She took both the 1,600 and 3,200 again in the IAAM championshipmeet last month! Ellie continues to show endless effort and dedication. Wayto go, Ellie, on letting your light shine!Hannah Grice ’16 Earned the Carson Scholar Award!Hannah Grice, a freshman at <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>, was honored for the second time as a Carson Scholar! CarsonScholarships are awarded to students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarianqualities. Carson Scholars must have a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through communityservice. <strong>The</strong> winners receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their college education, a recognition package, andan invitation to attend an awards banquet. We congratulate Hannah on her hard-work and determinationto achieve this award for the second time!Megan Morales ’15 was <strong>High</strong>lighted in the<strong>Catholic</strong> Review!<strong>The</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> Review describedMegan as “wise beyond her years.” “With sports, I’m determined and motivatedto get my work done,” said Morales, who is a determined student athlete in the <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> community. She isalso very involved in her parish, as well as other activities that make her a very well-rounded individual.At <strong>Catholic</strong>, Megan holds a 3.7 GPA, takes honors courses and was inducted into the National Honor Societythis Spring. She is also a student ambassador and a member <strong>of</strong> Focus, our environmental club. In addition tobeing a leader in school and at church, Morales also steps up as a student athlete. She plays midfield and attackwith lacrosse, midfield and forward with field hockey, and runs the 1,600 and 800 meters for track.Mr. Bo Morris, <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong>’s field hockey and lacrosse coach and a math teacher, said when he thinks aboutMorales, “Competitive is the first thing that comes to mind, very determined.”Jennifer Klapka and Rebecca Miller Qualified for 2014Juniors, Jennifer Klapka and Rebecca Miller qualified to receive recognition in the 2014 National MeritProgram. Both students, with their selection index <strong>of</strong> 203 or above, are high performers who have shownoutstanding academic potential. <strong>The</strong>y are among the 50,000 highest scoring participants <strong>of</strong> 1.5 million programentrants. <strong>The</strong> National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships.<strong>High</strong> school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National MeritScholarship. Three Seniors were Awarded Scholarships to UMBC’sCWIT Program!Seniors, Sydney Menikheim, Samantha Sullivan, and Megan Lynch were awarded the largest monetaryscholarship possible for in-state students as part <strong>of</strong> the CWIT (<strong>The</strong> Center for <strong>Women</strong> In Technology) programat UMBC. <strong>The</strong> CWIT Scholars Program is a merit-based scholarship program for talented undergraduatesmajoring in computer science, information systems, business technology administration (witha technical focus), computer engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical/biochemical/environmentalengineering, or a related program at UMBC.All three students will take advantage <strong>of</strong> the scholarship at UMBC in the fall. Mr. Steve Cole, the STEMCoordinator at <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> said, “<strong>The</strong>se awards speak highly <strong>of</strong> their ability and accomplishments and,in turn, reflect well on TCHS <strong>of</strong> Baltimore. Again we have another example <strong>of</strong> the many things <strong>of</strong> whichwe have to be proud.” We thank Mr. Cole and STEM teachers for motivating and inspiring these excellentstudents in the field <strong>of</strong> technology.Two Students Receive the Girl Scout Gold AwardCrysta Draayer and Rebekah Kempske have received theGirl Scout Gold Award, qualifying the highest achievement aGirl Scout can earn. Crysta’s project improved the EdgeleyGrove Park. She weeded the playground and gardens as well asupdated information at the trail heads. In addition, Crysta setup an orienteering program to improve hikers’ skills and to givevisitors a new experience.Rebekah created two exercise and cooking classes a month forSt. Joseph’s Nursing Home residents. She also wrote biographies<strong>of</strong> the residents so they could reflect and share stories. Rebekahleft copies <strong>of</strong> her exercise and cooking plans at St. Joseph’s to beused in the years to come.<strong>The</strong> Ghost <strong>of</strong> Rhodes Manor<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>High</strong> presented the spring drama, <strong>The</strong>Ghost <strong>of</strong> Rhodes Manor on Friday, March 22 andSaturday, March 23. “<strong>The</strong> Ghost <strong>of</strong> Rhodes Manor isa funny mystery, and the characters are... shall wesay...unique?
