Iam very grateful for havingrecieved a scholarship, not onlyfor the financial aid, but alsofor the confirmation it gives me as ahardworking student. It representsonly a taste of the satisfaction tobe had in working in veterinarymedicine, and it is affirming. I amtruly honored to have been chosenas a recipient.~ Valerie Hoffpauir, Class of 20133

Letter from Our DeanWelcome, Partners, from the LSU School ofVeterinary Medicine. It is with true personalpride that I share with you this Annual AdvancementReport. It highlights the extraordinary educational, research, and service achievements that LSU SVM hasattained in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. This summary ofanother great year profiles not only those whose liveswe have touched, but also the many individuals andorganizations who have inspired us by touching ourmission. Our focus during the year has been you—our Partners. When your School of Veterinary Medicine wasfounded in 1968, our mandate was to educate futureveterinarians. Since then, our mission has expanded.Your partnership and support have helped us evolveinto a thriving biomedical research institution with over$47 million dollars in extramural grants and contracts. The scientific investigations we conduct every day withour research partners have enormous significance toboth animals and humans. In addition to empowering our educational and researchmissions, the LSU SVM’s Veterinary Teaching Hospitalserves as a resource for both animals and people. In 2009-2010, the Hospital provided care for over22,000 companion and other animals while providingnecessary veterinary medical and clinical experience forour students. That experience also extends beyond ourdoors—both in the ambulatory services provided by theLarge Animal Clinic and in the community engagementprovided by the Shelter Medicine/Disaster Responseprogram. With your funding, Shelter Medicine studentparticipants directly supported local animal sheltersin times of emergencies. Between disasters, it hasprovided community outreach in the form of homelessanimal care, spay/neuter surgeries, and pet populationcontrol. This front-line primary care trains students inthe well-medicine basics they will encounter in privatepractice. In May 2010, as our 34th class of veterinarians walkedacross the stage, the number of our graduates toppedthe twenty-four hundred mark. Since 1977, we havegraduated 2,419 veterinarians. Because you partneredwith us and supported the Advance Veterinary MedicineFund, we were able to boost our endowed scholarships.Gifts from alumni and friends like you ensured aminimum $2,000 award for every endowed scholarshiprecipient. We will continue to build our endowment sothat our goal of $5,000 per endowed scholarship isattained. In the face of economic uncertainty, strong partnershipsare priceless! Our challenge in the next twelve monthsis to continue our commitment—to provide the bestveterinary medical education, to remain a leader instate-of-the-art veterinary and biomedical research, and to serve our community with the compassion andconsistent commitment that you expect. Our successis largely attributed to you—our alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students—our Partners! Thank you!Peter F. Haynes, DVM, DACVS4

Financial ReportThe LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s (LSU SVM) operating revenue for Fiscal Year 2009-10 was justunder $42 million. This was $2.8 million (6.3%) less than the previous fiscal year. The decrease wascaused by a reduction in our State Appropriation. The LSU SVM revenue is basically composed of foursources: 51% State Appropriation; 24% Self-Generated (mainly Teaching Hospital operations); 20%Tuition and Fees; and 5% Philanthropic Giving. Philanthropic giving in FY 2009-10 amounted to $1.89 million. Thiswas an 15% increase from the previous fiscal year.We are efficient stewards of our resources. The operating budget expenditures are categorized into seven functions. These functions consist of Instruction, Research, Operations and Maintenance, Academic Support, Public Service,Institutional Support, and Student Service, Scholarships and Transfers. As seen on the pie charts, over 90% of ourexpenditures support instruction, research, and programs. Partner with Us to Help StudentsTo Be a Part of Somebody’s Dream isthe Biggest ThingHorses for me have always given meinner peace—just having horses, beingaround horses,” said Harold Forman, founder of the Harold G. Forman FamilyFoundation, which has established two scholarships forstudents at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.“When I was a little kid in New Orleans,” added Harold,“we didn’t have much money, but there were a lotof expectations of us as kids to excel.” Every year,Forman’s father took him to the track at the LouisianaFairgrounds. Back then, $12 could get you a few Cokesand you could play the daily double.“I always said if I ever had the money I would buymy dad a racehorse,” said Harold. Thirty years ago,Forman got his big break and bought his dad thathorse. While his dad enjoyed horse racing, he really didn’twant to own a horse, so it became Harold’s first horse.Thirty years and some 300 horses later, Harold hasopened the Copper Crowne Equestrian Center, thenewest training center for thoroughbreds in Louisiana.Harold was always encouraged to succeed, andsupporting the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine10

allows him to help others succeed.“Supporting the veterinary schoolwas a given because I’ve alwaysadmired veterinarians,” said Harold.“It was a natural fit to give to theSVM.”Harold’s great joy in doing this is getting to knowthe students. He goes to lunch each year with thescholarship recipients to learn about their dreams andgoals and to give them his insights into the businessof veterinary medicine. “To be apart of somebody’s dream is thebiggest thing to me,” said Harold.“It’s something that comes backto me 100-fold. To see themsucceed and the excitement andenthusiasm they have is wonderful.I never want to see someone withall the potential and drive in theworld not be able to fulfill theirgoals because they couldn’t afford to do it. I hope thatwhat I do helps them in some small way.”The Harold G. Selected by the faculty ofthe Equine Health Studies Program, the scholarshipsare awarded to active members of the Student Chapterof the American Association of Equine Practitioners. In2010, the recipients were Stephanie Thomas (Class of2013) and Lindsey Shuell (Class of 2012).“I was completely honored to be nominated by theEquine faculty for this scholarship,” said StephanieThomas. “I do plan on going into equine medicine inLouisiana. The financial benefit isvery much appreciated. However,I most appreciated Mr. Formantaking the time to talk with us aboutour goals and dreams. Mr. Formanhas a tremendous passion forthis industry and took his time toencourage us and share his ideas. My family and I would like to thankthe Forman Family Foundation andMr. Forman personally again.”“I have always had a natural affinity for horses,” saidLindsey Shuell. “I believe it’s inevitable that I will be ahealer and comforter for their illnesses and suffering. As a student about to enter clinical rotations, it is criticalthat students visit equine practices on externshipsaround the country or even overseas to exposeourselves to more of the equine industry. While theLSU equine clinic is very strong and prepares us forthe equine world outside of these walls, the industryis extremely varied from place to place and practiceto practice; and these externships expose us to themany opportunities available in equine practice.Tuition and student loans alone are a burden, andexternships are not funded, thus adding to the overallcost of a professional education. I am very gratefulfor Mr. Forman’s contribution. Filled with purpose andunbridled enthusiasm and backed by a strong equineveterinary knowledge base, I am ready and willingto take on the future academic challenges of equinemedicine and surgery.”11

Burns, DVM, retiredchairman of the Department of Vivarial Scienceand Research at Tulane University Schoolof Medicine, created a $1 million charitableremainder trust with the LSU Foundation specificallyfor the establishment of a matched chair in VeterinaryMedicine. In addition to his position at Tulane, Dr.Burns, a graduate of Ontario Veterinary College, wasan adjunct faculty member at LSU and served as aconsultant with many pharmaceutical companies. The trust has transferred to the LSU Foundationand $600,000 has been realized to provide fundsfor a matched chair at the LSU School of VeterinaryMedicine. In April 2010, the Kenneth F. Burns EndowedChair was awarded the $400,000 state match by theLouisiana Board of Regents, thereby achieving ahistoric first for the LSU SVM.Endowed chairs are one of the most prestigiouscontributions at any university. Donors can nameendowed chairs in the college or program of his orher choice. Income from the endowment can be usedto supplement salary or provide additional funds atthe discretion of the incumbent, such as graduatestudent stipends, post-doctoral student salaries, andspecial research equipment and library acquisitions,12

all in support of the academic program. The chairlasts in perpetuity and always provides income to thedesignated college or program.no children and was intent on leavinga legacy in his chosen field ofveterinary medicine. The next step is to determine which LSU SVM programreceives the chair. “Funding of the Kenneth F. BurnsChair in Veterinary Medicine ensures that the LSUSchool of Veterinary Medicine will move forward in itsefforts to develop a center of excellence in biomedicalresearch, as outlined by the Stakeholder Summit heldin 2009,” said Dean Peter F.Haynes. “LSU SVM has a longhistory of promoting biomedicalresearch directed at animal andhuman disease, and this endowedchair gives us the resources toexcel even further in this arena.”Dr. Burns’s support of the Schoolstemmed from his close personal relationship with Dr.Sheldon Bivin, who headed the Division of LaboratoryMedicine when Dr. Burns had the same role at Tulaneand the Veterans Administration hospital in NewOrleans, La. According to Dr. Bivin, Dr. Burns hadThey are the engine that drives thelearning experience at LSU, andtheir instruction and involvementis what helps us recruit the beststudents—and keep them—at LSU.“The heart of any great universityis great faculty,” said Maj. Gen.William G. Bowdon, president and CEO ofthe LSU Foundation. “They are the engine that drivesthe learning experience at LSU, and their instructionand involvement is what helps us recruit the beststudents—and keep them—atLSU. This is particularly importantat the School of VeterinaryMedicine, which as one of only28 veterinary schools in theUnited States, must competeon a national basis to draw thebest teachers and students toour campus,” Bowdon said, “The Burns DistinguishedChair will help our outstanding School of VeterinaryMedicine fulfill this mission and ensure that scholarsof national stature and distinction continue to call thisgreat institution home.”13

It is weak and disoriented, and itswing seems to be hurt. The hunter bringsthe owl to the LSU School of VeterinaryMedicine. The owl will be evaluated and treated atno cost to the Good Samaritan who brought it tothe hospital. The hope is to treat the injuries andrelease it back into the wild. This is the mission of theSchool’s Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, which receivesapproximately 1,700 wildlife cases each year. About 45-50% of these animals are treated and returned to thewild (this is the national average for wildlife releases, according to Dr. Javier Nevarez, assistant professor ofzoological medicine and director of the WHL. Louisianais home to 82 species of mammals, 444 species ofbirds, 85 species of reptiles, 51 species of amphibians, and 260 species of fish. After the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010,the WHL was asked by the Louisiana Department ofWildlife & Fisheries to treat non-oiled, injured birdsfound along the coast. While British Petroleum wasfunding treatment and rehabilitation for oiled animals,no funding was allotted for these non-oiled birds.16

Over 60 of these animals (many of which were brownpelicans, the state bird of Louisiana) came to the LSUVeterinary Teaching Hospital and were cared for by thefaculty, staff, and students in the WHLIn addition to treating ill and injured wildlife, the WHLalso provides an educational resource that focuseson the importance of wildlife conservation and onthe relationship between humansand animals, educates veterinarystudents, and preserves thebiodiversity of Louisiana wildlifethrough scientific investigation andthe establishment of a conservationmedicine research program.“Since the Wildlife Hospital receivesno direct state funds and because the citizens ofLouisiana are the collective stewards of our wildlife,I felt the cause was needed and worthwhile,” saidDr. Bernhard Mayer (LSU SVM 1980), a supporterof the School’s Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana. Dr.Mayer does not have a favorite wild bird but doesadmire the majesty of eagles in flight. The WHL treatsapproximately 10 bald eagles each year.Louisiana is home to 82species of mammals, 444species of birds, 85 speciesof reptiles, 51 species ofamphibians, and 260 speciesof fish. The Mayers have a Labradorretriever named Jingle Belle, twocats named Tigger and Minky, and about 40 box turtles. “Itstarted with one female easternbox turtle, then a second one,and then six,” said Bernie. The groupeventually numbered 60 but Hurricane Katrina cut thepopulation down to 40. They stay insmall pens when young and roamthe backyard when they become“teenagers.” They hibernate in thewinter and are active in the warmermonths.Dr. Mayer did not decide to seriouslypursue veterinary medicine until hisjunior year at the University of New Orleans (Dr. MyronSmith formerly of the Jefferson Parish Animal Clinicwas a good influence). As with other publicuniversities, the LSU SVM relies heavily on privatefunds to enhance our mission. Thanks to the generosityof friends like Mrs. Shirley Picou and Dr. Steve Slaton, the LSU SVM can direct funds to programs withimmediate priorities.Mrs. Shirley Picou“I am so grateful for the wonderful work of Dr. PaulSeemann (LSU SVM 1983) and his staff, and I wantedto make a gift that would recognize their work anddedication. I wanted my gift to make an impact,” saidMrs. Shirley Picou, who raised five Pomeranians withher late husband, George, and who has been a client ofDr. Seemann’s for over 20 years. The staff at RidgefieldAnimal Hospital is like her family. “They are all there, with smiling faces and eager to help,” said Mrs. Picou.“Dr. Seemann worked so hard to get where he is, andhe genuinely cares about the animals he serves.”When Mrs. Picou wanted to honor Dr. Seeman andhis staff, Dr. Seemann suggested that she make a giftto the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. A month18

after she made the gift, Bunny (so named becauseshe seemed to hop like a bunny), her last Pomeranian, passed away. Mrs. Picou feels that her gift is evenmore meaningful to her because she sees it as a way tohonor Dr. Seemann and his staff, memorialize Bunny, and give back to the veterinary profession. “I wish morepeople knew what it takes to put together a programlike the one at LSU SVM,” Mrs. Picou said. “They dothings, not because it is their job, but because theycare. I hope more people see how important it is togive back for the great work LSU does; they work verydiligently to care for all of those pets.”In the past, Bunny and Rustie, another of herPomeranians, had been patients in the LSU VeterinaryTeaching Hospital. At that time, Mrs. Picou was able totour the hospital, and she and her husband donated awide-screen television for the waiting room in the SmallAnimal Clinic so that families could have something towatch while their pets received veterinary care.of Veterinary Practitioners. Hisphilanthropic spirit is evident in thehours he gives to the profession, the wisdom he shares with hiscommunity, and, of course, hisgenerous gift to the LSU SVM.“It took me several years to appreciate the importanceof the degree I received from LSU,” said Dr. Slaton. “Asa new graduate, I was thrown into the world of smallbusiness and began to grow my practice. As yearspassed and I began to appreciate the many benefitsand the numerous doors that were opened to me asa small animal practice owner, I developed a trueappreciation of the degree and education I received atLSU.” Dr. Slaton is committed to giving back.Dr. Seemann said that he enjoys having Mrs. Picouas a long-standing client and appreciates havingdedicated, caring clients who take such great care oftheir pets. “It makes my job easier,” he said.Mrs. Picou’s gift was in support of the SVMPhilanthropic Partners fund, which allows the dean todevelop and maintain excellence at the LSU SVM.Dr. Seemann owns Ridgefield Animal Hospital inThibodaux, La., with two partners, Dr. Dawn Koetting(LSU SVM 1984) and Dr. Natali Robichaux (LSU SVM2000). Dr. Lane Breaux (LSU SVM 2005) and Dr.Ashley Baker are associates at the practice. Dr. Baker,a graduate of Kansas State University, is the daughterof Dr. Bruce Baker, who graduated with Dr. Seemann in1983.Dr. Steve Slaton (LSU SVM 1990)Dr. Steve Slaton is not only a successful veterinarypractitioner and an alumnus of the LSU SVM, he isalso the current president of the Louisiana BoardDr. Steve Slaton (LSU SVM 1990)19

Myyoungest son Joseph, has always had a passion foranimals, and the excellent education and care Joe hasreceived from the veterinary school was also a factor inmy decision to help support the school.“I think I have a much greater understanding of justhow important the school is and the amazing time andenergy it takes to educate and train future veterinarians.By making a gift, I was given greater access andunderstanding as to how the school works and just howimportant it is. I would recommend that everyone make agift to the school, even if it is a small donation.”Sue splits her time between New Orleans and New YorkCity. She recently spent time in London, where sheproduced a critically acclaimed revival of the Broadwaymusical “Smokey Joe’s Café.” In New York, she iscurrently producing the next great American Broadwaymusical “Empire,” by Caroline Sherman and Robert Hull, which is about the hopes and dreams of the people whobuilt the Empire State Building.Sue’s other son, Buzz Vaccaro, Jr., graduated fromthe LSU School of Mass Communications. Our Faculty PartnersDr. Dennis McCurnin, professor ofveterinary surgery, said, “I have alwaysfelt that I needed to fully supportthe organization I work for. I give toorganizations that I believe in, like the American CancerSociety, Rotary Foundation, American Red Cross,United Way, Heifer Project, and Iowa State UniversityFoundation.”Dr. McCurnin’s duties at the LSU SVM include teachingpractice management courses, advising veterinarystudents about their careers, and directing the School’scontinuing education program. In these roles, he fostersrelationships with both the current students and ouralumni. He also has a special place in his heart for cats.Dr. McCurnin and his wife, Jeri, have always hadcats (usually two at a time ) but currently haveone cat, Jessie. “When our cat Jessie developedhyperthyroidism, there was never any thought of doinganything else other than to treat and manage hisdisease,” said Dr. McCurnin. “After all, he has been amember of our family for 10 years. He also has his ownbathroom and bedroom in our house.”“I feel very fortunate to work at LSU and play a rolein educating our future veterinarians,” added Dr.McCurnin. “In addition I know I am very reliant uponmy education to allow me to do what I do. Therefore, Ifeel an obligation to help in any way I can as a partialpayback for the life I lead and the things I have beenexposed to as a veterinarian. I hope that my support isused by the Dean as he sees fit and where the greatestneed exists.”Dr. McCurnin joined the faculty of the LSU SVM in1990 and served 16 years as director of the VeterinaryTeaching Hospital.21

Our Alumni PartnersDr. Gary Levy (LSU SVM 1982) and Dr. David Senior, associate dean for advancement and strategic initiatives. We’ve Got ClassDean Peter F. Haynes has said time andtime again that what makes the LSUSchool of Veterinary Medicine great isits people—its faculty, staff, students, and alumni. It is their dedication to the veterinaryprofession and to the LSU SVM that enhances ourglobal reputation. Our alumni are honored this yearwith awards for giving and with Distinguished AlumnusAwards.Alumni Awards for GivingEach year the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine givestwo special alumni awards for giving—one to the classwith the highest participation and the other to the classwith the largest total contributions. For the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the Class of 1982received the award for highest participation with 53% ofclass members making donations to the LSU SVM. Theaward was accepted by class agent Dr. Gary Levy at analumni reception following the 2010 Annual Conferencefor Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians. “Beingclass agent allows me to show my gratitude for theSchool that gave me my career and helps me stayconnected to my classmates,” said Dr. Levy. “Everylittle bit helps and getting in touch with each other givesus a chance to reminisce.”The award for largest total contributions went to theClass of 1981, which donated a total of $8,980. LikeDr. Levy, class agent Dr. George Robinson also likeskeeping in touch with classmates. “I felt that someoneneeded to step up and help the LSU SVM,” said Dr.22

Robinson. “People don’t understand the importanceof the presence of alumni. Alumni coming back andhelping the School help create a sense of community.”Dr. Alfred Stevens (LSU SVM 1979), 2004Distinguished AlumnusVeterinarians are an important part of every community, and they see first-hand the human-animal bond withtheir clients and patients; they also experience itthemselves, as Dr. Alfred Stevens, alumnus and donorto the LSU SVM, recounts.“My wife Susan and I reminisce aboutTina, our very first ‘child’ so-to-speak.Tina was a part-Dachshund femalewho came into our life and carvedout a huge chunk of our affection. Assweet as she was, she was also anassassin in dog’s clothing. Tina didn’tdo well will anything that made a squeaking sound(toys, insects, mice, etc). When we heard a squeak, everyone would run to the sound to beat Tina there. Iam proud to say that we accomplished that goal 98% ofthe time and let’s not discuss that other 2%.“At the age of 14 Tina developed thyroid cancer, whichmetastasized to the lungs. Her time remaining withus was short despite all available treatments. On thenight Susan and I decided to let her go, the trip to ourveterinary hospital was the longest two miles I haveever taken. This one life experience has prepared memore than any other to more compassionately relate tothose clients that must also decide as Susan and I didon that night 19 years ago.Giving should nevercome from a feeling ofobligation but out of atrue desire of the heart.were created, the opportunities that havebeen afforded us, and the admiration wehold for our colleagues. I am foreverindebted.“Susan and I consider giving to be an expressionof our overall thanks and recognition that others canbenefit as did we. Giving should never come from afeeling of obligation but out of a true desire of the heart.“I believe wholeheartedly that our time spent both inveterinary school and now as graduates has beenenhanced by those before us who saw a need andsent forth their support to the program. The Aesop saying, ‘No act of kindness,no matter how small, is ever wasted’is so true. This ‘act of kindness’ willalso apply to any gift one may desire tosend. Monetary support will always carryemotional ties; that is ‘should I contributeor should I not conribute.’ All I know is that I have seenwhat this form of support can do and believe that weare all better veterinarians because of it.“Alfred and Susan have four pets: a seven-year-oldboxer, Ruger; and three cats, Willis, Tadpole, and Isis.“Our support for the School comes out of a deeprespect for the exceptional faculty and instructionalsupport staff that molded not only me but our life asa couple. So much of what I observed, learned andemulated enabled me to become the practitioner I amtoday. My family and I owe so much to the School thatwe could never truly repay what we have gleaned fromthe School of Veterinary Medicine throughout the years. We have been blessed by the many friendships thatSusan and Dr. Alfred Stevens with their boxer,Ruger.23
