a message from our presidentThe HCA North Florida Division remains a significant force in the NorthFlorida and South Georgia communities we serve, with an economicimpact exceeding one billion dollars annually. Our nearly 17,000employees, physicians and volunteers provide vital healthcare servicesthrough our 14 hospitals, five surgery centers, four cancer centers andtwo imaging centers. Our efforts to improve quality and operations in our emergencydepartments continued this year, resulting in record low wait times forthe almost half a million patients who received emergency care in ourfacilities. We are so confident in our consistently short ER wait timesthat we post them live on outdoor boards, our hospital websites andthrough iTriage, a new web-based service offering consumers healthcareresources on their mobile phones. Residents can also access our ER waittimes via mobile phones by texting “ER” to 23000.While our ER volumes are growing, so is the number of patients without adequate health insuranceor the financial resources to pay for this care. Last year, our hospitals treated more than 134,000uninsured patients in the communities we serve. Additionally, we treated more than 195,000 patientscovered through the Medicaid program.Despite these challenges, we continue to expand to meet the growing demand for our services. In addition to opening a state-of-the-art Cancer Center at North Florida Regional Medical Centerthis year, we also completed a patient bed expansion and renovation of the Burn Center at DoctorsHospital of Augusta, an ER expansion at Ocala Regional Medical Center, and an ICU expansion isalmost complete at Coliseum Medical Centers. We are also upgrading technology at an unprecedented rate to ensure we can continue toprovide clinical excellence and optimal patient outcomes. From the CyberKnife ® at NorthFlorida Regional Medical Center that gives us the latest in cancer fighting technology topreparing for the Electronic Health Record (EHR), our facilities are integrating wireless anddigital technology through all modalities. Robotics is another strong focus with the da VinciRobotic Surgical System, enabling surgeons to perform precision work with small incisions. Our hospitals have done an outstanding job focusing on quality and operations, with many ofthem now Accredited Chest Pain Centers, Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Centers andCancer Centers accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Cancer. All of theserepresent the gold standard of care today, awarded by independent accrediting organizations.Sincerely,HCA North FloridaMichael P. Joyce President, HCA North Florida Division

With heightened concernsregarding the spread H1N1, or swine flu, employeesproviding direct patient care were required to receivevaccines for both seasonal flu and H1N1, or wearsurgical masks while at work. Special signs wereposted throughout our facilities with reminders forpatients, visitors, and employees to take precautionsto help avoid spreading the flu to others. Handsanitizers were conveniently placed at entrances andpublic areas to heighten awareness of the importanceof hand cleansing. In addition, a process was put inplace to track presenting symptoms through the ERand confirmed H1N1 cases to monitor for trends thatwould indicate an outbreak in a specific community. Our Commitment to Excellence5

quality & patient safetyDespite our achievements, HCA North Florida recognizes the importance of patient safety and continuesto make it paramount. Our initiatives ensure the safety and quality of care given to our patients every day.Electronic Health Record (EHR)With EHR, access to patient health information issimplified and patient safety and quality improved. Our hospitals have brought numerous clinicalcomponents for the EHR on-line through majorinvestments in technology. We have implemented theGE Centricity ® Perinatal Documentation System in ourLabor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) units toenhance workflow.Picture Archiving &Communications System (PACS)Picture Archiving and Communications System, more commonly known as PACS, enables imagessuch as X-rays and other scans including CT, MRIand PET to be stored electronically and viewedon screens so that doctors and other healthprofessionals can access the information and compareit with previous images at the touch of a button. PACSallows our hospitals to function completely filmlessand operationally more efficient by supporting cliniciansin performing their roles.6 HCA North Florida

Voice RecognitionTo improve report turnaround time and patientcare, our hospitals and imaging centers use VoiceRecognition, which allows Radiologists to reporttheir interpretation of a study directly from thePACS imaging system by speaking instead ofdictating. The physician then reviews the report onscreen, makes any adjustments, signs the reportand it posts immediately for others to view. Reportturnaround time has been greatly reduced to anaverage of just over 30 minutes.Nation’s First Infant Screening ProgramHCA was the first U.S. healthcare system tovoluntarily perform a simple blood test to screennewborns for elevated levels of bilirubin thattriggers jaundice. By identifying newborns at riskfor Kernicterus, which causes permanent braindamage and physical impairment, we can treat themimmediately and prevent this serious health threat.Methicillin-ResistantStaphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)Staph infections are a growing health issue. Our facilities have implemented a number ofproactive initiatives, including expanding ourtesting procedures for MRSA beyond screeningonly high-risk patients and taking precautions toassure the spread of the infection is prevented.Electronic MedicationAdministration Record (eMAR)and Barcoding SystemAn innovative tool, eMAR and Barcoding Systemsare a part of our efforts to continue medicationadministration safety. The system uses barcodetechnology for each medication and records, stores, and retrieves patients’ information through patientarmbands. The system gives our nurses and staff a“safety net” to assure that patients are receiving theright medication at the right time with the right doseand right route. Our Commitment to Excellence7
