Wide Open Race For Girls Volleyball Honors
The 2011 Northern Athletic
Conference volleyball field features
defending sectional
champion in Class B Malone,
Class C Potsdam and Class D
Chateaugay which all
advanced to state tournament
play in 2011.
OFA
Implementing a new system
while replacing a two-time All-
Northern Conference setter is a
formidable challenge for any girls
volleyball team. A challenge which
OFA has accepted with a spirited
determination according to Coach
Sue McLean.
OFA will be looking to replace
three All-NAC performers in setter
Charrette Spooner and hitters
Kirstie Fredericks and Emily
McLellan.
“Everyone is working hard and
is very focused on learning a new
system,” said Coach McLean who
lost seven players from last year’s
squad which finished in a threeway
tie for the NAC West Division
title at 8-2, but does return seven
veterans.
OFA looks to senior captains in
libero April Mashaw, middle hitter
Sarah Weir and setter/opposite
hitter Brittany Redmond to provide
outstanding leadership.
“April is controlling the defensive
effort while Brittany has taken
on the role of lead setter while
helping to develop two junior setters.
Sarah is our leading middle
hitter and has improved her hitting
ability as well as leaping ability
over last year, so I look to her to
pick up more kills and blocks,”
said Coach McLean.
Second year juniors Felicia and
Brittany Barr are also showing the
athleticism and smooth skills to
step into lead roles. Felicia Barr
returns to a starting outside hitter
spot with the total package to
become one of the NAC’s premier
attackers. Brittany Barr will start
opposite of her sister and bring a
strong, accurate serve into the
lead spot in the rotation. Also
returning are senior middle hitters
Rachel Fisher, a key blocker in the
defense, and Marissa Young, a
valuable situational server.
Moving up to the varsity from a
championship junior varsity team
are three juniors in setter/opposite
hitters Jade Casey and Olivia
Bender and a very athletic hitter in
Katrina Couperus.
SALMON RIVER
Five seniors are being called
upon to display their experience
and leadership to a Salmon River
varsity volleyball team that finished
the 2010 campaign with a
14-4 overall record, 7-3 in the
league.
“This year, I will be looking for
leadership coming from my
seniors,” stated Shamrocks
coach Nicole Deshaies.
“They have played together
now for three or more years. If
they communicate and focus on
the court, they will be strong,”
Deshaies continued.
The seniors the SRC coach is
counting upon are Leslee Loran,
Kiesha Cook, Brittany Grenon,
Emma Phillips and Kara Marshall.
Couple that with returning
juniors Kasennakohe David and
Nicole Smoke and the Shamrocks
look to be a formidable foe
for any NAC squad.
The aforementioned players
will be replacing second team
All-Northern Alicia Francis along
with Krissy Tremblay, both of
whom graduated in the spring of
2011.
“I am looking for the team to
be consistent,” added Deshaies.
“I am also looking for our team to
build a strong defense.”
Also on the 2011 squad are
juniors Cassandra Boardway,
Jackie Benedict and Kaitlyn Pickering
along with sophomore
Erica Martin.
POTSDAM
Coach Julia Pahler has lost
several top seniors but welcomes
15 players after a strong season
in 2011 which included a sectional
championship and trip to
the state tournament.
Team members include juniors
Amy Arno, Hailey Bonno, Taylor
Bonno, Jessica Buckley, Jessica
Burns, Bridget Parks, Elizabeth
Smith, BreAnna Stephenson,
Olivia Stitzer and Kelsey Travis;
sophomores Savannah Bondellio,
Katie Burke, Clarissa Mitchell
and Victoria Mondragon; and
freshman Sarah Vivlamore.
MADRID-WADDINGTON
After a NAC West Division
Regular Season Volleyball
Championship, Madrid-Waddington
will be rebuilding this season
under coach Troy Creurer.
The Jackets lost Kristin King,
Ashley Beldock, Kayla Vallance,
Kristin Miller, Megan Parmeter,
Jessica Reed, Olivia Blackmore,
Shauna Vallance, Kayla Vallance,
Dee Ibey, and Marina Zeledon
to graduation.
“We are returning one senior
from last year's varsity team,
Ashleigh Bracy. She will be
counted on to be our captain and
floor leader, during what I consider
to be a developmental year
for the program,” said Creurer
who takes over the program from
Laurinda Stockwell.
“We have three juniors in
Schiler Ashley, Logan Barkley
and Drew Harris, none of whom
have played before this year. So I
expect the learning curve to be
steep for those players.
Up from the JV level and
expected to see lots of court time
according to Creurer are Hannah
Austin (Hitter Libero), Britanni
Dawley (Hitter-Setter), and
Janelle Trombley (Hitter-Libero).
Freshman Jennifer King (Hitter-
Setter), Dia Richards (Hitter) and
Sophia Roome (Hitter) round out
the team.
“The long term success of the
program will rest with these
young players. I am looking forward
to a season that sees a dramatic
improvement from our first
day to our last and success will
not be measured in wins and
losses,” said Creurer.
CANTON
Coach Carla Wentworth
opened the new season with several
different faces in the lineup.
“It’s definitely a rebuilding year.
We lost a lot of key seniors. There
are a lot of shoes to fill,” said
Wentworth.
Returning with experience are
hitter Gabby Hopkins-Betters,
middle-hitter Michelle Barkley
and setter Tara Facey. The rest of
the roster includes first-year players
and those up from coach Rob
Brown’s JV team which had a
strong season in 2010.
Other team members include
seniors Carli Baldwin (middle hitter)
and Isreal Tyler (middle hitter);
juniors Becky Backus, Becky
(middle hitter), Cassie Brooks
(outside hitter), Serena Coffey
(middle hitter), Sara Olin (middle
hitter), Sarah Sanger (middle hitter),
Erica Whinnery (middle hitter)
and Kaeli Mace (ouutside hitter)
along with sophomore
Cianna Willmart (middle hitter).
MALONE
Coach Michelle Thomas must
replace four starters from last
years’ team as Chelsey Marshall
(39 points, 19 aces, and 54 kills)
and Alison Poupore (90 points,
34 aces, and 30 kills) are the
lone returning starters.
“We lost Amanda Gadway, the
League MVP and Patti Baldwin
Award winner, Ashley Gadway
and Stephanie Stone both First
Team All NAC’s and Chelsea
Metcalf and Stephanie Haas -
both Second Team All NAC’s.
Rachel Lamica, a tenth grader
who was moved up at the end of
last season, is very talented and
has a lot of potential,” said
Thomas.
“I feel will be strong, but it may
take a couple weeks before we
can get the kinks worked out.
Coach Thomas roster includes:
Anna Dievendorf, Chelsea Donais,
Erin Scott, Kristyn Reynolds,
Alison Poupore, Chelsey Marshall,
Rachel Lamica, Jackalyn
Boyer, Kayla Allen, Courtney
LaPage, Brooke Johnson, Natalie
Printup and Lileth Meunch.
EDWARDS-KNOX
E-K coach Jessica Friot
returns for her second season
and must replace four starters.
“We are a very young team.
Brittany Klock and Nicole Hendricks
are our only starters
returning,” said Friot.
The roster includes: Brittany
Klock (Hitter), Kirsten Phelps
Malone Gridmen Look To Improve On Last Year
By JOHN GOKEY
MALONE – The Franklin
Academy varsity football team
seeks to improve upon its 2010
regular-season record of 4-3, 5-4
overall, for the 2011 campaign.
Tough to do with the loss of
key position players such as
quarterback (Jordan Cosgrove),
running back (Darren Fullum,
Brad Doe and Jason Stepnoski)
and linemen (Andrew Poupore,
Sam Moore, Brandon Lavoie
and Cody Gibson).
The Malone team will witness
junior Mitchell Gallagher
take the reigns of the gridiron
group, calling the offensive
plays at quarterback, while also
directing the defense from the
middle linebacker position. Gallagher
spent the 2010 season
with the varsity as a sophomore,
gaining needed experience
for this season and next.
Gallagher completed 19 passes
By DAVE SHEA
OGDENSBURG - There are
rebuilding projects and there is
the wholesale reconstruction
which was ongoing as the OFA
Football team recently completed
its second week of preseason
practice.
Head Coach Matt Tessmer
and assistants Charlie
McCormick, Tony Williams and
Brett Monnat were engineering
plans to replace the leadership
provided by one of the most
successful senior classes in
school history. A senior class
which led the 2010 Blue Devils
to 10 straight wins and regular
season and postseason Class B
honors
Six of the graduated seniors
combined on a 27-5 record and
four of those seniors: running
back Eric Barr (19), quarterback
Jared Morrow (13), slotback
Joel King (11) and Kris
Folsom (9) combined to score 51
touchdowns last fall.
“We have to replace almost
all of our skill people and the
strength of this year’s team will
be in the line,” said Tessmer.
“Our line play should be very
good and we have a lot of very
good athletes who are working
very hard. We are looking at a
lot of people at different positions
and this is a very good
group.”
Junior Nate Angel is getting
a very long look as the leading
candidate to follow Morrow
who put up astounding total
for 263 yards with three touchdowns.
Junior John Picaro is
expected to be the back-up
quarterback, but will see more
action as a wideout. Picaro will
compete with senior Ryan
Jacques (1 rec-26-yards, TD)
and juniors Cody Collins, J.P.
King, Dylan Fleury, James
Shattick and the speedy Harvey
Smith for the wideout spots.
Stepping into the backfield will
be returning players Taylor Hilyard
(71 carries- 325 yards, 2
TD’s), Daryn Johnston (9-9),
Zach Peck (17-161, TD) and
Korey Prue (12-55, TD) as varsity
newcomers Shawn Mulverhill
and Tryek Sneed attempt to
break into the starting lineup.
Replacing the four graduated
linemen shouldn’t be all that
difficult for the FA coaching
staff of Greg Marshall, Cory
West and Brian Doe, as the
offensive numbers as a threeyear
starting quarterback. Morrow,
who has moved on to
Hartwick University, threw for
19 touchdowns and ran for 13
scores as a senior.
“Nate Angel is throwing the
ball well and has worked very
hard,” said Tessmer who looks
for co-captain Christian Lesperance,
a senior running back
and record-setting sprinter in
track-and-field, to lead the
emergence of a new group of
playmakers in the offense.
The team’s other captains
are two-way linemen Brad
Seguin and Dave Dalton and
split end-linebacker Zach Grenier.
Other seniors counted
upon to fill the leadership roles
are: Nick Steenkamer (RB/DB),
Andrew LeBeau (OL/DL), Marv
Petell (SE/DB) and Nick Crawford
(SE/DB). Second year
juniors coming off fine rookie
campaigns are: Zach Sharpe
(RB/LB), Christian Simmons
Huskies return a solid core of
bulk up front. Returning for
their senior season will Austin
Kerr, Curtis Beaudry, Matt Cooley,
Brandon Picaro, Mike Sharrow
and Doug Marshall.
Kesley Head, Cody Prue,
Robert Shaw and Duncan Marshall
will attempt to break into
the starting lineup and have
been working as a unit with the
returning linemen to solidify
the offensive line.
Ends that will help in the
offensive scheme will be the
Dunleavy brothers, Austin (6-
76) and Jon, as well as Devin
Fleury and Jason Twigg.
Defense seemed to be a problem
for the Huskies in 2010, as
they surrendered 164 points
during the season. In the games
that the FA team lost, they gave
up 50 points to Saranac Lake,
40 points to OFA and 24 points
to Potsdam, during the regular
OFA Football Faces Rebuilding Season
(OL/DL) and Jake Garrison
(OL/LB). Another junior in
Dave Troiano (OL/DL) who
missed all of last season undergoing
successful treatments for
Hodgins Lymphoma and he
will be a major addition. A very
versatile second-year sophomore
in Josh Liebstein will see
action at split end and defensive
back while developing his
quarterback skills.
A junior class with excellent
credentials includes: another
three-position player in Alex
Farrell (QB, SE, LB), Konnor
Murdock (SE/DB), Paul Mallette
(SE/DB), Nick Perrigo
(RB/DB), Hunter Planty
(RB/LB), John Morrison
(OL/DL), D.J. Swan (OL/DL)
and Nate Sarkin (OL/DL).
Promising sophomores moving
up from the JV level are: Dylan
Hoover (RB/DB), Jon Tayler
(SE/LB), Keegan Clark
(OL/DL) and Kevin Goolden
(OL/DL).
season, and 22 points to the
Sandstoners in the Class A
playoff game.
Setting the tone up front on
the defensive side of the ball
will be returning players Doug
Marshall, Dalton Patterson,
Brandon Picaro, Korey Prue
and Kellan Wheeler. Newcomers
Alex Charland, Matt Ellison,
Kelsey Head, Danny
Sanchez and Steve Watkins are
working hard to earn a starting
spot. Joining Gallagher in the
battle for a linebacker spot are
Kerr, Hilyard, Johnston,
Charles Debyah, Dylan Fleury,
Cameron Guerin, Mulverhill,
Shaw and Sneed.
The defensive backfield will
miss the quickness of Cosgrove,
but the FA coaching staff looks
to Smith to step into his spot.
Also looking to gain a starting
role in the defensive backfield
are Jacques and Peck, as well
as King, Shattick, Nate Monette,
Cody Boyea and Cody
Collins.
The Huskies open at home on
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
MASSENA - Looking ahead to the 2011 Northern Conference
season, Massena Central varsity football coach has no interest in
looking back to last year.
After seeing the Raiders struggle through low numbers and
serious injuries to a 2-7 overall record, you can’t really blame
him.
“It was a rough one but we have a great group of kids this year
and we’re putting last year behind us,” said coach Anthony
Diagostino. “This is definitely a younger group. We like the way
the guys are working hard in practice and we’re pretty
impressed with how they’ve performed during the different
drills.”
“And,” he added, “our numbers are up from last year, which is
great.”
Diagostino enters his fourth season at the Raider football
helm with a team that features a solid core of 12 veterans and
another 19 newcomers hoping to make an impact at the varsity
level.
Returning seniors being counted on for their leadership
include; Josh Blanchard (RB/LB), Thomas Boudreau (OL/DL),
Cody Coggeshall (RB/LB), Trevor Convertini (SE/DB), Brayden
Cunningham (OL/DL), James Delosh (RB/DB), Josh Miller
(QB/LB), Troy Myers (QB/DB), Johnny Square (RB/DB) and
Arrow Tigglear (SE/DB). Veteran juniors Jordan Hart and Kioweren
Rourke are also expected to anchor the Massena hopes on
both sides of the trenches.
Varsity newcomers hoping to earn playing time include;
seniors - Jake Beebe (SE/DB), Joe Clute (OL/DL), Collins Jacobs
(SE/DB) and Bradley Mayette (TE/LB), juniors - Tanner Ashlaw
Skill Position Replacements Key Potsdam Football Hopes
BY JOHN TURCOTTE
POTSDAM - If Potsdam Central is to
repeat as Section 10 Class A football
champions, the Sandstoners will have do
it without Section 10 rushing leader Zac
Linsky and quarterback-team leader
John Coleman who have taken their athletic
skills to the next level.
Potsdam is led by 9th-year head coach
and former Sandstoner quarterback, Jim
Kirka, who is working with a 33-player
roster which includes sophomores Will
Coleman and Shawn Clark. The two
youngsters are battling for the starting
nod at quarterback while seniors Jesse
Bradish (2nd Team All NAC) and
Dominic Centofanti look to fill the void
left by Linsky at the tailback position.
Coleman is considered cool under pressure
and Clark is a very good passer with
a good release.
“We lost a lot of skill players and some
of the offensive line, but the kids worked
very hard in the off-season and it’s a
chance for other guys to step up,” said
coach Kirka.
“(Senior) Josh Adams (First Team All
NAC) is a very good tight end and (junior)
Preston Mason is a good tackle on both
sides of the ball. Defensively, we have several
starters back and we could be better
on defense than last year. The lineman
are working hard to continue our tradition
at Potsdam of strong line play.”
Other Potsdam seniors include Jacob
Moose (RB/LB), Zack Williams (OL/DL),
Sam Skufka (WR/DB), Cody Dominique
(DB), Liam Rice (WR), Ifem Ononye
(RB/LB), Jay Zenger (OL/DL), Hans
Kuno (DB), AJ Landi (RB/LB), Jordan
Sochia (RB/DL) and Brandon Sibley
(LB).
Other juniors include Jason Cardinal
(DB), Kyle Weems (WR/DB), Aaron Deon
(OL/DL), Aaron Chandler (OL/DL),
Kevin Jones (OL/DL), Garrett Kilgore
(RB/DB), Ian Drummatter (OL/DL),
Adam Lewis (RB/DB), Steven Lewis
(RB/DB), Jake Woods (TE/LB), Dan
Devine (WR/DB), Kyle Martin (OL/DL),
Tory Brown (DL) and Joe Boysk (DL).
Two other sophomores are Matt
Cincinnati (OL/DL) and Jacob Bryant
(WR/DB).
Potsdam will again have a merger
agreement with Norwood-Norfolk while
Madrid-Waddington has been added
late this summer as a merger school,
though no M-W students will compete
this year.
The Sandstoners will play all their
home games this season on Saturday
afternoons, rather than Friday night as
in the past, due to an electric usage
problem regarding the lights.
They kick off their season September
3 at home against Beekmantown starting
at 2 p.m.

Nautical Lady Raiders Geared
For Repeat Swimming Success
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
A veteran Massena Central varsity girls swim
team will be poised to show that a banner 2010
season was no fluke.
The Lady Raiders return 19 swimmers from
last year’s squad which went 10-0 in claiming the
NAC Division I regular season title before going
on to complete the championship sweep by gaining
a breakthrough win at the Section 10 Meet.
Heading into the 2011 season, Massena will
look to defend its NAC Division I title against a
field of capable challengers that includes Potsdam,
Canton and OFA. Competing for the Division
II banner this fall are St. Lawrence Central,
Salmon River, Franklin Academy, Gouverneur
and Edwards-Knox.
The regular season is slated to open Friday,
September 9. The 2011 Section 10 Championship
Meet is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, at
SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall.
DIVISION I
MASSENA CENTRAL
After guiding the Lady Raiders to their perfect season
in her first year at the varsity helm, Beth Mock
will look to produce a repeat performance with a team
that features a familiar cast of swimmers.
A strong core of senior leaders consists of Kayla
Devine, Nikki Carroll, Nicole Orlando, Katie
Bronchetti, Julie Welsch, Melissa Marlowe and Britney
FALL SPORTS PROFILE, 2011 Northern New York Newspapers • PAGE 71
New Coach At Canton;
FA Boys Pursue CC Repeat
John Casserly, the Dean of Section 10
cross country coaches for the past several
years, has stepped down after a long and
extremely successful run at Canton Central.
Casserly will remain as a volunteer assistant
in the Golden Bear program with Tom
Van dewater taking over as head coach.
“I thought it was a good time. Tom and I
have been working together a number of
years and it’s a good opportunity for me to
let go of the reigns,” said Casserly.
For sectionals and states this year, classifications
are as follows: Class B teams
include Canton, OFA and Malone; Class C
teams include Salmon River, Potsdam, and
Gouverneur while Class D teams include
Norwood-Norfolk, Brushton-Moira and Tupper
Lake.
The 2011 sectional meet will be held in
Canton while the state meet will be held
this year at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High
School in Central New York.
CANTON
The Canton boys are rebuilding and the
roster includes Jay Kepes, Jake Beaudette,
Jacob Gallup, Nick Archibald, Charles Ames
and Noah Roberts.
The Canton girls should be top contenders
led by veterans Chelsea Huyck and Laura
Pierce who are joined by Abby Hampson,
Shayla Williams, Rebecca and Gemma Del
Rossi, Jamie DiSalvo, Maria Ricalton, Grace
Brown and Laura Orosz.
OFA
OFA junior Alex Wood will run among the
elite of the section and leads Coach Chris
McRoberts’ boys squad which also includes
Andree Cole (jr), Tyler Knowlton (jr), Russell
Jaquith (jr), Spencer Lawrence (jr), Seth
Tebo (so), and Seth Montpelier (so).
Freshman Danyelle Steenkamer and Morristown
Central sophomore Kurstyn Mac-
Caulay lead the OFA girls team while
rounding out the team are Janel Fredericks
(sr), Liz Brennan (sr) and Julie Mitchell (sr).
MALONE
Last year, the Franklin Academy boys
cross country team finished with a perfect
10-0 league record, won all the league
invites, interdivisional races, and also
claimed the Section 10 title. That team also
placed at the state meet.
The returning of a solid core of runners
features two seniors, veteran runner Doug
Fitzgerald and newcomer Ross Barber.
Returning for their junior year will be
Conor Gordon, Morgan Marlow, Corey
Lamere and Rourk Marlow, all of whom are
expected to place consistently in the top
seven for the Huskies.
Joining Barber in vying for placing in the
top seven scoring spots are juniors Mike
Haas and Sam Holmes, and sophomores
Ben Schanck and Brennan Gervais
“The team is shaping up to be a state contender,”
stated FA coach Matt Tessier.
Meanwhile, Jeff Soper is at the helm of
the Franklin Academy girls varsity cross
country team.
The Lady Huskies finished second in the
league with a 7-1 record in 2010. Soper
believes that FA returns enough experience
to make a run at the sectional crown.
Returning with varsity experience are
sophomores Rebekkah Bond, who was
fourth at the sectionals last season, Carrie
Pomainville (10th), Brooke Bronner (14th),
Strong Numbers, Move To Class C Boost Canton Hopes
By JOHN TURCOTTE
CANTON - Austin Weakfall,
a former player and assistant
coach at St. Lawrence University,
begins his third year as
head football coach at Canton
Central after taking over the
Golden Bear program in 2009.
Coming off a 2-7 finish last
year, Canton has some of its
best numbers in recent years
with 32 in camp. Weakfall welcomes
back senior Zach Zeller
(First Team All NAC) to
anchor the tight end and linebacker
corps while junior veterans
Jay Proulx and Jack
Elberty are competing for the
starting nod at quarterback.
Seniors Nash Bessette and
Dan Holcomb are linemen to
watch on both sides of the ball
while classmate Eb Foote provides
speed at the running
back slot as the number of
Canton seniors on hand this
year has grown considerably
since last season.
“Finally we have guys who
have been in the program a
few years and understand our
offensive and defensive philosophy.
We’re getting some
junior and senior leadership,
some depth and continuity,
and at all levels the numbers
are growing,” said Weakfall
who likes what he’s seen of
several veterans in the early
going and looks for the seniors
to shine in their final year of
football.
“We have good team speed
at the skill positions and Jack
Elberty and Jay Proulx (Second
Team All NAC) will both
see time at quarterback. Jay is
a vocal leader and will also
play other positions on
offense. He’s our guy on both
sides of the ball. Defensively,
Zach Zeller is battling back
from injury and should be
with us by the third or fourth
game. Right now he’s like having
another coach on the field.
Nash Bessette has grinded it
out in the weight room and I
also look for a good year from
Dan Holcomb, he’s a bigger
version of Nash. Eb Foote is
fast, quick and shifty. He’s our
scatback.”
Other returners include
seniors Adam Widener
(OL/DL), Ryan Dean (FB/LB),
Pat McGaw (TE/LB), Josh
Smith (WR/DB) and Sam Wilson
(FB/LB).
Newcomers are senior
Nathan Roberts (OL/DL);
juniors Nicholas Snyder
(OL/DL), Jon Pinckney
(OL/DL), Josh Pierson
(WR/DB), Cody Peters
(WR/DB), Richard Martin
(FB/LB) and Nate Miller
(OL/DL); sophomores Justin
Thurber (WR/DB), Dathon
Thurber (WR/DB), Pat Thompson
(OL/DL), Ryan Denny
(RB/LB), Austin Herne
(OL/DL), Thomas Lumbard
(OL/DL) and Zach Markel
(OL/DL); and freshmen Payton
Vanbibber (RB/LB),
Hunter Yeardon (WR/DB),
SLC Football Young But Experienced
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
BRASHER FALLS - Underclassmen once
again dominate the St. Lawrence Central varsity
football team roster.
But that doesn’t mean the Larries head into
the 2011 Northern Conference season lacking
experience.
“We’re going to be young again but we have
quite a few kids back from last year who
gained a lot of valuable playing experience
and that should help out,” noted coach Bill
Scharf, who enters his third season at the varsity
helm.
“We’ve already noticed a difference in practice
this year. They’re picking things up more
quickly because it’s not new to them anymore
and we’ve been able to work more things in,”
he added.
The Larries, who went 1-8 overall in 2010,
only return one senior but 12 juniors on the
roster are back after making lead contributions
last fall. The rest of the 2011 lineup consists
of first-year sophomores and a pair of
seniors making their varsity debuts. The SLC
lineup will benefit from mergers with the
Brushton-Moira and Parishville-Hopkinton
Central school districts. Each neighboring district
is providing a pair of student-athletes
this fall.
Josh Gonzalez is the only returning senior
and will be counted on to anchor what is
expected to be a much improved offensive line
as a tackle. The core of junior veterans
includes Devon Euto, who took over as starting
quarterback by the middle of last season
and is slated to reprise his role as the top SLC
signal-caller, Camren Campeau (TE), Jessi
Greer (RB), Corey LaBarge (RB/WR), Brandon
LaShomb (OT), Kyle Montroy (C), Todd Ramsdell
(WR), Troy Ramsdell (OT), Triston Riley
(C), Cody Rogers (OL), Sean Rosia (OL) and
Tyler Smith (TE/RB).
Newcomers to the varsity ranks this season
include; seniors - Eric Deshane (DL) and Erny
Munford (TE/DL), juniors - Cody Burns (OG),
Charles Hartson (TE, DB), Cole LaFlesh (RB)
and Dakota Vallance (RB/WR), sophomores
Devon Agen (TE/RB), David Barney (OT),
Gavin Chase (OT), Adam Dishaw (DL), Eric
Hull (DL), Mike Burns (QB), Oden Robertson
(RB), Nathan Johnson (C/DL), David Plante
(RB/WR), Hunter Ramsdell (DT), Tayler
Richard (TE), Kris Tabor and Jacob St. Mary
(DB). Offensive tackle Chris Gray is the lone
freshman on the team.
“Our numbers are up and the competition
within the team has stepped up. Kids are
working hard to get starting jobs. They know
that the guy that puts in the extra effort is
going to have the edge,” noted Scharf.
“This year, we’re also more well-balanced.
The last couple of years, we’ve had either
strong linemen or strong running backs. We
have both this year,” he added.
The Larries, who will be competing in the
Class A Division along with Massena, Potsdam
and Franklin Academy this season, were
slated to make their debut, September 2, on
the road against Seton Catholic of Plattsburgh
but that game had been cancelled with the
announcement that Seton Catholic will not be
fielding a team.
According to Scharf, the Larries are not
likely to be able to find a replacement team
and will draw a bye, pushing their season
opener to Saturday, September 10, in Malone
against Class A rival Franklin Academy. Also,
for the first time in several years, the Larries
will be competing in the Section 10 Class A
playoffs this fall.
Garrison Barcomb (FB/LB)
and John Romanelli (OL/DL).
The Golden Bears open
their 2011 season on Friday,
September 2 with a nonleague
game at Lowville Academy.
Merger agreements have
been discontinued with
Heuvelton and Hermon-
DeKalb, so Canton moves
from
from Class A to Class C for
sectionals, joining OFA,
Saranac Lake, and Ausable
Valley in that division. Canton
will have a modified program
but will not field a JV team.
Assistant varsity coaches
include Bill Porter and Fred
Rycroft. Sparky Newman will
coach the modified team,
assisted by Dave Webster.
Gouverneur Football Relying
On Newcomers To Step Up
GOUVERNEUR- Entering the 2011 North Country Football
Conference Section 7-10 campaign, Gouverneur Central School
Head Coach Sean Devlin and his assistant Justin Young will be
looking for someone to fill the big shoes of the graduated Zach
Cummings, the team’s leading rusher and top defensive player.
Cummings gained 910 yards on 132 totes last fall and scored six
touchdowns at running back for the Wildcats who finsihed 3-5
overall, 3-4 in regular season play and 2-3 against Class B schools.
He also led the team in tackles.
Also graduated from the program are Kevin Fuller, Alex Wedlock,
Jared Knowlton, Richard Jesmer, Corey Prashaw, Don Whiteford,
Tyler Douglass, Richard McIntosh, Cameron LaPlant and
Dan Slate. Whiteford and Wedlock were the second and third leading
defenders and Jesmer was the top receiver.
“We lost some very good players,” said Coach Devlin. “We’re going
to be young. We only have seven or eight starters back from last
year’s team including four starting linemen. We’re not big but we’ll
have some quickness.”
Coaches Devlin and Young do return their starting quarterback
in Shane Gould. Gould passed for 376 yards going 30-for-66 on the
season with three touchdowns
“Shane played well last year at quarterback and junior running
back Levi Love had some nice plays as Zach’s backup last year, said
Devlin whose team also returns senior offensive-defensive linemen
Kyle Bigwarfe, Lucas Bulsiewicz, Benjamin Mulvaney, and Jacob
VanOrman; senior offensive lineman-linebacker Brenden Ward;
junior offensive-defensive lineman Brandon Washburn; senior
widereceiver-linebacker Nathan Guesford and junior runningbacklinebacker
Dustin Earlywine.
“Our linemen might not be big. But they can move well and
they’re athletic. Our game this season will be based on speed and
getting to the holes quick,” Devlin noted.
Newcomers to the team are: Hunter Ayen (Jr. DE/TE), Kacy
Barley (Jr. WR/DB), Justin Cummings (Jr. FB/LB), Curtis Fuller
(Jr. FB/LB), Troy Gates (Fr. TE/DE), Brandon Geer (Jr. OL/DL),
Joseph Hamilton (Jr. OL/DL), Mark Horne (Jr. QB/DB), Seth Moon
(Jr. OL/DL), Daniel Neuroth (Jr. OL/DL), Michael Roll (Sr. DL),
Ricky Sides (Sr. OL/LB), Tanner Spilman (Jr. RB/DE), Anthony
Way (Jr. RB/DB), Skyler Way (Sr. WR/DB), Aaron Wing (Sr.
OL/DE), and Cody Woods (Jr. WR/DB).
“This group has been fun to work with. They’re working hard
and looking to improve every day,” commented Devlin.
the North Division twice and right
now also has two non-league
“I feel good about having 16 for
year one. This is a good group of
up and taking ownership in
their team and good communication
on the field.”
CANTON
NAC Central Boys Soccer Boasts Strong Field
The NAC Central Division
for boys soccer will feature a
new look this fall but the level
the same heading into the
The Central Division features
defending Section 10
Class B champion Potsdam
and Class A champion Malone,
reigning regular season
champion OFA along with
Canton and Gouverneur.
OFA: OFA will show a new look as they
venture into a new look Central season.
“We will have a new look this season
because for the first time in my five years
we will enter the season without a proven
major scoring threat. And we lost a very
good group of seniors who were really
soccer- oriented as their favorite sport,”
said OFA Coach Matt Morley who must
goals, 13 assists), Brent Lalonde (2g-7a),
Paul LaPlante (2g-3a), Andy Rickett (2-1),
Gerry Guimond (2-1), and John Paul
Burns (1g-2a).
The Devils will also start the season
without one of the premier players in
Section 10 in Grant Prudhomme (18
goals, 11 assists) who opted to play his
senior year in prep school.
The new Central Division in
girls soccer in the Northern
Athletic Conference includes a
strong field including defending
Central Division champion
Potsdam, defending
Class A champion Massena
along OFA with Gouverneur
and Malone.
Massena: Coach Ryan Hayes begins
his fourth season at the helm of the
Raiders and must replace three very talented
players from last year’s club which
won the Class A championship and reach
the New York State Regional Finals in a
13-4-1 (overall) 12-1-1 (NAC Central) campaign.
“The strength of our team will be our
defending, conditioning, and ball control.
We are an experienced team as 12 players
have varsity experience. We are looking to
possess the ball and control the field of
play,” said Hayes after losing Nyssa
LaClair (1st Team NAC, 10 goals), Siera
Thomas Burke (2nd Team NAC), and
Coree Phillips (2nd Team NAC) to graduation.
Junior forward Dominique Valencius
was named First Team All NAC after scoring
10 goals and adding five assists.
Senior forward Taylor Romeo was also
selected First Team All NAC after scoring
nine goals and producing five assists. Also
figuring in last year’s scoring were returners
Morgan Albert (Sr-Fwd 1g, 2a), Kallie
Barnes (Sr-Def 3g, 1a)), Kylie Buckshot
(Sr-Mid 2g, 2a), Teresa Grigg (Sr-Mid 2g).
Other returners include: Emmalyn
Dupree (Sr-Def.), Erin Francis (Jr-Mid.),
Hanna Gleason (Sr.-Mid), Ellen Hurlbut
(Sr-Mid), Marissa Manley (Jr-Def), and
Ashley Ward (Sr-Def)
Looking to make a great first impression
at varsity are Kathleen Kassian (Jr-
Mid.), Carle Leary (Soph-Mid.), Courtney
Manley (Fresh-GK), Lidsay Martin (Jr-
Fwd.), Taylor Peets (Jr.-GK), Natalie
Pesold (Jr.-Mid), Stephanie Premo (Jr.-
Mid.), Stephanie Rogers (Jr.-Mid), Kaleigh
Zappia (Jr.-Def.)
“I consider myself to be very blessed
for the outstanding offensive players that
I have coached. We don't have a player
like that right now but we have a lot of
solid players and we will have to work
together to score our goals. This year's
team will be more defensive-oriented
than we were last season but we will still
be very competitive,” said Coach Morley.
Anchoring the Devils will be returning
defensive starters in seniors A.J. Missert
and Quinn Rufa and junior Alec Manke
and senior goaltender Matt Tolman who
gained valuable experience as last
year's backup keeper. Junior Gian Rufa
(10 goals) is the only returning starter on
the front line and defender Sean Love,
Jerrett Piercey and forward Dustin
Harper are the only other seniors on the
Devils' roster.
Moving up from the junior varsity level
are: Matt Piercey (So MF), Pat Cosmo
(Jr MF), Justin Feldt (Jr MF-F), Matt
Snodgrass (Jr MF), Norman Piatek (Jr
D), Andrew Colburn (Jr D), Chris Axtell
(Jr MF), David Prudhomme (Fr D), Jordan
Fifield (Jr HB-G) and Nate Peo (So
HB).
Potsdam: Coach Al Benda engineered a
Class B title for the Stoners in his first season
at head coach after several success seasons
at SUNY Canton. But this season, Coach
Benda must replace all but two starters including
their leading scorers in Scott Bartenstein
(seven goals), Shawn Lillie (seven goals), and
Peter McAdoo (six goals) and starting keeper
“ The division will be very competitive
this year. Potsdam will be solid as always.
With the new league re-alignment we are
looking forward to seeing some new and
competitive teams. At Massena we build
from the defense to the offense. Defensively
we look strong with Courtney Manley
making her debut in goal. She has
worked hard over the summer to learn the
position. She will be positioned with her
sister Marissa, captain Kallie Barnes, Erin
Francis, and Kaleigh Zappia in the
defense,” said Hayes.
Potsdam: Coach Joe Stark must
replace three-time Jeffers Tournament
MVP Cassie Grace (14 goals, seven
assists), goalie Monqiue Cornett, Tess
Hazen, Alysha Brown, Alicia Fayette,
Rachel Johnson, Megan Judware, Emily
Miller, Juliana Stoian, and Beth Waters
team (13-0-1, 15-1-1 overall).
Senior forwards Keeley Rice (11 goals,
10 assists) and Lia Davis (16 goals, four
assists) are the Stoners top returning players.
OFA: When asked where the major
strengths of her team lie, OFA Girls Soccer
Coach Lauren Morley flashed a huge
smile and answered: “all over the field”.
“We have solid people at every position,
our leadership is spread all over the
field and we have a lot of experience,” said
Coach Morley looking ahead to a challenging
schedule in in the new look four
division Northern Conference.
“We have our starting goalie back in
Allysha Bracy, Caily Arquitt is a returning
All-NAC player in our defense, Brook Badlam
is only sophomore but she gives us a
three-year varsity player at stopper, we
have three veteran midfielders with outstanding
speed in Mackenzie Cole,
MaKenzi Stevenson and Nikki Holmes;
and Shannon Tooley gives us a major
scoring threat to lead the front line.”
Bracy, Cole, Arquitt, Stevenson, Cole
and another returning defensive starter in
Brianna Barber head a nine-player senior
class which also includes: Emily LaFleur
(midfield), Grace Testani (defense),
Mikayla Wagstaff (midfield) and Chalsie
Rivet (forward).
John Jadlos, Kris Merchant, Ryan Merriman,
Corey Neaton, and David Smith also
departed along with underclassman James
McDonald.
“Our starters will have lack of starting
experience, but most of them received a great
deal of time last season. We’ve have some
pretty good players returning and if we work
together we can compete,” said Benda whose
team finished 6-4-2 Central, 10-6-3 overall in
putting it all together at the end of the season.
Senior Lee Buchanan (CHB-Mid) scored
three goals last season and is expected to be
a bigger threat this season. Ben Purviss (Sr.
For), a transfer, showed the ability to score at
Norwood-Norfolk last season with two goals.
Also returning are: Joe Bartlett (Sr. Mid),
Nate Carey (Sr. Goalie), Ryan Boult (Sr. HB),
Kyle Kingsley (Sr. Mid), Tyler Mina (Sr. Mid),
CJ Rishe (Sr. Mid), Rob Scott (Jr. FB-Mid),
Massena: Coach Betty Robert rejoins the
coaching ranks at Massena, taking over the
boys program from long-time coach Pat Hen-
Tooley led last year's junior varsity
team in scoring and played very well as a
late-season varsity callup. Coach Morley
expects her to combine with fellow junior
Nicole Duprey to give the Devils two true
snipers in the offensive scheme.
Leading the influx of talent from the JV
level are juniors: Mary Burns (D-F), Stacy
Barr (HB-F), Jasmine Brien (MF), Zendell
Malone: Coach Terry Collins takes
over the Lady Huskies (8-6 Central, 9-8
overall 2010) from coach Michelle Wiggins
and says the team is working hard adjusting
to a new system.
“We lost Brittany Marshall (33 goals)
and she was a talented athlete but we
have a solid nucleus back and right now
they’re doing well,” said Collins.
Bridget Gravel (Sr. C-Mid) produced 10
assists last season while Kylee Disotelle
g), Katie Tatro (Sr. FB-Mid 1g), Colleen
White (Sr. FB 1 g), Justina Cositore (Sr.
rie (26 years). Roberts has 14 years coaching
experience with the varsity girls program. The
Raiders will be rebuilding as just five players
return from last year’s 6-5-1 NAC Central, 7-6-
3 overall campaign.
“We only have five players back but those
five show excellent leadership which compliments
the 13 new players,” said Robert who
must replace Jon-Paul Prashaw (three goals),
Nathan McDonald, Jeremy Coleman, William
Lint (five goals), Connor Besaw, Travis Ashlaw,
“We must stay healthy. We’ve only got
14 players as several seniors didn’t come
be hard to replace last year’s seniors,”
said Reed of Lindsey Munger, Emily Carr,
Jordan Shampine, Liz Perrigo, and Stevie
improve on a 7-8-1 mark.
“We have some strong offensive
players back in key positions. We have
a good keeper but we lost our sweeper
and are having a tough time replacing
his leadership,” said DePuy who lost
Jared Heden, leading scorer with 11
Parishville-Hopkinton,
Colton-Pierrepont, St. Regis
Falls, Edwards-Knox and Tupper
Chateaugay: Coach Steve Lang returns
eight starters from last year’s Section 10 Class D
Championship team that finished 15-4-1 overall,
12-2 in NAC East.
But the three starters who graduated combined
for 30 goals and 18 assists. Raquel Fowler
(16g, 8a) is playing at SUNY Plattsburgh while
in Canada. Brianna Smith was also a
Shelby MacIntosh (five goals), Makenzie Hough
and Onalie Beckstead.
“We have a very good group of players back.
We’ve got some speed so hopefully, we can use
that to our advantage offensively. We’ve got to
replace Jena and Shelby but our program from
the youth level and junior varsity has been
strong for several years and we’ve got 24 to work
with,” said Daley.
Sophomore forward Taylor Lenny is the top
scorer returning as she scored eight goals last
season. Junior forward/middies Katie Marcellus
(five goals) and Taylor Marcellus (three goals)
Parishville-Hopkinton: Coach Evan
Harper begins his 31st season with a career
mark of 354-217-52 and believes his team
should be strong despite losing 10 seniors
including six starters in Rebecca Remington (3
goals, 12 assists), Nicole Gary, Cayla McGregor,
Jessica Helfter, Chelsea Guyette, and Alayna
Crump.
“We have a good amount of experienced players
up front and on defense. And several of our
younger players are strong enough to give us
good depth. But our key players must be very
consistent every day,” said Harper.
Coach Harper returns two talented All
Northerns including senior Natalie Remington
(FB-For.) and sophomore Kodi Perkins (FB-For).
Perkins scored 21 goals last season. Other key
Guyette (Soph. FB), Sophie Norman (Soph. For-
Mid), Makenzie Reif (Soph. FB), Megan Sullivan
(Soph. FB-For), Monica Votra (Soph. Mid-For),
and Marlee Wilson (Soph. Mid-GK).
“Our division will be very tough with
Chateaugay and Madrid-Waddington and the
addition of Tupper Lake and Edwards. With the
realignment, that should give similar-sized
schools equitable chance for success. We just
need to hustle and show good teamwork to be
successful,” said Harper.
Colton-Pierrepont: Coach Craig Bogart is
looking forward to the 2011 campaign looking to
build off a 2-10-2 NAC East, 3-12-3 overall
record of last year.
“It will be interesting to see the new format
this season. We are certainly excited to be playing
more "D" schools,” said Bogart.
“We are bringing back several players who
played key roles from last year, a year in which
we won a playoff game and gave Heuvelton a
good run in the quarters. We are also bringing
up a group of young players that I feel can step
in right away and hopefully lessen the losses of
our valuable seniors from last season including
Taylor Bonno, leading scorer Alex Sochia,
Brooke Baker, and Andilynn Remington.”
Brianna Beaulieu anchors the team’s
defense in goal. Other defenders include: Hunter
Farr, Jenna Paul. Tiffany Green, Abbie Johnson
and Kylie McKinley.
Tara Hennessy and Andrea Aldous highlight
the returning midfield and will be joined by
newcomers Rachael Vacarro, Morgan Doyle,
Autumn Clark, Haylee Hennessy and Sabrina
Johnson.
Chelsea McKinley and Whitney Miller have
experience as varsity members at forward. First
year players include: Kathryn Miller, Darrah
Panzarella, Karrie Long and Sara Guiney.
Edwards-Knox: Coach Patty Matthews-
Taylor begins her third season with the Cougars.
“The NAC East is going to be a very difficult
division with Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton,
and Madrid-Waddington. Add Tupper Lake,
Colton-Pierrepont, and St. Regis Falls and wins
will be hard to get. We’re very young after losing
Kamrie Dandrow (24 goals) and four other
starters including Abby Campbell, Kayley Hartley,
Kelly Henderix, and Ashley Davison from
last year’s 6-8-1 NAC West, 7-9-2 team,” said
Coach Matthews-Taylor.
Senior fullback Clair Davis (5 assists), senior
midfielder Mercedes Mackin (3 goals), senior
halfback Veronica White (2 goals), and sophomore
forward Harleigh LaBarge (4 goals) figured
in the scoring for the Cougars last season
and return.
Rounding out the Cougars are: Kylie Averill
(Sr. For), Jadilynn Bullock (Soph. HB), Molly
Burger (Fr. FB), Jana Fountain (Sr. FB), Bridget
Gladle (Soph. For), Katie Hale (Jr. Goalie),
Mackenzie Hall (Fr. FB), Kate Rowe (Soph.
Line), Katie Smith (Fr. HB), Madison Tresidder
(Sr. FB), Mackenzie Tresidder (Fr. FB), and Ashley
Whitmarsh (Soph. Line).
Tupper Lake: Coach Russ Bartlett believes
the Lumberjack switch to the NAC East is beneficial
for all 24 schools in Section 10 as TL
comes off a 5-10-1 (3-10-1 NAC Central) campaign
last year.
“I believe the competitive balance is great.
This new setup will make it balanced for many
of the 24 schools. This season, we’ve got eight
returning starters and 12 players with experience.
But replacing Kyla Kenyon (11 goals) and
Tiarra Spencer will be tough,” said Bartlet.
Senior goalie Kelsie St. Louis and senior fullback-forward
Carley Aldridge are back to anchor
the defense. Other senior returners include:
Paige Dukett (FB), Toni Facteau (Mid), Ciera
North (FB), Sam Samford (Mid). The veteran
junior class consists of Katie Stuart (For), Skylar
Trivieri (For), Alexa Shumway (Jr. FB), Christine
Kelly (For), and Madison LaVigne (Mid-FB)
while sophomore Madison Kelly (Mid) played
last season. Newcomers are: Paige Luton (Jr.
Mid-FB), Lauren Bouck (Soph. mid), and Lizzy
Zurek (Soph. FB).
Tall (Jr. Mid), Nick King (Sr. Mid), Brock Waite
(Soph. FB), Preston Frank (Soph. Mid), Joey
Jacot (Soph. Mid), Reed Donovan (Soph. Mid),
Donovan Tebo (Soph. FB) and William Schiavonie
(Soph. For).
Colton-Pierrepont: Coach Jim Nee begins
his fifth season after taking over the program from
Rod Thomas. Coach Nee must replace Tory
Boyce, Mark Avery and Robert Beaulieu from last
year’s 3-7-2 NAC East, 5-11-2 overall club.
“This year we have a stronger number of
seniors who have been the backbone of the
offense and defense over the last two years. Our
struggles will come with many new faces seeing a
greater number of minutes than in the past few
years,” said Nee.
Senior forward Mike Murray (five goals) and
Alex Bonno (three goals) highlight the returning
class along with senior midfielder Dan Knight.
James McFaddin (Sr. Mid), Erick Muller (Sr. Mid),
Tim Rapczynski (Sr. Mid), Craig Miller (Jr GK/For),
Jake (J.J.) Angleberger (Jr. For), Alex Harcourt (Jr.
FB), Gyle Dominy (Jr. FB), Nick Avery (Jr. Def),
Isaiah Johnson (Jr. For), Andrew Holden (Soph.
Def), Noah Whalen (Soph. Mid), and Scott Boyce
(Soph. Mid) round out the veteran group.
Newcomers Jordan Porter (Sr. FB), Bruce
Avery (Soph For-GK), John Patraw (Jr. For), and
Jon Porter (Soph. Mid) are looking to make immediate
impacts.
“The NAC East division looks to be solid from
the top to the bottom. We have the defending D
champ in Parshiville-Hopkinton, the defending C
champ in Madrid-Waddington (State Final Four)
and the defending division champ Chateaugay. Not
to mention East division newcomer Edwards-Knox
and a vastly improved team in St Regis Falls. We
will have to stay healthy and work hard in the
classroom to be successful. If we approach every
game with intensity and continue to build on our
team chemistry we will be a difficult team to
beat. Also, a little luck along the way would be nice
as well,” added Nee.
Chateaugay: Coach Bob Ouimet has to
replace seven starters from last year’s 12-6, 10-2
NAC East team.
“We lost two or three players from every area
of the field. We’ve got Michael Boyea back as our
leading scorer and our starting keeper in Erik
Fleury. But right now, Cory Richards hasn’t practiced
because of a knee injury and he’ll be a huge
loss for us. We’re going to need our youth to
develop quickly and with us being a week behind
everyone in the state, that hurts us,” said Ouimet.
Boyea (Sr. For-Mid) scored 11 goals last season.
Also aiding offensively last season were Gar-
rett LaBare (Sr. For-Mid), Joe McGillcuddy (Sr.
For-Mid), and Michael Trombly (Sr. FB). Richards
(Sr Mid), and Kelly O’Connor (Sr. FB-Mid) who
round out the returning players.
Newcomers include: Devin Barnes (Jr. Goalie-
Line), Brandon Sharland (Jr. Line), Dakota Cook-
Paige (HB), Jake English (Jr. HB), Mitchell Hesseltine
(Jr. HB-For), Tyler Martin (Jr. HB-FB), Greg
Holmes (Jr. HB-FB), Trevor Lang (Jr. HB), Derek
Martin (Jr. HB-FB), Pat Swanson (Jr. HB-FB),
Devin Willis (Sr. HB-FB), Dan Wilcox (Jr. HB-Mid),
and Chad Stalker (Soph. HB-FB).
Edwards-Knox: Coach Joe Knox enters his
team into the NAC East this season through
realignment after a 9-7-2 overall, 7-6-1 NAC West
campaign.
“The league is going to be very tough with
Madrid-Waddington, Parishville-Hopkinton,
Chateaugay, and Colton-Pierrepont. With being
new to this league, we’re the unknown which
could be a key for us, but also could be a weakness
because we don’t know many of these
teams either,” said Knox who must replace 25goal
scorer Jon Davison and Joe Thompson (six
goals).
Junior forward Jesse Bullock (three goals),
sophomore forward-goalie Kaden Dandrow (three
goals), and junior midfield-forward Ryan Gollinger
(three goals) all return to the line-up. Ben Fuller
(HB, FB, For), Luke Fuller (Sr. For), Dan Williams
(FB), and Caleb Gillian (HB/FB/For) are the
seniors leaders of the team while Tyler Tresidder
(For/HB/FB), Brandon Dunn (FB), Brent Archer
(FB-Mid), Chris Davison (HB/FB), Terry Hull (For),
and Nic Davison (Goalie) all return as juniors.
Rounding out the team are: sophomores Kyle
Gotham (FB), Jordan Davis (HB/FB), Derek Clark
(For/Mid), Austin Brown (FB), Abe White (FB),
Hunter Tuttle (HB/FB), Lenny Walrath (FB), and
Dillon Jenack (For/Mid) and freshman Nick Davis
(HB/FB).
St. Regis Falls: Aaron Varin begins his first
season with the Saints booters looking to
improve from a 0-13 campaign.
“We’ll be aggressive and fast, but we’re
small,” said Varin.
Varin returns Mike Fraser, Caleb Green, Cody
Lane, William Votra, and Timmy Wheeler. Kyler
Agans, Joe Arno, Ryan Duquette, Anthony Gibson,
Louis Goodrow, Michael Smith and Brandon
Votra are the newcomers.
“We need to play smart, but aggressive. If we
can stay positive we can be successful,” Varin
added.
Another Tight West Boys Soccer Race Expected
The NAC West Boys Soccer
circuit will be missing one of
it charter members this fall as
Edwards-Knox has moved to
the NAC East in the new four
division alignment.
But there will be no drop in
excitement as the league will
continue to draw high energy
from intense rivalries and
very consistent programs
Lisbon: Coach Bill Reed is currently engineering
the most wide-ranging rebuilding project
in his distinguished tenure over the
Golden Knight program. The Knights went 13-
1 (15-1-2 overall) last fall to win their program’s
ninth NAC West title in 11 years, but
seven starters graduated including five All-
NAC selections in Mike McDonell, Scott Lawton,
Eric Mehaffy, Nolan Fletcher and the NAC
West Defensive MVP in Dan Vallance.
Coach Reed has been very pleased at the
way the current Knights have approached the
challenges ahead following the tone set by
team leaders in senior striker Kyle Binion (5
goals, 7 assists last season) senior striker-center
midfielder Andy Martin (5 goals 4 assists
last season), junior center midfielder Adam
Felt and sophomore goalie Jim Robinson.
“We have some very skilled players to lead
us and the whole team has been working very
hard. We have been having double practices
and everyone is really buying into it. There is a
lot of competition for starting spots which will
continue,” said Coach Reed.
“I think by the middle of the season, we will
show a very big improvement. Our league and
Section 10 Class D soccer as a whole will be
very tough once again.”
Binion and Martin are part of a senior class
which includes: Nevin LaRock who looks to set
the tone for toughness on defense at sweeper,
Ryan Norman (stopper) and Dylan Crawford
(midfield). Felt (2 goals, 2 assists), who is the
only returning starter in the midfield, heads a
junior class which also includes: James Darcy
(midfield), Chris Measheaw (defense), Matt
Snyder (defense-midfielder), Matt Willard
(defense) and Eric Richards (striker).
Robinson heads a sophomore group which
includes Jake Putney (midfield), Ryan Buckley
(defense), John Hunter (defense), Cody James
(midfield), Colin Smith (midfield) and Colin
Fields (forward). A very promising eighth
grader in midfielder Adam Kelley rounds out
the team.
Heuvelton: Last year, coach David Steele’s
Bulldogs (7-8-2, 6-6-2 NAC West) went through
some major growing pains having to replace 11
seniors including nine starters. This season,
much of last year’s roster returns but Steele
will have to fill three major holes left by the
departure of goalie Jon Cooper, top defender
Trevor Brothers and David Putman.
“We are very strong with our returning
juniors and sophomores who played last season.
They’re working hard to learn a new system of
play,” said Steele.
Two of those returners are junior forward
Aaron Cobb who scored 14 goals last season
and honed his skills this summer playing for
the FC Freeze program out of Canton, and John
Sloan (junior, forward, 3g in 2010) who also
played in Coach Bob Durocher’s program.
“Both Jon and Aaron have improved and
developed over the summer. And Jack Tennant
also played this summer. We are looking to
Lucas Brown, Chris Power and Jacob St. Pierre
Rebuilding will be the theme for Northern Athletic Conference
West Division Girls Soccer this season - starting with
defending champion Heuvelton which reached the Section 10
Class D finals last fall.
Heuvelton: Coach Gus Burns must replace six seniors from last year’s NAC West Championship
team (16-1-2, 13-0-1 West) including West League Defensive MVP Linsay Tennant and
Sara Sloan, Jenna Lashua, Morgan McAdam, Danielle Tani, Kaitlyn Pierce.
“Everyv one of those girls was a very good athlete, so we have some big holes to fill,” said
Coach Burns.
“We have some nice young players who are learning quickly the style and speed of play at the
varsity level from modified. So we will make some mistakes along the way, but I think we’ll have
a competitive team.”
NAC West Co-Offensive MVP senior Emilie Ross returns after scoring 15 goals and the team’s
second and third leading scorers in sophomore forward Alexis Weidner (eight goals) and sophomore
forward-halfback Logan Tallman (seven goals) also return. Coach Burns also has senior
halfback Aliza Armstrong (four goals) back along with senior classmates Kellie Hebert (FB) and
Shicara Legault (HB-FB), juniors Abbey Basford (For./HB), Ashlyn Piercey (Mid-FB), Sanna
Jaquith (Goalie), and Elizabeth Schneller (HB) and sophomore Maddie St. Pierre (HB-FB).
Promising newcomers are sophomores: Rachel Thornhill, Macy Richardson, Shelby Williams,
Johanna Carmany, Alexis Sawyer, and Ashlyn Foster; freshmen Kylie Piercey and Olivia St.
Pierre, and talented eighth grader Hannah Thornhill.
Lisbon: Coach Scott Richardson begins his second year at the helm of the Knights but has a
major task ahead of replacing nine seniors, including first team All NAC Taylor Amo (1g, 3a), second
team All NAC and leading scorer Aleashia Parmeter (8 g), Taylor Armstrong (4g), second
team All NAC sweeper Patricia Crossett and NAC Sportsmanship award winner Jaclyn Moore.
“We lost several good players. Our strength will be the return of four seniors,” said Richardson,
speaking of defenders Allison Crowley and Colleen Hammond, midfielder Sarah Bodwell and
forward Allison Akins.
“We need Allison and Colleen to step up their defensive efforts. And Sarah is a solid midfielder.
Alison (Akins) will be changing her position from defense to offense and hopefully she can
quickly adapt,” said Richardson.
Sophomore striker Beth Crowley generated five goals and six assists in 2010 while junior midfielder
Gabby Walker also showed the ability to score in 2010, tallying a goal and logging three
assists.
Jackie Sovie showed excellent poise last season as a freshman goalie. Also returning are
Megan Barney (Soph. Mid), Maeve Bowdish (Soph. FB), Emily Dishaw (Jr. Mid), Chelsea Duprey
(Jr. Mid), Hannah Richardson (Soph. For), and Holly Williams (Soph. FB).
Newcomers include: Alex Amo (Fr. For), Morgan Baldock (Soph. FB), Kayla Bresett (Soph.
For), Aneissa Fields (Fr. Mid), Alyshia Murray (Fr. Mid), Nicole Neadom (Soph. FB), Lindsay Remington
(Soph. Mid), Jamie Skiff (Soph. FB), Maddison Vine (8th. For), McKenna Vote (Soph. FB),
Kristin Warner (Soph. FB).
“We just need to continue to build on our positives from last season,” added Richardson.
Hermon-DeKalb: Coach Jan Merchant begins his second season at the helm at H-D after a
6-4-4 NAC West, 8-6-4 overall season.
But Coach Merchant must replace two of his leading scorers in Rochelle Whitton (12 goals)
and Kaylee O’Donnell (nine goals).
“We only lost three players due to graduation, but they were cornerstones of the team. This
year, however, we have a lot of experienced seniors who should be hungry to step up into those
high-pressure roles. We expect to be a tough team to play against.”
Sophomore forward Kasey O’Donnell (four goals), senior fullback Franchesca Trombley (three
goals), senior forward Jocelyn Moulton (three goals) and senior forward Courtney White (two
goals) showed the ability to score last fall.
Senior fullbacks Brianna Sayer and Kelly Williams and senior goalies/fullbacks Chelsea
Streeter and Thanisha Scales anchor the defense.
Other members of the team are seniors Mariah Harris (HB), Amber Bogart (FB), Paige Morrill
(HB), Brittany Rust (HB); juniors Margo Barney (FB), Kelsey Cleveland (FB), Taylor Morrill
(FB), Abigail Mott (For), and Sadie Smith (FB), and sophomores Rhys Bryant (HB) and Courtney
Harrington (FB).
Hammond: Coach Shawn Dack believes his team came build off last years 4-10 NAC West, 5-
11 overall mark.
to step in and play goalie for us,” Steele added.
Brown is a sophomore while Power will also
play defense. St. Pierre played well last season
in the defensive end as a junior while Tennant
is a quick forward.
Cody McCormick, who made the switch to
soccer last fall after playing football, is a solid
senior defender while Connor Pierce scored two
goals and posted six assists and will be counted
on to produce better numbers as a senior midfielder.
Other notable returners are: Matt Guardino
(Jr. FB), Michael Guardino (Jr. Mid), Cody Holland
(Jr. FB), Dedrick Johnson (Jr. Mid), Dylan
FB). Newcomers include: Jeffrey Arquitt (Soph.
For), Tyler Bushey (Sr. FB), Jack Palmer (Soph.
Mid), Reilly Pierce (Soph. FB), Aidan Scagel
(Soph. For), and Eric Stewart (Jr. FB).
“The team is a year older and maturing in
the right direction to be very competitive in a
strong, competitive league,” added Steele.
Morristown: Coach Mike Roberts hopes his
Rockets are ready to take it to the next level.
After a 4-13 overall, 3-11 NAC West campaign,
Coach Roberts returns his entire
defense, but must replace leading scorer Jeff
King (12 goals) along with Josh Young, Brandon
Paquette, Matt Sherry and Alex Gagnon.
“Jeff’s graduation put a big hole in the
entire athletic program. But we have a good
core of players who have the ability to perform,
Defensively, we’ve got a good group back,” said
Roberts.
basketball standout, highlights the newcomers
as a junior wing. Chris Perretta, a winger,
also is new as a junior along with senior fullback
Aaron Wells and freshman halfback
Devin Dulmage. Zach Kanaly has also been
working with the varsity but may move down
to modified.
Hermon-DeKalb: Coach Milt Bessette
returns to the Demons after an one-year hiatus
and must replace leading scorer Logan
Allen (15 goals) and third leading scorer Connor
Whitton (nine goals).
“Our early weakness may be the loss of
strong players from last year,” said Bessette
who also must replace starters Logan Brabaw
and Josh Southwell who helped the Demons
reach the Section 10 Class D finals.
“We do return eight players from last
year’s 14-4-1 (11-3 West) team along with a
strong group of newcomers. Our team speed
will be a strength but with last year’s losses
we will be making a few adjustments in
player positions. We have players who are
capable of filling these positions, it’s just of a
matter of these players gaining experience,”
said Bessette.
Dylan Amo is back to anchor the attack
Rebuilding The Theme In NAC West Girls Soccer
we will deal with that as best as we can,” said Coach Dack.
year.
“Our strength is our defense with the
return of junior forward Joey Butts, senior
defender Jason Ripley and senior goalie Wayne
Best. We are hoping to be better at ball posession
this season,” said Countryman who is looking
Evan Popham, Cole Tristram, Paul Harris,
Devyn Moore , Everett Dowling, Broc McCarger,
Jon Fetterhoff, Gary Jessmer, Miguel Garcia ,
Robert Cushing and Dustin Sovie.
“That group was very solid. But I’m confident
because we have two excellent strikers
and two solid center-halfs with excellent speed.
Defensively, we lack experience.”
Newcomer Brady Hayden (Sr. C-Mid)
returns to the district from Gouverneur and has
the ability to replace Evan Popham, as the leading
Lumberjacks Focused On Peaking For D Playoffs
By CAP CAREY
TUPPER LAKE - If all goes as planned for the
Tupper Lake football team it should look at lot
like it did last season.
The Lumberjacks were 4-5 last year, but were
0-2 in the Class D division of the Northern Football
Conference.
“We look at a .500 season as being our goal,”
Lumberjacks coach Dennis Klossner said. “We
always want to beat the teams we feel we can.
Our two main games will be Moriah and Ticonderoga,
because that’s who we’re playing for the
Class D playoffs.”
Tupper Lake got off to a rough start last year,
losing three of its first four games, capped by a
55-0 blowout loss to Saranac Lake.
But the Lumberjacks rebounded and won three
of their last four regular-season games, before losing
27-7 to Ticonderoga in the Class D playoffs.
This season could look similar for Tupper Lake,
which seems to play most of the bigger schools
early in the year before closing out the season
playing schools closer to its size.
One of the leaders of the offense this year will
be senior running back Jordan Garrow, who finished
with 728 yards rushing last year and five
touchdowns. He averaged 5.4 yards-per carry and
80.9-per game.
Garrow was not supposed to be the feature
back, but senior Josh Facteau suffered a seasonending
injury in Tupper Lake’s third game. That
hurt the Lumberjacks last year, but gives the
team an experienced veteran this season.
Tupper Lake also returns its starting quarter-
back, sophomore Morgan Stevens, who threw for
330 yards last year with three touchdowns.
“We have some experience back on our (offensive)
line, so we’re hoping to be able to move the
ball,” Klossner said. “I feel we’re to the point
where we can mix it up 50/50 with the run and
the pass.”
Tupper Lake’s defense allowed an average of
26.6 points last year and 302.6 yards.
“Our linebackers (Nick Boushie, Elliott Kerst,
Stone Keniston and Jordan Garrow) are coming
back and we’ll run out of a 4-4,” Klossner said. “At
defensive line I think we might be a little
stronger than we were last year. Tim Larkin and
Damon Cole will play the tackles and we also
moved up Tim Ropas, he was a strong (junior varsity)
player and will play defensive end for us.”
