STUDENT BRIEFSummaryNow – first semester Level 2 – is a good point in yourcourse to begin to identify and focus on <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong>graphic design that interest you <strong>the</strong> most in terms <strong>of</strong>your longer term career goals. To do this, you need tobegin to evaluate your own strengths and personalattributes as a designer and relate <strong>the</strong>m to identifiablecareer paths and industry demands.This exploration and knowledge allows you to identifyyour own developmental needs and steer <strong>the</strong>remainder <strong>of</strong> your programme <strong>of</strong> study so that you arebest prepared for life as a design pr<strong>of</strong>essional. Fromnow on, you are expected to take increasingresponsibility for methods and <strong>the</strong> media you work in;both during option modules in <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> Level2 and in <strong>the</strong> Level 3 self-directed study. STUDENT BRIEFThis module enables students to broaden <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir area <strong>of</strong> practice inrelation to <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional context; how it operates and where employment or o<strong>the</strong>r commercialopportunities exist. Delivery is focused upon <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> research skills and <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong>information through specific activities such as presentations and case studies. The module is designed tocontribute <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> students’ contextual understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir discipline, deliveredthroughout <strong>the</strong> programme, and to focus this towards identifying personal career aspirations and <strong>the</strong>opportunities <strong>of</strong>fered, directly and indirectly, by <strong>the</strong> industry.During <strong>the</strong> module, students are encouraged to begin to articulate <strong>the</strong>ir own interests within <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong>disciplines encompassed by <strong>the</strong>ir subject and link <strong>the</strong>se to <strong>the</strong> skills and attributes required by specificpr<strong>of</strong>essional roles. This is intended to support students in identifying <strong>the</strong>ir own personal direction andallowing <strong>the</strong>m to make an informed use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> choices open to <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>programme through links to long-term career goals.GDP for Level 2 is embedded in this module.Students are first asked to identify broad areas <strong>of</strong> interest within <strong>the</strong> subject through <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> abrief “manifesto” that positions <strong>the</strong>ir interests and aspirations and communicates <strong>the</strong>m to o<strong>the</strong>rs. Thisinformation forms <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> setting small groups <strong>of</strong> like-minded individuals who collaborate ingenerating <strong>the</strong> research and development <strong>of</strong> an illustrated case study. Each group makes a presentation to<strong>the</strong>ir peers about <strong>the</strong>ir findings at an interim stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> module.Following <strong>the</strong> group presentation, <strong>the</strong> students work as individuals to develop methods <strong>of</strong> promoting<strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong>ir target employer/s. This includes <strong>the</strong> design and development <strong>of</strong> a CV, letter <strong>of</strong>introduction/personal statement and <strong>the</strong> design and planning <strong>of</strong> a personal on-line presence that couldhouse an online portfolio in <strong>the</strong> future. This is presented for assessment along with an evaluativestatement, which identifies personal strengths and weaknesses in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject and proposesfuture goals/strategies.Teaching and learning methods:Lectures and seminars underpin <strong>the</strong> learning process by delivering factual information and setting outissues to be considered. These <strong>of</strong>fer examples and critiques <strong>of</strong> existing practice.Visiting speakers are also invited to demonstrate examples <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional working practice.Support for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> methods for effective research is delivered through workshops involving<strong>the</strong> UWE Library, for example. Students are also supported in <strong>the</strong> research and development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> casestudy by guidelines that define a set <strong>of</strong> questions concerning <strong>the</strong> philosophy, creative and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalmethodologies, and ‘target market’ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir example. The set questions encourage students to use a range<strong>of</strong> research methods to ga<strong>the</strong>r key information; this includes <strong>the</strong> requirement to engage in primaryresearch through contact and interview with practitioners as well as secondary research methods. Thisactivity is monitored and supported through group tutorials where <strong>the</strong> sharing <strong>of</strong> information isencouraged.Workshops and lectures supporting pr<strong>of</strong>essional development and practical presentation skills are alsodelivered throughout and are supported by <strong>the</strong> UWE Careers Development Unit.
