Free Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western Issue 3 Vol. 5“A GREAT FRIENDLY PUB”Throughout the week andWeekends - with-in walkingDistance of the town centreSince the Scrumpy ‘n’ Western first appearedas the Scrumpy ‘n’ Weston inMarch ‘04 then expanding to further areasso we did a slight change and became theScrumpy ‘n’ Western in December ‘04.The Scrumpy has since it began tried variousideas and up dates, some haveworked others failed. We have continuedto work to improve how we promote andsupport Live Music and all involved in theindustry with the main push on local bandsand musicians, rather than the mainstream that is supported by national magazinesand media. In it’s present form themagazine is turning up all over the UK aspeople find a copy, this has widened thereadership and the e-mail traffic from allover has increased. Because we are firstand foremost a printed publication, wehave concentrated over the past 4 yearson improving on the outlets were the mag* KARAOKE** GOOD FOOD* POOL42” PLASMA OUTSIDEcan be picked up or read in venues. Wehave tried various working agreementswith other web sites, which has given abasic profile of the magazine, but if you arealready a regular reader you will knowthese things anyway!! The problem we hadwas space and cost and the fact we arenow getting gigs and other items outsideour distribution area. So the next move wasto start looking for a title that would coverthe whole country, start a web site (sincewe did not have the S ‘n’ W web name) andcreate a new web site working with theprinted monthly publication.Confused don’t be just go to -www.mag4livemusic.co.ukWhere you can read the Scrumpy ‘n’ Westerneach month plus we have added another4 pages to the S n W on line. Also we willbe adding to the site info & more photo’s,we know it won’t happen over night but wehave made a start.Keep music livewww.

Free Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western Issue 3 Vol. 5BREAKTHROUGHThe local radio station ‘Forest FM’ arerunning a rather good idea called Breakthroughand is aimed at supporting andpromoting local music and musiciansacross their broadcast area and beyond(an area bounded by Swanage, Blandford,Salisbury, Southampton, Bournemouthand Poole). It’s not for profit, it’s becausethey really do want to support great locallive music, with invited applications frombands and artists ( provided they’re notalready signed to a major record label) andeach month, one band receives the‘Forest FM’ Breakthrough accolade. They get : - Daily air play for a month on‘Forest FM’ - 92.3 ( and on the web atwww.forestfm.uk ) - A live session on air -Interviews on air - Publicity and promotion- A headline gig - which Forest FM alsorecord for future broadcast. The station have had some 50 bands applyso far - and are always looking for more- as long as they are either based in thearea noted above or regularly gig there. The winners for May 2008 Breakthroughaward are the Bournemouth/Southamptonbased band ‘Crystal Arcade’ who featuredall through May with the listed benefits.‘Crystal Arcade, are a four piece indie rockband and have been making a real impacton the local scene. Comprising RossRolph on keyboards, rhythm guitar andlead vocals, Mike Rolph on bass andbacking vocals, Daniel Ratcliff on leadguitar and Matt Skeats on drums / percussionand backing vocals. ‘Crystal Arcade’have had a great start to 2008 having supportedchart acts ‘Palladium’ and‘Alphabeat’ as well as getting to the semifinalsof the Dorset Unsigned MusicAwards. They’ve been gigging heavily andplaying to packed venues, with some Londongigs thrown in for good measure aswell. Their latest single ‘All Things SheSaid’ was released in May during theirBreakthrough tenure, which has been wellreceived. They haven’t been open thatlong but they’re very committed to havinglive music, and really nice people too.It was also interesting setting up our gearand doing a sound check with people satin the venue reading about us as we wereon the May S ‘n’ W front cover. It’s a bigvenue with a stage and drum riser - lovely!Katie was a particularly happy bunny! Notonly did she get a drum raiser but she gotto use her Chad Smith snare which inmost venues is too loud. It cracks like aMOFO and sounds gorgeous. There wassome rather impressive spikes and mohawksin the audience which had me a bitnervous - would we get bottled if we didBritney? By the time we got to Seasons inthe Sun though, aforementioned mohawkwas bobbing up and down in time to oursilly dance. Hurrah! There was lots ofcomedians in the audience, heckling in apanto like style. It gave Hoover somegood banter and he was on top form andusing his wireless mic too the max. Bullywas running around like a mad thing allnight, I thought we were gonna have toget the defibrillator out again!! There wereso many songs that I wanted us to playbut couldn’t fit in without ending up doinga four hour gig and killing the rhythmsection! It was great to have such a captiveaudience who sang along with everything.Using our own equipment whichwas really nice for me because I couldcontrol the lights, does it make a differenceto the audience? I dunno, but hopefullyit adds to the overall performance. We stayed for a couple of games of poolafter we had packed away while the landlordkindly sorted out some chips for us!Wicked! Everyone was soooo friendly andloving it, we had an absolute ball. A nicevenue to add to our list of favourites.Cheers to everyone who turned up, we’llsee you (and all your mates) next time.www.reoffenders.co.uk

Free Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ Western Issue 3 Vol. 5‘Jerichova’ were formed in August 2006by four mates who wanted to play somethingdifferent .They all came from variedmusical backgrounds, Jeff Hague andHoward Williams from New Orleans Jazz,Vaughan Channon from Rock ‘n’ Roll andCountry, and Rick Coyne from the folkscene. They decided that skiffle needed arevival and began meeting in the skittlealley of The Bell, Banwell once a week, playing the music made popular back inthe mid 50’s by people such as LonnieDonegan, Chas McDevitt and The Vipers.Their noise filter through up into the puband they were offered a gig. They are nowsetting feet tapping regularly, at variousvenues, to a mixture of Skiffle,Blues,Plantation Spirituals, Chain Gangwork songs, with a few songs thrown in.They are, first and foremost, a FUN band. They enjoy what they do and this comesacross in their music, as can be heard ontheir recently released CD ‘Going Home’,which is available at their gigs. Well it’sreally a question of space and costs, sincemost of these were regular, when onestarted we would be told but if one foldedmost times we were not. Also most are ongoing, and we now receive so manychanging weekly events, it’s about cost. One of the most delightful things to do inCornwall (and anywhere else for that matter)during the summer is to stand outsideone of Cornwall’s wonderful public houses, watching our hard working Morris dancersweaving their enchanting spell in time tothe age-old music of England. Darts beganplaying pubs, clubs and the university circuitswhere they soon build up a large following.Their unique style of doo wop Rock‘n’ Roll and of course their stage act hadthem as one of the top acts around, soontheir reputation got around and the breakcame when they appeared on BBC radioLondon in October 1976. The group soongot a record deal with Magnet and their firstrelease hit the top 10 in 1977, other hitsfollowed ‘Come back My Love’, ‘Boy FromNew York City’, ‘It’s Raining’......Then in 1979 Den Hagarty left and Dartsseemed to loose their sparkle. In 1980 adispute with Magnet records, resulting in arestraint on the release of any new material,so the band toured the USA for a fewyears and coming back to the UK in 83’and began a new tour appearing in theatresin ‘Yakey Yak’, the show mostly stayingin the West End of London.....Now ‘Darts’ are back with the legendaryDen Hagarty, the guy with the bulgingeyes!! And the band of course are touring. This month on the 7th in Coventry wehave ‘The Spitfires’ (0247 6336533) onthe 14th in Surrey it’s ‘Class of 58’ (01483856744 on the 20th we have a RecordHop at Taunton R ‘n’ R Club and on the28th in Cleveland we have ‘The RhythmBoys’. Free Every Month Scrumpy ‘n’ WesternBAD NEWS WHEN THE ROTSETS IN - WHAT’S THE ANSWER?Thirty years ago it was very rare to hear orsee a Public house close down. If one didit was down to redevelopment, as often asnot thirty years ago with new estates beingbuilt it was a case of more opening. Ohhow times have changed, since my involvementwith the Scrumpy ‘n’ Westernand the amount of traveling I do, I have inthe past few years seen a rapid decline inpubs. I have even in the past year drivenpast one main road boozer that is now aBedding Centre!! On the main once a pubshuts down the most common re-openingis as a Restaurant, mainly Indian or Chinese.Sad the way of change, what willhappen to live music now the smoking banis in force plus the economic down turn ishaving such an effect on a once so importantpart of English life, the local pub?In the past 6 months The Mash Tun inWinchester, a pub that for many years wasa major live music venue has been boardedup with a tolet / for sale sign protrudingfrom the side of the building. Last monthscaffolding appeared round the building,on enquiring, that it’s to be reopened as arestaurant!! Another main music venue‘The Tumble Down Dick’ in Farnborough,Surrey has closed and boarded up, maynow we are informed open as a restaurant!Worried music fans from across the areahave started a campaign to try and savethe only place to see a gig in Farnborough. Over the years ‘The Tumbledown Dick’has hosted such bands as ‘The Jam’, ‘BadManners’, ‘Hundred Reasons’, ‘Mega CityFour’, and ‘Ruben’ plus many many more.It was an integral part of the local live musicscene, having hosted countless thousandsof local and unsigned bands over theyears. At the present time it is estimatedthat 5 pubs a day are closing in England, this excludes Wales, Scotland and NorthernIreland. How many of these host livemusic? What are the musicians Union doingabout this problem, is it a problem? TheScrumpy has decided to take a furtherlook, Why?Bands and musicians who played at lastyears Folk and Blues Festival on the Isle ofWight claim they have not been paid frotheir performances . Folk legends ‘FairportConvention’ say they are owed £5000.00for headlining the event. Other musiciansand local businesses are also claimingthey have not been paid for services givento promoters. The promoters are blamingthe sponsors not paying them for the delayin payment to bands who played in 2007.‘Fairport Convention’ played at the original1968 Folk & Blues Festival, in an interviewwith the BBC, band leader ‘Dave Pegg’said that they had expected to have beenpaid in September ‘07. He went on to say“We did a concert there which sold out. Ipersonally traveled all the way from Francewhere I was on holiday and took three daysout of my life. The audience were great, wehad a really good night, we may appear tobe a big name but this is our livelihood andwe really do need to get paid.”The organisers of the Folk and Blues Festivalalso organise The Isle of Wight JazzFestival, say performers will get their appearancefees paid. They did admit thatthere were some big problems with theFolk Festival that still needed to be sorted!Good publicityNEEDS GOODPhotographsPete Brownett01934 620184www.emotionsphotography.net
